One of the greatest military victories of all time

Search
W A S H I N G T O N, April 6 — Pfc. Jessica Lynch is rescued in a daring midnight raid in Nasiriyah. In Najaf, U.S. forces are greeted by jubilant crowds in a scene one battalion commander compared with "the liberation of Paris." Outside Baghdad, Army and Marine divisions have punched through Iraqi Republican Guards and are preparing to take the capital.

In just a few days, talk of Vietnam II and hounding Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld out of town has given way to images of success and generals predicting one of the greatest military victories of all time. To analysts, this whipsaw effect is part of the rhythm of 21st century warfare, when shrinking news cycles of 24/7 coverage create their own storyline and shape perceptions of how the war is actually progressing.

greatest military victory?

Making every US citizen fearful that they may no longer be able to travel the world as freely as before.

Who FEELS safer?

Fat Frank:

USA over Grenada was the best.

Lasted a few hours.

Maybe next month, US can pick a fight with lets say Costa Rica, afterall, CR has no military so it should last under an hour.

Why don't you understand these people will attack Americans anyway. If Europe becomes such a hell hole that Americans can't travel there without armed guards those countries will sure miss the tourism money more than American will miss Europe. Let's hope they get their house in order for the ones that like to travel Europe. Most I know can't wait to kiss American ground after spending a week in Europe. I prefer to spend my money in Maui anyday.

Why is it that you think this?

Most I know can't wait to kiss American ground after spending a week in Europe.

What people do YOU know?

Patriot I finally agree with you 100% "your exactley right people who live in the US should travel and explore our own country first." I would add to this and say exclusivly. You guys already know you live in the greatest country in the world, what could you possibly gain by leaving your country.

Just a little stipulative point here.

There's no doubt in my mind that the US will win this war, as in "beat the opponent in combat." There's no doubt in my mind we'd win against Iran, Syria, Korea, Russia, China, or the combined forces of the EU nations if it came down to it. But let's not kid each other: GREAT VICTORIES?

A "great victory" implies an opponent capable of offering substantial resistance. I could be the "world's greatest street fighter" if I only took on schoolchildren and the handicapped. But the moment some guy the size of an NFL linebacker rolls up on a Harley with a baseball bat in one hand and a chain in the other, the odds would take a dramatic turn for the worse. If by some miracle I survived the fight, let alone won it, THAT would be a "great victory" on my part.

When the hell did our amazing military get transformed into the f*cking Special Olympics, where everyone gets a medal for showing up? Will some future war with Vanuatu be dubbed "Operation Everyone's Special in His Own Way" and get gripping 24/7 coverage on all stations for the whole seventeen minutes of battle?

"Greatest victory ever." What a Laff Riot you can be, Frank.

hey Phaedrus why mention Vanuatu as who amongst the war supporters here would have any idea where it was or what sort of fight it could mount.

otherwise agree with you absolutely. was it montezuma who led 160 odd spaniards to thrash 80,000 aztecs ( after arranging meeting for "peace" discussions and then pulling one of the greatest double crosses of all time ). then guns, swords and horses made the fight a mismatch as the aztecs had no defence just as the iraqis lack one now.

Well, I figured that readers who actually read anything I post would fall into one of the following categories:

1) People who understand the silliness of the image of USMC Amphibious Special Forces units rolling up and wiping out the locals, and calling it "one of the greatest victories since Iraq."

2) People who care enough to go look up words and names with which they are unfamiliar.

3) The club of dipsh*ts who make up everybody else in this forum.

Without resorting to calling names there are plenty of class (3) on both sides of the war, those who think it tastes great and those who find it less filling alike. The reference is largely intended for class (1) and (2) individuals.

not montezuma but Pizarro. the author said 168 spaniards routed 80,000 aztecs in a few minutes. very dubious but how does your great military victory compare to that one FF??

Someone who believes this is a great military
victory,probably would describe the
Sacramento Kings rout of a junior high school
basketball team as an outstanding effort.

Good point Fat Frank. This might be the most successful war in history so far.
