Panic disorder? How can that be with all of that pot?

But in all seriousness, I don't have any info for you first hand about Paxil. I had a cousin who took it but I thought it was for depression.

Harry,

I took Paxil for depression/anxiety about 7-8 years ago for close to a year. The two complaints I had with the med is it messed up by my sex drive and made me like a zombie. I switched off all SSRI's due these two issues and now deal with life and pop a zanax now and then- If you have any other questions, let me know and GL

It is used as an anti-depressant as well. From my understanding SSRI's can be prescribed for depression, anxiety disorders (including panic disorder), and even OCD.

Were there any other side effects? I am most worried about insomnia and nausea. :pucking:

Also, they say to "drink alcohol with caution." WTF does that mean? Is it physically extremely bad for me? Or does it just make you more fucked up when you drink? I am only 25 years old, I would like to still be able to go out with my friends from time to time and have a few drinks...
I asked the pharmacist how much was too much, and he said "well I would only have a beer or two at a time." Fuck that! I'm not allowed to get drunk anymore? :smoking:

Harry-

I did get some insomnia at first and the 1st couple days I felt completely out of it. After your body gets adjusted to the drug, you will feel fine.

I was around 22 when I was on the drug and was drinking 4-5 times a week. I don't think I was ever told anything regarding alcohol or I probably didn't listen if so. Every drug effects everyone different obviously so I would test the waters a little bit and take it from there.

be very careful with these SRI drugs! A percentage of people who take them have extremely negative side effects. I wouldnt take these drugs until you get a second opinion on your so called anxiety disorder.

Alot of times your body is just getting rid of built up stress that has been accumulationg over several years.

What side effects are you currently experiencing that would make the doctor think you have this?

BTW if you doctor is just a GP (general practioner) get another opinion for someone who specialises in this.

I knew what I had all along, and have been suffering from it for years. I was diagnosed by a very well-respected psychiatrist. I have panic attacks for no reason. My life is actually very stress-free (aside from the attacks).

This is what I suffer from, no question in my mind at all...

Panic Disorder
"It started 10 years ago, when I had just graduated from college and started a new job. I was sitting in a business seminar in a hotel and this thing came out of the blue. I felt like I was dying.

"For me, a panic attack is almost a violent experience. I feel disconnected from reality. I feel like I'm losing control in a very extreme way. My heart pounds really hard, I feel like I can't get my breath, and there's an overwhelming feeling that things are crashing in on me.

"In between attacks there is this dread and anxiety that it's going to happen again. I'm afraid to go back to places where I've had an attack. Unless I get help, there soon won't be anyplace where I can go and feel safe from panic."

People with panic disorder have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. They can't predict when an attack will occur, and many develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike.

If you are having a panic attack, most likely your heart will pound and you may feel sweaty, weak, faint, or dizzy. Your hands may tingle or feel numb, and you might feel flushed or chilled. You may have nausea, chest pain or smothering sensations, a sense of unreality, or fear of impending doom or loss of control. You may genuinely believe you're having a heart attack or losing your mind, or on the verge of death.

Panic attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep. An attack generally peaks within 10 minutes, but some symptoms may last much longer.

Panic disorder affects about 6 million adult Americans1 and is twice as common in women as in men.2 It most often begins during late adolescence or early adulthood.2 Risk of developing panic disorder appears to be inherited.3 Not everyone who experiences panic attacks will develop panic disorder—for example, many people have one attack but never have another. For those who do have panic disorder, though, it's important to seek treatment. Untreated, the disorder can become very disabling.

Many people with panic disorder visit the hospital emergency room repeatedly or see a number of doctors before they obtain a correct diagnosis. Some people with panic disorder may go for years without learning that they have a real, treatable illness.

Panic disorder is often accompanied by other serious conditions such as depression, drug abuse, or alcoholism4,5 and may lead to a pattern of avoidance of places or situations where panic attacks have occurred. For example, if a panic attack strikes while you're riding in an elevator, you may develop a fear of elevators. If you start avoiding them, that could affect your choice of a job or apartment and greatly restrict other parts of your life.

Some people's lives become so restricted that they avoid normal, everyday activities such as grocery shopping or driving. In some cases they become housebound. Or, they may be able to confront a feared situation only if accompanied by a spouse or other trusted person.

Basically, these people avoid any situation in which they would feel helpless if a panic attack were to occur. When people's lives become so restricted, as happens in about one-third of people with panic disorder,2 the condition is called agoraphobia. Early treatment of panic disorder can often prevent agoraphobia.

Panic disorder is one of the most treatable of the anxiety disorders, responding in most cases to medications or carefully targeted psychotherapy.

This is a very treatable problem that you used to have, I'm sure if you would consider this but Hypnosis is a very good natural treatment. I can try to find you a list of reputable Hypnotherapists local to you, if you want to go this route.

I have heard that alcohol tolerance goes to shit with these anti-depressants. Five beers can get you legless drunk.

Panic disorder is related to anxiety and you would be much better of with Xanax.

I took Paxil for about a year for anxiety and stress. It worked great and really did the trick for me, but I could not handle the side effects. It totally made my sex drive go away. Its crazy almost like you forget sex exists. There was also some nausea, but I found out that I could take 1/2 at night and 1/2 in the morning and that would elliminate that problem.

Since then I have swapped around and tried a few different meds for anxiety. I found that effexor was pretty good. I currently take Lexapro and its what I've been with the longest so I guess it works pretty well also.

Let's get down to brass tacks. How much for the ap

I had a friend trying to quit taking paxil and she would have crazy reactions. She described it like electricity shooting thru her brain. My wife was taking xanax for panic attacks and they worked great. Xanax is also a great hangover cure probably the best.
