I heard on Espn Sunday magazine on ESPN radio early this AM a talk show host say ..and I quote

" If Phil is doing it bet legally either in vegas or OFFSHORE there is nothing wrong with it as he is NOT on a team"

2 questions I have about this ESPN says OFFSHORE is legal which there is still no cut and dry law on it AND is it right for michelson to bet on himself since he is not effecting a "TEAM"..

thoughts please

thank you

Many golfers bet on themselves(or others) when they play in the British Open and it is widely known and accepted.

I see no problem in this case either, as offshore sportsbetting has not been proven to be illegal from a federal standpoint in the United States.

i have serious doubt that mickelson has money offshore and bets on himself.

the guys is pulling down 20 mil a year and has " the life " . why would he risk that and his good name and popularity for that.

granted , he bet with a group of guys on a super bowl future . so now he is this big time gambler..

give me a break..

if the guy was pulling down 150 or 200 grand a year then i could see something like that..

but 20 mil, whats the point getting involved.

hey i'm sure the guy spends his fair share of time in vegas , but to mess with offshore is pointless for him..

it was living his life , i would be the squiky clean..

No golfer should bet on a tournament in which he competes. Regardless of whether or he cheats or not, it just reeks of impropriety.

The majority do so at the British Open.

I'm sure that it happens more than we know. I just don't like it. Obviously,if they are betting on themselves or betting once they are no longer competing then it is a bit better but I do not like players betting ON ANY EVENT IN WHICH THEY CAN AFFECT THE OUTCOME.

Pete Rose betting on games his team didn't play in..fine. Phil betting on a tourney in which he did not compete..fine. Anything else stinks.

Phil used a big portion of his Callaway bonus to clear up some past dues in Vegas. He likes the tables a lot. As far as offshore goes, if a guy bets $40,000 on a futures bet he's damn sure betting more than nickels on the NFL fromt week to week.

Phil owed a book on top of this page a nice chunk of change that he was stiffing on. Don't know if he ever cleared it up, but it was pretty widely known about his debt, and the fact he wasn't paying.

Like most golfers pros bet on themselves. The real betting goes on during the parctice rounds. I heard Nicklaus was a $5 nassau man. Others over the years have been known to bet on anything during practice rounds going all the way back to Walter Hagen. Woods if he isn't already there is sure to be a billionaire and most likely is not that much of a gambler. Phil makes tons of money is and it's all his so if wants to roll dice I say so what. Not paying a book in another matter though.

MAX....I HAVE HEARD FROM A VERY GOOD SOURCE THAT ALL OF PHIL'S CALLOWAY BONUS WENT TO UN PAID GAMBLING DEBT...THIS IS NOT UNCOMMON WITH SPORT CELEBRITY'S....MICHEAL JORDON WOULD GET STUCK WITH SOME BIG NUMBERS AT THE LOCAL RIVERBOATS IN ILL. AND INDIANA AND NEVER PAY WHAT HE OWED, IN MANY CASES LESS THAN 1/2.....:sad3:
