police lineup?

When the police present a lineup for a victim to pick out the suspect, where do they get the other guys from? Do they have an extras bullpen? Do they just go out on the street and grab the first guys the find? Do they use other officers not in uniform? Do they use wannabe actors? Can one be put on the "extras" list?

Anyone have any insight into how the police do this?

"Live" line-ups using real people (like you see in the movies) have gone the way of the Dodo. Police today use photo line-ups, putting six pictures on one piece of paper and having the witness sign their name below the one they think is the suspect. The photos used come from the booking photos (of all people ever arrested) that are stored in the jurisdiction's computer database.
