£30k bet on Scots for Six Nations Feb 13 2004
Kevin Schofield
An optimistic punter stands to win more than £2.5 million if Scotland win rugby's Six Nations Championship, it emerged today.
The unnamed Frenchman has laid out a total of £30,000 on the Scots over the past week.
And if Matt Williams' men - who kick off their Six Nations challenge against Wales in Cardiff tomorrow - upset the odds and scoop the title, he will walk off with a staggering £2.66 million.
The mystery man, who comes from Paris, put on the massive wager at Ladbroke's store in the centre of London.
A spokesman for the company said they were amazed by the size of the wager.
Ladbroke spokesman Balthazar Fabricius said: "The Auld Alliance between Scotland and France looks to be alive and kicking.
"It is one of the highest wagers we've ever seen on the Six Nations and is a staggering vote of confidence.
"We'll certainly be following Scotland's progress with interest now."
Little is known about the mystery punter, although it is believed he works in the City alongside several Scots.
An insider said he has fallen in love with Scotland and in particular Edinburgh and the national rugby team.
Scotland were 100/1 to win the Six Nations a week ago when the punter walked into the store and put on an initial bet of £5,000 in cash.
A few days later he put on a further £15,000, forcing Ladbrokes to drop the odds to 80/1.
And yesterday he decided to put on another £10,000, driving the odds down further to 66/1.
With more Scots also backing their side as the big kick-off approaches, the odds on a Scottish triumph now stand at 40/1.
World Cup winners England are 4/7 odds-on favourites to win the Six Nations, with France close behind them on 6/4.
Ireland stand at 20/1 to scoop the title, Wales are 25/1, while Italy are the rank outsiders at 1,000/1.
The odds on Scotland completing the Grand Slam by winning all five of their matches are 250/1, while they are at 125/1 to lift the Triple Crown by beating the rest of the home nations.
Mr Fabricius added: "We have noticed an explosion in rugby betting following England's heroics in the World Cup.
"And hopefully Scottish fans can get in on the act too."

I'm shocked at the generous 200-1
offered by CanBet.
