Besides sports tickets.

Only bought tickets on Ebay before....never bothered to sell anything, but a friend of a friend sells tons of shit on there he says and make s a lot of money doing it. Just curious as to what used or old stuff is demanding so much money.

there's a lot of profit in counterfeit, altered, misrepresented, etc. coins and other collectables. Ebay is full of them.

ebay is a "buyers" market from what I hear, it takes a real good product to make a profit.

Here's a scam seller. The item is genuine, but carefully misrepresented. This seller bought a coin that was what is termed a "problem" coin, and paid about $200 for it ( a fair price), it was downgraded by a legit company that authenticates, grades, and encapsulates coins.

This reseller "cracked" it out of the "slab", and very carefully represents it as likely being worth over $1,000 ( without quite saying it). You'd have to know what stuff to buy ( I do) to pull this off. I wouldn't do it,though.

same item in both listings, here :

The M.O. is the same:

Buy ANACS net slabs:

Ebay is like a giant garage sale..Five years ago you could sell about anything in it and make a profit..Now you really need to have something very rare. The other alternative is to introduce something brand new on the market in Ebay, and sell as much as you can before other sellers start to catch wind...This is the main problem with the sight..There's now simply too much worldwide competetion. Have you tried other sights? I've sold stuff in Craig's List..And it's free to list your items in there as opposed to Ebay's outrageous fees..

I've known some people that will buy stuff that is heavily discounted ( like 90% off) at retail stores, and resell it on ebay.

Some buy stuff on ebay that is listed poorly... wrong category, poor/no photos, bad descriptions, etc., then list it better.

Some even buy stuff cheap at yard sales, and sell it on ebay. stolen stuff could work too, if not too traceable/unique.

Ebay has become so big, I think Craigslist is a better option.

If your "buddies buddy" is really making good money selling, I'd hit him up for some tips, because everyone & their mother is trying to get rich selling crap on Ebay. If I had to guess, I'd say that about .01% of them really are.

I've sold a ton of stuff in Ebay in the last 7 or 8 years..I grew up around a bunch of musicians and music nuts, and I know about everything there is to know about finding rare records, cd's and some memorablilia at super cheap prices and selling them for big bucks in Ebay..A couple year ago I bought a couple rare classic rock cd's in a guitar shop for $5 a piece and sold one for $200 and the other for $150 in Ebay..Needless to say this kind of find and sell gives you a high. And I used to do it all the time..I used to be alone out there doing this. But now there are thousands of people doing it in my region...Plus with the downloadable music you can now get on the internet, people are no longer as interested in cd's and records. Although there still is a small demand for it as long as it's very rare or collectable.
I've also sold alot of bootleg rock concerts in Ebay..I made a killing out of this a few years ago..Problem is Ebay is cracking down more on bootlegers. I've already been kicked off of the site a couple times for selling..But I still do it occansionaly..The good part is I built up a bootleg clientele of my own over the years and I don't need Ebay as much as I used to to sell my music.
My recomendation if your just starting out wanting to sell something in Ebay..Don't try to sell a bunch of different things. Find a specefic product or two that you're halfway interested in..Find out as much about it as you possibly can. Go into the Ebay archives and look at the selling history of that product..You can find out very quick what parts of that product are very rare and what isn't by the selling price of the item..The Ebay archives is one of the best, if not THE best place for info on selling and finding out how to price things...You can still have success in Ebay..But you have to be very dedicated. And plan on spending some time and working just a little harder than the next guy to be successful...Good luck

Solid advice.

I'm actually late to the eBay game since I only started my business a few months ago.

1 - Don't quit your day job. The days of making a killing are slowly dying out. Treat it as supplemental income, but still as a serious business, and you'll be fine.

2 - Read the advice above. Find a product/hobby you like and then find products that those people need. That's what I've done and it works out well. When you know the product and its fun to you, it comes across in your listings and in answering people's questions so it helps you sell more. Plus, starting with one product can lead to others. In my case, a manufacturer noticed my business and asked me to carry their products and I think that I will, so that will grow my business too.

3 - Think about fulfillment! I sell a product that can be easily shipped in a 8"x11" envelope and I use standard US mail. If you sell something that's a pain to ship (ie you have to wait for the FedEx guy) or can break or requires you to have all sorts of packing material, your business will soon become nothing but a pain-in-the-ass to you. Find something that you can handle mailing

Good luck!

Most ebay related businesses are pyramid schemes.

Ask you friend for some advice and he'll say something like

"All you need to do is sign up on this website for 39.85 and they'll tell you how to make a ton of money and even give you products to sell (exclamation point.)"

Thats BS. There are schemes on eBay, just like on any other site, but there's also PLENTY of people making decent coin on there. I'm not making a killing, but more than enough to make my car payment nut each month WITHOUT running a scheme.
