The Dallas Cowboys are riding the wave of a 7-3 record and first place in the NFL's NFC East division so far.
Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers are showing signs that they may finally be putting some of the pieces together after a slow start. And at 5-5, they're good enough for second place in the NFC North division.
Despite the tale of two seasons for the hated rivals, the Packers and Cowboys are tied for first in the annual Harris Poll of the nation's favorite professional football teams, released today. Both teams received 12 percent of the vote.
In previous years, the top teams garnered as much as 25 percent of the vote. Last season, for example, the Packers led the way with 17 percent.
Steve Wilkinson, the owner of Fatso's Sports Garden, said a few days before the poll results were announced that he believed Dallas and Green Bay share the NFL stage as most popular teams.
"I guess you can call the Cowboys the America's Team of the South and the Packers the America's Team of the North," said Wilkinson.
Rounding out the top 10 on the most recent Harris Poll are the San Francisco 49ers (10 percent), Washington Redskins (9 percent), Minnesota Vikings (9 percent), Chicago Bears (8 percent), Miami Dolphins (8 percent), Pittsburgh Steelers (7 percent), St. Louis Rams (7 percent) and the New York Giants (7 percent).
Miami and Pittsburgh were the only AFC teams to break into the top 10 in fan popularity, while NFC teams took up the remaining eight slots.
Only 5 percent of the fans polled selected the Houston Texans as their favorite NFL team. That's better than the 2 percent the Texans received last season, their first in the NFL.
Bringing up the rear was the Arizona Cardinals. Only 1 percent of the fans polled ranked the Redbirds as their favorite NFL team.
