I just started playing at Party Poker with play chips, just for kicks. I've played in card rooms and make money about half the time. With play chips, I come out ahead almost every time and can wn 30-40 percent of the sit & goes I enter. I'm wondering how that relates to playing with real money at Party Poker. Can anyone tell me how much better the players are when real money is on the line? I really don't have a grasp of how good a player I am yet, and don't want to get sucked in to thinking I'm better than I am.

There is only one way to find out. Start playing the lower limit games/sitngo's. If you win at the lower levels, keep moving up until the competition gets too tough to beat and then drop back down and contine to win at the lower level.

The biggest mistake some people make is trying to beat the bigger limit games before they are ready.

I started out playing NL 25. Then moved to NL 50, 100 and now play NL 200 and NL 400. Most players i know start out at NL 200 or NL 400 and eventually go bust because they are playing over their heads. its not a question of whether you can afford the higher stakes, its a question of whether you can beat the higher stakes.

Hope i helped.

good luck

As you might imagine the differance between real and play money play is like it is with any other game....night and day.
However the fact that you have learned the strategy involved probably says you have a good enough grasp on the game to try some real money games and see how it carries over.....just keep in mind that where as now you may have 1 or 2 serious competitors at a table you will probably have 7 or 8 at a real money game. Good Luck

Thanks, guys. Pro, that's what I thought would happen, and that's why I never played in casinos until recently. I've know how to play for years, but I never played in casinos because I figured most of the players were better than me. But now with the influx of people who THINK they can play, there are thousands of people who aren't as good as me. Therefore, I started hitting the card rooms and realized I could win simply by staying away from the talented players. It's like my ranking as a poker player rose simply because so many bad players came in underneath me.

Prime, you make it sound like horse racing and moving up the claiming ranks. That makes sense. I can win at 4/8 tables in Reno and Vegas. Where would that put me in the online poker world? The same?

I've won over $1M in fake money at Pacific Poker in a very short amount of time. But when I've tried the penny tables I would win a little, then lose it all. I see a difference, at least in this site. There seems to be a sweet seat (or two) that lasts for 24 hrs (from 7am pst) on the fake money side, which makes it easy to win if one can find it...but the money side is just playing the odds like a poker maching. Just my opinion from what I've observed...

Online poker and live poker are different animals. The game and style are different and the speed of play and number of hands dealt per hour is far greater online.

I can't tell you how it transaltes, but i would start out lower than you play live to start. If you can win ata 4-8 live then try to start at 1-2. There is no real rush. If things work out well at the 1-2 level there is nothing stopping you from moving up quickly.
