I've been meaning to make this post for awhile now. Here's a few to get the thread started.

Winning Low Limit Hold 'EM by Lee Jones - Awesome book for beginners especially. I'd definatly check this one out before I read any others.

Play Poker Like the Pros - Phil Hellmuth, Jr. - I know a lot of people hate this guy but the book is chalk full of solid advice. Say what you will about Phil, he's proven he knows what he's talking about, I believe nine times over now (gold bracelets). On top of hold 'em he also breaks down the basics and strategies for Omaha, Omaha hi-lo 8's or better, Seven Card Stud, Razz, etc..

Super System - Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson A.K.A. The Bible. I don't know what i can say about this book that hasn't already been said. It's out of print now, if you can find a copy grab it! Your best bet is to check your local libraries and check it out, and then you tell them you "lost" the book and just pay them the retail price. Or you can shell out some more cash and find it online at the auction sites, used books, etc... ***NOTE*** I believe a new Brunson book is due to hit the shelves next month. This is sure to sellout fast so pre-ordering is a great idea.

Feel free to add any books that may have helped you out too. THe more the merrier.

I'll post some more of my favorites later tonight or tomorrow. Off to watch the rest of the So. Miss game at the bar.

Hold 'em Poker For Advanced Players
by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth

Only for people who have been playing the game a while. Don't expect to absorb everything in the first reading. This is definitely a multiple-read book but it's worth it to pick up the subtle points.

Excellent choice BGO. All of the other Sklansky and Malmuth books are definately worth picking up too.

Caro's Book of Poker Tells might be helpfull for some people.

Poker Wisdom of a Champion by Doyle Brunson comes out in November. Can't wait to read that one.

EXCELLENT TOPIC ACE!!!

People think they are "Joe Poker" now ever since the WSOP and WPT have been televised on ESPN. What the "common person" doesn't realize, is that poker is not only luck, but skill as well. 5-4 offsuit is NOT gonna win you the WSOP EVERYTIME, just as it did Chris Moneymaker. (Ironic name, huh?) This kid DID have a LOT of luck, but from what the commentators were saying, his skill levels were above the "average" level of the "average" poker player.
Knowledge IS indeed power. The more you read and understand WHAT you are reading, the bigger advantage you give yourself at the poker table.
I would also like to add for those that are not to savvy on reading, there are a few good VHS videos out there by Mike Cairo and Dave Sklansky as well.
Mike Cairo explains his techniques thoroughly, and very well. He diagrams things on a chalkboard. If you were a good student in school, you should fare EXTREMELY WELL with his tapes.
I would also like to add ANOTHER book that you should add to your collection. This book is written by John L. Liner Sr., who I DO happen to know very well. He gave me one of the first copies of his first publishings to help promote his book over 10 or so years ago.
The book is called, "Winning Texas Hold 'Em Simplified." It's a small soft covered book. It covers not only hold 'em poker, but other general subjects such as poker etiquette, tipping the dealers, and playing poker in casinos vs. home games.
I strongly suggest this book to first timers or novice players because it's not TOO intense or overwhelming with information.
I hope this helps.

Y'all have a Blessed Day!!!

I still think Sklansky's "The Theory of Poker" is one of the best books ever written. Definitely not for a beginner with Sklansky's dense prose and written for a knowledgeable player.

Sklansky's "Holdem Poker", which I believe was the first book written on the topic, is worth a read for a beginner. If you don't know the stuff in here you shouldn't be playing.

Ace,

1) low limit hold 'em is very good

2) If you follow the limit hold 'em advice in play poker like the pros you will go broke VERY FAST... some of the worst hold 'em advice in print.

3) do not follow the limit hold 'em advice in Super System either. It was written for the old 1 blind structure and the mathematics of the game have changed.

I own nearly 20 poker books, the best:
1) Theory of Poker
2) Low Limit Hold 'em
3) for advanced player either Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Player by Sklansky or even better
Middle Limit Hold 'em by Jim Brier and Bob Ciaffone - these are epic books.

Improve your Poker by Bob Ciaffone is another rock solid book if you have experience.

For tournaments that are now so popular, Tournament poker for advanced players is awesome by Sklansky...

All Sklansky books are heavy math and odds books - math dummies beware...
