Seattle Seahawks -3
GAME: Seattle Seahawks (6-2) at Washington Redskins (3-5).

TIME: Sunday, 1 p.m. EST.

Like most of the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks are surprised with their strong start. The only difference is that the Seahawks are more concerned with the two losses.

"I thought we'd be 8-0," guard Steve Hutchinson said. "We lost two games, but I've got to hand it to the teams that beat us. They played hard for 60 minutes. We didn't make plays when we needed to."

The Seahawks look to keep winning and improve their fortunes on the road as they face the struggling Washington Redskins at FedEx Field.

The Seahawks beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 23-16 last Sunday for their third win in four games.

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck completed 18 of 31 passes for 215 yards and one touchdown for the Seahawks, who were 2-6 at this point last season.

"It's only halfway," Seattle coach Mike Holmgren said. "To make the first half of the season good for us, the second half of the season has to be good, as well."

Darrell Jackson scored on a 14-yard catch in the fourth quarter, and helped set up another touchdown later on a 43-yard reception for Seattle, which needed a touchdown in the final minutes to beat the struggling Chicago Bears on Oct. 19.

The Seahawks have been involved in tight fourth quarters in five of their last six games.

"We're not blowing people out," guard Steve Hutchinson said. "We can't just show up and expect to win. We've got to learn to play four full quarters."

Seattle is on pace to win a team record-tying 12 games this season and is off to its best start since 1999, the last year the Seahawks last reached the postseason.

The defense ranks sixth in the NFC with 311.6 yards allowed per game, while Hasselbeck has thrown for 1,774 yards, completing 59 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.

However, the Seahawks know they have plenty to work on - including their 1-2 record away from Seattle.

"We need to keep our intensity and our focus on the road," receiver Bobby Engram said. "When you're on the road, you only need one or two mistakes to get the home crowd riled up. We need to learn to control that situation."

Seattle, which lost 27-24 at Cincinnati the week before the Pittsburgh game, plays five of its last eight games on the road.

The Redskins are coming in off last Sunday's 21-14 loss to the surprising Dallas Cowboys - their fourth straight defeat since a 3-1 start.

"It hurts even worse every time it happens," said receiver Rod Gardner.

Quarterback Patrick Ramsey threw for 147 yards on 16-of-30 passing but was sacked four times and had to leave the game twice with injuries to his non-throwing hand.

The offense managed just 11 yards in the first quarter, including minus-11 yard passing, as the Cowboys' defense kept constant pressure on Ramsey. Teams have been using more and more blitzes against coach Steve Spurrier's pass-happy Fun 'n' Gun offense.

"We're struggling a bit right now," Washington coach Steve Spurrier said. "Sure we have to make some adjustments here and there. Early in the year, we were moving the ball a lot better. Certainly the hits on the quarterback are something we have to be concerned with. But there's a lot of pressure when they're just rushing four guys, too."

Adding to the Redskins' problems, defensive end Bruce Smith has expressed displeasure after being used as a reserve for the first time in 17 years.

"Absolutely - I want to know what their intentions are," Smith said. "I have goals that I'd like to achieve for myself, team goals and individual goals. At some point and time in your career, you have to take a stand and be a little selfish."

Smith, who is two sacks shy of Reggie White's all time record of 198, has just 1½ this season. Regan Upshaw started in his place against Dallas.

The Redskins placed guard Dave Fiore, who was signed to a four-year, $6.5 million free agent deal during the offseason, on injured reserve Tuesday with an injured knee.

They also signed former Tennessee running back John Simon to help replace their three injured backs. Trung Canidate, the team's leading rusher, has missed the last two games with a severe ankle sprain, Ladell Betts is out with a broken arm, and Chad Morton and Sultan McCullough were both injured against Dallas.

Miami Dolphins +5½
GAME: Miami Dolphins (5-3) at Tennessee Titans (6-2).

TIME: Sunday, 1 p.m. EST.

Following a bye week, the Tennessee Titans look to begin a strong second half with their fourth straight win when they return home to face the Miami Dolphins.

The Titans have a favorable schedule remaining, with five of their last eight games at The Coliseum, where they are 27-8 since 1999. Tennessee's three remaining road games are against teams with a combined 6-18 record - Atlanta, the New York Jets and Houston.

"Right now we're in a great position," defensive end Jevon Kearse said. "We're in the kind of position that's maybe kind of tricky."

Tennessee is rolling after tying a franchise record with its fifth straight 30-point performance, a 30-17 win at Jacksonville on Oct. 26. The Titans can break the mark set in 1961, when they were the Houston Oilers of the AFL.

Kearse anchors the top rushing defense in the NFL at 75.4 yards per game, which has played a big part in Tennessee allowing only 17 points in each of three games since a 38-30 loss to New England on Oct. 5.

Kearse is also third in the AFC with 7½ sacks.

"We can't look at it like we're 6-2. ... We've got to look at it as if the season's just starting over again, and we're trying to be undefeated," he said.

The Titans will continue to look to Steve McNair, who is third in the AFC with 1,978 passing yards and has thrown for 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. He has the third-best passer rating in the NFL at 105.1 - his highest ever at this point in a season.

The running game is ranked only 26th with 90.6 yards per game behind Eddie George and Robert Holcombe, but has come on of late with 133.5 yards over the last two contests.

"We're just the tip of the iceberg right now," McNair said of the offense. "We've got to continue to improve week in and week out."

The last time the Titans were 6-2, they went on to win their only AFC title before losing to St. Louis in Super Bowl XXXIV. After winning 10 of their last 11 last season and returning to the AFC championship game, the team knows what it's capable of.

"We put our minds to it, we can make it happen," safety Lance Schulters said. "We go on a run like last year, we can win these eight games easily if we handle our business.

"Five of eight at home? I'll take our chances."

The Dolphins head to Nashville with a 4-0 road record, but gained no momentum last weekend with Sunday's 23-17 home loss to Indianapolis.

Miami nearly rallied from a 23-14 deficit in the final four minutes after Terrell Buckley intercepted Peyton Manning with 2:45 left. But Brian Griese lost a fumble when he was sacked for the fifth time in the game and the Colts held on for the win.

The loss was the Dolphins' second straight at home and dropped them to 5-3, the same record they had at midseason last year, when they missed the playoffs.

"Maybe we should cancel the rest of our home games," defensive end Jason Taylor said. "We're sitting in the middle of the pack, or maybe the back of the pack. That's not the situation you want to be in."

Griese had 231 yards and one touchdown in his second start in place of the injured Jay Fiedler, and will make his first career start against the Titans with Fiedler still experiencing soreness in his sprained left knee.

Fiedler injured a ligament against New England on Oct. 19 and was designated the No. 3 quarterback against Indianapolis - but the Dolphins hope he will be able to back up Griese on Sunday.

"The goal now is to at least put him in a position to be the second," Miami coach Dave Wannstedt said.

Miami needs a big game from Ricky Williams, who ran for only 36 yards last week in his worst outing since January 2002. Williams has been held to 62.6 yards the last five games after averaging 115.7 in the first three, and could have a hard time breaking out against a Titans squad that hasn't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 24 straight home games.

STANDINGS: Dolphins - 2nd place, AFC East. Titans - 2nd place, AFC South.

DOLPHINS LEADERS: Offense - Fiedler, 1,115 passing yards and 6 passing TDs; Williams, 660 rushing yards and 5 rushing TDs; Chris Chambers, 31 receptions, 461 receiving yards and 6 receiving TDs. Defense - Adewale Ogunleye, 9 sacks; Patrick Surtain, 6 interceptions.

TITANS LEADERS: Offense - McNair, 1,978 passing yards and 13 passing TDs; George, 443 rushing yards; George and McNair, 3 rushing TDs; Derrick Mason, 44 receptions, 592 receiving yards and 4 receiving TDs. Defense - Kearse, 7.5 sacks; Rocky Boiman and Andre Dyson, 2 interceptions.

DOLPHINS TEAM RANK: Rushing Offense - 111.1 yards per game (15th in NFL); Passing Offense - 181.1 ypg (24th); Total Offense - 292.2 ypg (24th). Rushing Defense - 79.0 ypg (2nd); Passing Defense - 235.8 ypg (27th); Total Defense - 314.8 ypg (15th).

TITANS TEAM RANK: Rushing Offense - 90.6 yards per game (26th); Passing Offense - 255.3 ypg (4th); Total Offense - 345.9 ypg (8th). Rushing Defense - 75.4 ypg (1st); Passing Defense - 252.5 ypg (31st); Total Defense - 327.9 ypg (22nd).

LAST MEETING: Sept. 9, 2001; Dolphins, 31-23. At Nashville, Tenn., Fiedler passed for two TDs to lead the Dolphins to their 10th straight opening-day victory.

STREAKS AND NOTES: Dolphins - Miami looks to start the season 5-0 on the road for the first time since 1984. ... DE Ogunleye has seven sacks in the past four games. ... Since the 2000 season, the Dolphins are 16-3 when producing a 100-yard rusher. Titans - The win over Jacksonville improved the Titans to 28-0 when RB George gets at least 27 carries. ... Tennessee is 8-6 following bye weeks ... The team leads the AFC in time of possession at 33:13.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Dolphins - 4-0 on the road; Titans - 3-0 at home.

INJURIES: Dolphins - OUT: T Mark Dixon (ankle). QUESTIONABLE: DT Larry Chester (hamstring/quadricep); QB Fiedler (knee); RB Rob Konrad (shoulder/knee); CB Surtain (ankle); LB Zach Thomas (groin). PROBABLE: DT Tim Bowens (neck); LB Tommy Hendricks (neck); RB Travis Minor (shoulder); WR Derrius Thompson (groin); RB Williams (leg). Titans - OUT: WR Drew Bennett (calf); CB Andre Woolfolk (ankle). QUESTIONABLE: RB Chris Brown (hamstring); S Donnie Nickey (foot); G Benji Olson (hamstring); CB Samari Rolle (elbow).

Indianapolis Colts -6½
GAME: Indianapolis Colts (7-1) at Jacksonville Jaguars (1-7).

TIME: Sunday, 1 p.m. EST.

The Indianapolis Colts offense has received much of the credit for the team's hot start, while the contributions of players like defensive end Dwight Freeney have gone largely unnoticed.

After Freeney's performance last week, no one will be taking him or the Colts defense lightly as they head to Jacksonville for an AFC South matchup with the Jaguars.

The trio of Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison once again powered the Colts' prolific offense - but it was Freeney who dominated the Dolphins in a 23-17 win last week.

The 23-year-old Freeney had three sacks and two forced fumbles, including one on a game-saving sack of Brian Griese with two minutes left that stopped a Dolphins' comeback bid after Manning threw a crucial interception.

Working against Dolphins rookie tackle Wade Smith, Freeney also helped the Colts limit Ricky Williams to 36 yards rushing, allowing Indianapolis to control the ball for nearly 38 minutes.

"The biggest problem we had was with Freeney," Miami coach Dave Wannstedt said. "That was probably the most dominant defensive performance we've seen in a long time. We couldn't handle him."

Freeney has seven sacks and three forced fumbles this season to follow up an impressive rookie campaign in which he had 40 tackles, 13 sacks and nine forced fumbles.

If teams continue to try and block him one-on-one, Freeney could soon be chasing Reggie White's NFL record of 31 sacks in his first two seasons.

After totaling six sacks in the last three games, Freeney is in the top five in the AFC in sacks and has a shot at becoming the Colts' first defensive Pro Bowler since linebacker Duane Bickett in 1987.

"It's why the organization brought him in here, for the constant speed off the end rush," Manning said. "Anytime you have a guy like that, he can be a real difference maker in the ballgame."

Manning was 23-for-37 for 266 yards and one touchdown, and James ran 26 times for 89 yards as the Colts improved to 7-1, matching their best start since 1977. Only Kansas City (8-0) has a better record.

"It's a great achievement," Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "One thing I like about this team is that we can win a lot of ways."

The Jaguars lost 24-17 to Baltimore on Sunday for their third straight defeat.

Jacksonville held NFL leading rusher Jamal Lewis in check and limited the Ravens to nine first downs, but played poorly in the fourth quarter.

The Jaguars outgained the Ravens 320-259 and held Lewis to 68 yards on 21 carries, but Byron Leftwich threw two key interceptions in the fourth, including one in the final minute from the Baltimore 29-yard line.

Leftwich went 22-for-34 for 208 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown to David Allen with 3:11 to go. Leftwich, the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, has 1,313 passing yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions this season.

"He's just got to grow," Jaguars receiver Jimmy Smith said. "He's human, but in my mind he's doing well. It's best for him to be out there in the heat of the game."

STANDINGS: Colts - 1st place, AFC South. Jaguars - 4th place, AFC South.

COLTS LEADERS: Offense - Manning, 2,128 passing yards and 16 passing TDs; James, 456 rushing yards; James, Ricky Williams and James Mungro, 2 rushing TDs; Harrison, 55 receptions, 747 receiving yards and 6 receiving TDs. Defense - Freeney, 7 sacks; Nicholas Harper, 3 interceptions.

JAGUARS LEADERS: Offense - Leftwich, 1,313 passing yards and 7 passing TDs; Fred Taylor, 583 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs and 38 receptions; Smith, 334 receiving yards; Troy Edwards, Matt Hatchette and George Wrighster, 2 receiving TDs. Defense - Tony Brackens, 4 sacks; Jason Craft, 2 interceptions.

COLTS TEAM RANK: Rushing Offense - 94.3 yards per game (24th in NFL); Passing Offense - 260.8 ypg (3rd); Total Offense - 355.1 ypg (5th). Rushing Defense - 120.5 ypg (21st); Passing Defense - 186.0 ypg (8th); Total Defense - 306.5 ypg (11th).

JAGUARS TEAM RANK: Rushing Offense - 100.0 yards per game (20th); Passing Offense - 225.9 ypg (7th); Total Offense - 325.9 ypg (14th). Rushing Defense - 93.0 ypg (7th); Passing Defense - 207.0 ypg (17th); Total Defense - 300.0 ypg (9th).

LAST MEETING: Sept. 21; Colts, 23-13. At Indianapolis, Reggie Wayne had a career game with 10 catches for 141 yards and two TDs - nearly all in the second half - to power the Colts to the win.

STREAKS AND NOTES: Colts - WR Harrison had six catches for 60 yards against the Dolphins, ending his streak of four straight games with at least 100 yards receiving. ... RB James has 5,369 rushing yards and needs 119 to pass Lydell Mitchell for the most in franchise history. ... QB Manning is 4-0 against the Jaguars with 1,013 passing yards, 10 TDs and one interception. Jaguars - QB Leftwich has a TD - passing or rushing - in seven straight games and can become the third QB since 1970 with a TD in each of his first eight career games. ... The Jaguars have held WR Harrison to 14 catches for 93 yards over the past three meetings. ... RB Taylor ran for a season-high 126 yards in the last meeting.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Colts - 4-0 on the road; Jaguars - 1-3 at home.

INJURIES: Colts - OUT: S Idrees Bashir (shoulder); LB Jim Nelson (collarbone); WR Brad Pyatt (back). DOUBTFUL: DT Montae Reagor (chest). Minnesota Vikings -6½
GAME: Minnesota Vikings (6-2) at San Diego Chargers (1-7).

TIME: Sunday, 4:05 p.m. EST.

After playing an extra game on the road because of the California wildfires, the San Diego Chargers finally return home to face the Minnesota Vikings.

It has been an emotional two weeks for the Chargers, who were forced to move their Oct. 27 Monday night contest against Miami from Qualcomm Stadium to Tempe, Ariz., because of the huge fires. San Diego, which lost that contest 26-10, also had to practice in Illinois last week before their 20-7 road defeat to the Bears on Sunday.

The lone bright spot in Sunday's defeat was the play of backup quarterback Doug Flutie. However, all that has done is cause a controversy at the position.

Flutie replaced struggling Drew Brees in the fourth quarter and pulled the Chargers to within striking distance. He was 8-of-11 for 70 yards and rushed for 19 yards on two carries, including a 17-yard scramble for San Diego's longest run of the game.

Flutie is no stranger to quarterback controversies, as he had a much-publicized battle with Rob Johnson in Buffalo. The possibility of Flutie's elevation was spiced up when defensive end Marcellus Wiley spoke out after Sunday's loss and said it was about time the Chargers went with Flutie, 41.

"As far as I'm concerned, right now (Brees is) the starting quarterback of this team and I'm a role player," said Flutie, who's gotten along well with Brees in their 2½ seasons together. "I don't expect anything. Marty (Schottenheimer) said he will make a decision later in the week. I think that's primarily to keep Minnesota guessing."

Brees, 9-15 in his season and a half seasons as a starter, said he hopes he can hang onto his job, although Schottenheimer said it could be as late as Friday before he announces his decision.

Brees has thrown five interceptions and no touchdown passes in the last three games. For the season, he has 12 interceptions and seven TDs. He completed 7-of-15 passes for just 49 yards with one interception Sunday.

Brees had three interceptions and a fumble that led to a safety in the loss to Miami.

Whoever starts at quarterback could benefit from a struggling Vikings defense that has allowed 450 yards each of the past two weeks.

After jumping out to a 6-0 start, the Vikings have dropped their last two games to the Giants and Packers, mostly because of bad defense.

Minnesota is ranked 29th in the NFL in defense, and is giving up an average of 356 yards per game. The Vikings allowed 261 yards rushing to the Packers in Sunday night's 30-27 loss, and fell to 20th in the league in run defense.

"I think the situation (stinks), frankly," coach Mike Tice said. "You can't win a lot of games in the NFL doing that."

San Diego hopes to exploit the porous running defense with LaDainian Tomlinson, second in the AFC with 780 yards rushing.

Minnesota will try to get its own running game going. The Vikings got back Michael Bennett last week after he missed the first seven games with a broken foot, and he had eight carries for 43 yards. Bennett rushed for 1,296 yards in 2002.

STANDINGS: Vikings - 1st place, NFC North. Chargers - 4th place, AFC West.

VIKINGS LEADERS: Offense - Daunte Culpepper, 1,234 passing yards and 11 passing TDs; Moe Williams, 571 rushing yards; Williams and Culpepper, 3 rushing TDs; Randy Moss, 52 receptions, 878 receiving yards and 9 receiving TDs. Defense - Lance Johnstone, 5½ sacks; Corey Chavous, 7 interceptions.

CHARGERS LEADERS: Offense - Brees, 1,450 passing yards and 7 passing TDs; Tomlinson, 780 rushing yards, 5 rushing TDs and 47 receptions; David Boston, 413 receiving yards; Eric Parker, 3 receiving TDs. Defense - Adrian Dingle and Dequincy Scott, 4½ sacks; six with 1 interception.

VIKINGS TEAM RANK: Rushing Offense - 135.6 yards per game (6th in NFL); Passing Offense - 230.1 ypg (6th); Total Offense - 365.7 ypg (tied for 3rd). Rushing Defense - 118.8 ypg (20th); Passing Defense - 237.3 ypg (28th); Total Defense - 356.1 ypg (29th).

CHARGERS TEAM RANK: Rushing Offense - 127.5 yards per game (10th); Passing Offense - 177.3 ypg (25th); Total Offense - 304.8 ypg (21st). Rushing Defense - 128.8 ypg (25th); Passing Defense - 219.6 ypg (24th); Total Defense - 348.4 ypg (28th).

LAST MEETING: Nov. 28, 1999; Vikings, 35-27; At Minneapolis, Jeff George threw for 363 yards and four TDs to beat the Chargers, who got 404 passing yards from Jim Harbaugh.

STREAKS AND NOTES: Vikings - DE Johnstone has 5½ sacks in his last six games. ... RB Onterrio Smith ranks second among NFC rookies with 217 rushing yards. ... Minnesota is 11-0 when Moss has 150 or more receiving yards. Chargers - This is the first meeting between the teams in San Diego since 1991. ... Tomlinson is one of three RBs to lead his club in receptions. ... Either DE Dingle or DE Scott can become the sixth different defensive lineman to lead the club in sacks in the past six seasons.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Vikings - 3-0 on the road; Chargers - 0-3 at home.

INJURIES: Vikings - QUESTIONABLE: T Bryant McKinnie (ankle); LB Raonall Smith (hamstring). Chargers - OUT: WR Eric Parker (shoulder). QUESTIONABLE: TE Stephen Alexander (groin); C Jason Ball (ankle); T Solomon Page (ankle); DT Jamal Williams (calf). PROBABLE: WR Reche Caldwell (concussion); S Vernon Fox (groin).

Sadly I needed to bump this up to refresh my memory (and everyone elses) about how bad I ended up the season last year...

Calculated the total at 23-33 -13.3 units assuming I stuck to -110 throughout (of which I will keep better track this year)

I stopped posting so much after this thread because at the time I had bought a house, had a baby and had a mother die within a period of about 2 months...

Anyway starting over this year with a new perspective (and yet another baby due around christmas!)

I just remembered another thing regarding the -110 comment...

A lot of those losses were -120 or even -170 on those teasers...

-13 units would have been a gift.

anway - new perspective ->
