Dont concern yourself with the over/under stats as much, zo has a very small strike zone, definitely look for over when it sets itself up with him behind the dish,

example a ump could have 20 unders and 10 overs but get alot of good pitching matchups which lend it self to and under, marquez huge over lean

sports database.com. You will need to know to understand how to query for it. Look around for examples as that will help and is the only way to learn is by trial and error.

Good pitchers go over too. The starters set the line, then its up to us to consider O/U. Opening Day Shields/Kershaw. Final 6-3.

Starters rarely pitch the entire game, so despite good pitching match ups, they aren't the only one that pitch during a game. Most games the bullpen will pitch at least 1/3 of the game, something many people dismiss. That 19 inning game between Bos/NYY last week, the entire bullpens were used. I don't care who was pitching the next day or who the umpire was, the next day was an Over play.

If an umpire has a 2/1 Under ratio, I'm not going to assume its because he had a lot of good pitching match ups. I'm assuming he has a loose zone.

I would rather concern myself with actual stats, results are results. You're making a subjective opinion on his zone, which isn't backed up by the stats. If that works for you, then fine. But based on the pure numbers, you really need to pick your spots because more often than not his games go under.

Since 2004, Alfonso Marquez is 143-133 (51.6%) to the Under. Looking at different totals, he is 19-9 Under when its 7 or lower. 72-61 Over when its 7.5-8.5, 62-52 Under when its 9 or more.

Based on these stats, I have no idea how you can say he's one of the biggest Over umps in all of baseball.

Umpires, referees are human. They all have their different subjective biases. Maybe Marquez has a bigger zone for the best pitchers, based on his record for sub 7 totals. I don't know for sure. Ken Mauer has an incredible record for the road favorite in non-div games in the NBA. Why is that? Do road favorites just play better at the sight of Ken Mauer? Or does he give road favs the benefit of the doubt when he calls their games? I don't know. Some refs won't, he does. Its subjective. What I do know is that the results speak loudly. Road Favs in non-div games cover. A lot. They are 67-26 since 2007/8. Never had a losing year, and was a ridiculous 18-4 this year. After that he is 9-3, 7-4, 5-1, 10-5, 9-4, 5-4, 4-1. Am I to believe that every year, by coincidence, he gets road favorites that would have covered regardless of who the ref was? I don't know, nor do I care. I just know that in this situation, over the past 8 years, he has never had a losing record in this situation and it wins at a 72% clip.

Psychology plays a bigger role than people want to admit. That goes for calls made in the NBA, and balls/strikes in baseball. Its up to us to consider how much relevance we give it.

When I look at umpires, I would rather go by the statistics and find an edge. If I have an umpire with a large lean towards O/U, whether its overall or a certain subset, I'll side with the numbers rather than my subjective analysis of his strike zone. Others may do it differently and it works for them. More than one way to handicap a game.

1000 ways to skin a cat, i like to watch the games replays to see the strike zones of each ump i try to watch atleast 20 replays a year on each ump, thats why strike % is more important to me, goodluck

Watching replays ever year of games he is behind the dish, his strike % has stayed the same also, also his strike zone hot chart has stayed within the same... ***** Umpire trends can at times be random – favorable/unfavorable pitching matchups, weather, stadiums, etc******** I dont just look at how many unders and overs they have there are too many variables to base and ump on such basic info

The bottom line is results.

You called Marquez an extreme overs umpire, yet the results say otherwise. I'm still wondering how you came to that conclusion.

I'm glad you cashed.

But quoting strike zone percentages doesn't make an umpire an extreme overs umpire. Especially when he's below 50% on a sample size approaching 300 games.
