As promised, back with my analysis and selections for the remaining two games for today.
Rose Bowl: Michigan vs USC
This game matches the two powerhouses for each conference and once again matches the Big 10 and the Pac 10. Michigan brings a very solid team to the game with strength both offensively and defensively. The Wolverines feature QB John Navarre who averages 59% completions with a 23-9 TD to interception ratio and 255 yards per game and only 15 sacks. They also feature RB Chris Perry who had 1589 yards on 5.0 yards per carry and 42 receptions for 8.7 yards per catch and 19 touchdowns. The receiving corp included WR Braylon Edwards with 75 receptions and 13.7 yards per catch and 14 touchdowns. The defense after giving up 424 yards rushing to Minnesota allowed only 71 yards per game and a 2.7 yards per carry average. The secondary allowed 52.4% completions with a 5-14 TD to interception ratio and 167 yards per game. Michigan's weakness is in special teams as opponents blocked 4 kicks and the kick coverages allowed 20.3 yards per kick-off return and 13.2 yards per punt return with 3 TD's. The punting average was a net 31.3 yards and the placekicker was 9-11 with a decent leg. The positive was in returns with a punt return average of 14.1 yards and 2 TD's. The kick-off returns averaged 20.7 yards per return.
USC brings an explosive team to the game with strength and speed both offensively and defensively. The Trojans feature QB Matt Leinart who averages 63% completions with a 35-9 TD to interception ratio and 3,229 yards and an efficiency rating of 163.2 with only 14 sacks. The running game features a 3 back rotation consisting of LenDale White who had 728 yards and 5.5 yards per carry, Hershel Davis had 644 yards and 5.0 yards per carry, and Reggie Bush had 480 yards and 5.9 yards per carry. The receiving corp featured WR Mike Williams with 87 receptions and a 14.1 yards per catch average and 16 touchdowns and Keary Colbert with 63 receptions and a 13.7 yards per catch average. The defense allowed only 1.9 yards per carry and registered 46 sacks on the year. The secondary yielded 277 yards per game with a 55% completions and a 17-21 TD to interception ratio. The Trojans led the nation in turnover ratio with +20. The special teams were excellent with a net punting average of 43.5 yards and the place kicking was a successful 19-23. Punt returns averaged 9.0 yards and kick-off returns 27.9 yards. The return units allowed 21.1 per kick-off return and 8.1 yards per punt return.
Motivation for this game is extremely high for the Trojans as coach Carroll has his team firmly in a state of mind of us against the world following the BCS debacle and the team is playing all out for a split in the national title. Michigan comes in playing the road of the spoiler. The game is being played in the beautiful Pasedena environment where the Rose Bowl has always been revered by Southern California teams. Expect huge support for the Trojans in this game. The coaching in this game cannot be understated. The combination of Norm Chow's offensive schemes and Pete Carroll defensive plan have turned this program into a monster. The overall team speed of the Trojans both offensively and defensively is impressive and they can strike an opponent from all angles and create terror in the eyes of an opponent. This program is operating at an incredibly high level with full focus, and with full respect to a very good Michigan team, the Wolverines have seen nothing that is comparable or prepares them for the Trojans. Expect USC to dominate this game in all aspects, not letting up either offensively or defensively. The fundamentals of this game are very solid. This is my strongest game of the bowl season but use caution and disciplined money management. This game warrants a rare 5* play from me, but when I make a decision on the level of play I ask myself what will satisfy me. With the very nice bowl season we have had too date, I am choosing to make this only a 3* play. I support going higher and I may bump later on today, but do not, and I repeat do not load up on this game. Anything is possible in sports and I have lost strong plays in the past, so play wisely and enjoy watching a very talented team. Hence,
5* USC -6.5
Orange Bowl: Florida State vs Miami, Florida
This game matches Florida State playing out of the ACC with Miami, Florida coming out of the Big East. The two teams feature balanced offenses and defenses and met earlier in the year with Miami prevailing on the road 22-14 in a heavy rain soaked game that didn't allow either team to perform at it's best. These two coaches and programs know each other well and have put on some excellent battles through the years and expect nothing less tonight. Feeling here is that Florida State played the tougher opponents in both the ACC as well as non conference games. Miami struggled at times, both in conference as well as out of conference. Motivation will be high for both teams, but feeling here is that the Seminoles want this game a little more. With QB Rix, they have a more experienced player than his counterpart Berlin. Miami is coming off two seasons of national title hopes and is not at the level of previous years teams as of yet. Hence,
3* Florida State -2
Good Luck All. Happy New Year to everyone. Enjoy the games.
