I've been around a long time. Watched the replay of the Music City Miracle about 100 times and that was a forward pass all 100 times from about six different angles. It happens. But I would make the argument that the ones that were truly "lucky" were the SD+ bettors. Pittsburgh should have covered, miracles do happen, and the NFL has admitted the call was in error. The first lateral was not forward and not dropped. Enough said.

Personally, I think it was a fix gone bad and now they've got all this unwanted attention on them. I'm not gonna bother writing the whole story up, just watch ESPN. Somehow, this may be the tip of the iceberg to something real big. Human corruption is real people! If you don't believe game are fixed, then you also don't believe in politician taking bribes or insider trading on Wall St.

you're a moron. the referee and the league have already admitted the touchdown shouldn't have been taken off the board.

Even espn.com is talking about it and mentioning spread

We didn't kill it on the field," Green said. "After [the] discussion we decided ... there was some confusion over which pass we were talking about and it was decided that it was the second pass that was illegal that did hit the ground and therefore we killed the play there."

However, the officials realized afterward they erred.

"I know," Green said. "The rule was misinterpreted."

Asked about the officiating -- the Steelers drew 115 yards in penalties to the Chargers' 5 -- Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin declined to comment.

"No, I have never seen a game ended with 13-to-1 in penalties [the official tally was 13 against the Steelers, two against the Chargers], but I am not answering questions about the officiating," Tomlin said.

The call affected betting on the game since the Steelers were either a 4½- or 5-point favorite and would have covered if the touchdown counted.

"It was weird," Steelers receiver Hines Ward said, " ... but this game is about wins and losses, and we won."

i'm not going to read and sort thru this thread but my question is this. i have watched the replay numerous times and since there was no forward pass the ball is still live...am i correct on this??? so since a touchdown was scored and never interfered with the outcome of the outright winner or loser why did they even review it?

They are discussing this in depth on the show 1st and 10 on espn. They all agree it was bogus but all say the nfl cant acknowledge the elephant in the room aka vegas betting. they even said they heard over 100 million was lost over this game. Even skip bayless said he hopes the nfl comes out and says something but cant acknowledge the spread. This is alot bigger then just us bitching about it. Alot of people are mentioning this all over the media. They even mentioned words like fix.

Big Ben had a big bet on the Chargers +4.5, thats why he was confused & horrified by what happened, I know I woud have been, Jake Delhomme had the same look last week on his face when the Raiders missed the 58 yard field goal to cover.
I doubt he expected that field goal to be any good.

GO ahead and believe that. 300 yards passing and no TD's. Did he even throw a decent ball into the endzone? Run Mewelde Moore on 4th down with Willie Parker on the sidelines? This is worse than WWE wrestling sometimes.
Big Ben could have just sneaked it in from the 1 instead of handing it off 4 yards in the backfield. Obvious they did'nt want to score.

Didnt get to watch the game, had no $$ on it but after seeing the replay, reading the comments before the official NFL answer "we fucked up ... again" one has to wonder.

To many things that happend which stand out ...

- Did anyone see a flag thrown ?
- Big Ben's initial reaction to the TD. Can't believe that someone watching their team score a TD in a big game like this, isnt smilling or cheering. The look on his face is priceless.
- Doesnt the video re-play have to be "100 clear cut" to overturn a call ? Guess not .. but liked they said "we fucked up ..sorry"
-Heard that this game had the most action of any NFL game this weekend. Does make one wonder ?
- Penalty's .... Can someone say a little one sided ?

This was the worst loss for me in the 40 year history of me betting football.
Not from an amount lost but just a "bad beat". Before this it was a Monday night game where Seattle had to intercept a pass and run it back for a touchdown in order to cover when they had the game won. They did but the kicker missed the extra point so they didn't. That was depression to elation to depression in 60 seconds. Last night was the same but it was accepting defeat to elation to anger. Numbnut zebras. I think they are just incompetent and stupid rather than cheaters or fixers. That crew should be banned from the NFL.

Unless the refs are really, really good at coming up with a bailout excuse-I'm willing to write this off as a bad call.

There were 2 passes-and some confusion about which one they were talking about. After reading what the ref had to say after the game, I think that the conspiracies are nothing more than that-conspiracies.

They blew it-just like they did in the Denver-SD game earlier in the year. At least this one didn't decide the winner of the game.

They are going to have the nfl's top ref on the 6pm sportscenter.

They apparently might change the rules

http://www.postgazette.com/pg/08322/928658-100.stm

NFL Vice President of Officiating Mike Pereira said today that league officials are taking steps to convene the Competition Committee in a special meeting so they can modify rules interpretations and avoid a recurrence of the bizarre touchdown-or-no situation that concluded the Steelers' historic victory over San Diego in Heinz Field Sunday.

Pereira admitted that referee Scott Green and his crew misinterpreted the rules and incorrectly disallowed a Troy Polamalu fumble return for a touchdown that would have given the Steelers a 17-10 triumph rather than an 11-10 score that was the first in the league's 12,000-some game history.

"It's safe to say it's already in the process of being reviewed," Pereira said today "If we let the replay guy say, 'Hey, wait a minute, they're talking about the wrong pass ..., then we can correct an egregious mistake like that. I think that's something the Rules Committee [i.e. Competition Committee] has to look at, and look at soon, how we administer the replay. This is just one instance. Could we put it on the wrong 45-yard line? Could we put it on the wrong hash? Could we put it at the wrong clock time?"

Sorry, but not going to let this topic die regarding whether the Pitt-SD game was fixed. Continuing to look at more details in the aftermath. A few more bird bits for fodder:

-Pitt is averaging under 6 penalties per game this year. The 13 penalties for 115 yards was the most in 6 years for the Steelers.

-Regarding the 13 Pitt penalties vs 1 for SD- Mike Pereira, VP of NFL officials, stated in an interview after the game that he he was told " it was the 51st time in NFL history there was such a large discrepancy in penalties". So of the 10's of thousands of NFL games played over the years this game was one of 51 w/such a discrepancy. Consider this when you review the circus that was the last minute of that game.

Someone please advise again why the refs reviewed the last play of the game since the game was essentially over and Pitt had won SU.
