please clue me in you guys, what's the difference between a flat plasma and an lcd screen, i know lcd is the way to go in terms of computers (no radiation and all) so why isn't it better than the plasma one, and, moreover, i got a really big non plasma, non flat screen, why would i want to switch to a plasma one?!?!?!?!?

LCD is more expensive than plasma and the picture is not as good. An LCD tv will last 2x as long as a plasma and uses 1/2 the power. A plasma screen can experience image burn-in if the same picture is left on for over 15 minutes (like on a computer)

The plasma is if you want the bigger screen but don't have the room for a regular tube or projection. The plasma also allows better viewing from the side.

You can get an ED (enhanced definition) 42" Plasma for ~$2300 right now, which is the same price as a 30" LCD.

A regular tv is at 480 lines of resolution, the ED is at 840, and the HD is 1080. For the money, if you want a plasma, you can't beat he ED's.

Wait until next summer to buy one. The price will have gone down about 30% and the technology will be better.

thanks for the reply bryan.

one more question. lcd is liquid crystal technology, normal tube screens we all know what they are made of, what exactly is the technology behind the plasma screen, and what makes it so good it's so expensive in terms of picture quality.

thanks.

happy new year.

Lots of good info here:

http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/learningcenter/home/tv_flatpanel.html

plasma TV is sometimes called an "emissive" display — the panel is actually self-lighting. The display consists of two transparent glass panels with a thin layer of pixels sandwiched in between. Each pixel is composed of three gas-filled cells or sub-pixels (one each for red, green and blue). A grid of tiny electrodes applies an electric current to the individual cells, causing the gas (a mix of neon and xenon) in the cells to ionize. This ionized gas (plasma) emits high-frequency UV rays, which stimulate the cells' phosphors, causing them to glow the desired color.
