Ohio gambling regulators on Monday instructed the state's licensed sportsbooks to halt betting on college baseball games involving Alabama after suspicious wagering activity was detected on the Crimson Tide's game against top-ranked LSU on Friday.
The directive, issued by Ohio Casino Control Commission executive director Matthew T. Schuler and obtained by ESPN, prohibits "the acceptance of any wagers on University of Alabama baseball effective immediately."
Schuler wrote that the emergency order was in response to a report from an independent integrity monitor. On Friday, U.S. Integrity, a Las Vegas-based firm that monitors the betting markets, issued an alert to its sportsbook clients regarding "suspicious wagering activity" involving the Alabama-LSU game.
Because there is no national gaming regulator, a halt on wagering typically happens on a state-by-state basis.
Sportsbook FanDuel has removed Alabama baseball games from its betting menu in all jurisdictions as a precautionary measure.
Jessica Franks, director of communications for the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC), said the suspicious wagering activity took place at the BetMGM sportsbook that's located at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. Franks declined to provide additional details about the suspicious wagering but said that the specificity of information the OCCC received from one of its certified, independent integrity monitors was "enough to prohibit all wagers on Alabama baseball."
LSU led Alabama 8-1 after seven innings and held off a late rally by the Crimson Tide for an 8-6 victory on Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Tigers were around -245 favorites over the Crimson Tide in the game in question.
Alabama plays Vanderbilt on Thursday.

What was suspicious? The score? Or someone betting?

College baseball is nuts. Great power teams lose to nobody schools on the regular. And any conference game is almost a coin flip. They left out important details on why they suspended the action

The coach fixed games? Is he also going to be banned from coaching?

ha, a bama coach doesn't need to fix losses. they're always one of the worst teams in the SEC because of having fewer scholarships available than the most of the conference. this was one of their first decent seasons that had them on track to make the tourney but even as a decent season they are still <.500 in conference

the game being highlighted had a late scratch on the Bama starter and there were large wagers (both parlays and straight) taken on LSU at odds that moved a lot once the new Bama starter was posted, and LSU won the game. The bets hit at the great price on LSU favored before the odds moved which made LSU a massive favorite. The new starter Banks is normally a reliever and was told 45 minutes before the game that he was replacing Holman who pulled a muscle in his back in warmups. BetMGM inside the Reds park (while they were on a road trip) got hit hard at the same time so sounds like some inside info maybe Bohannon provided to some buddies (or big bettors) about the LSU pitching change.

Bohannon makes 500k/yr so if he's tipping off buddies about pitching changes to get some bets down that's just fn stupidity

guessing something like this:

Bohannon calls or text buddies in OH a couple hours before game that his starter has a sore back and will likely be scratched so get to the bookie and I'll confirm once he throws a bit in warmups. then makes the call that he's pulling Holman and putting in a shitty reliever who a great LSU team will fn destroy so get the bet in now as he's heading down to tell Banks to get warmed up. His boys got down at like -200 and after the pitching move and bets hit the line jumped to -400

Alabama fires baseball coach Brad Bohannon amid betting probe.

Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon was fired Thursday, five days after suspicious wagering was detected on the Crimson Tide's game at LSU.
The school announced that athletic director Greg Byrne has "initiated the termination process" for Bohannon for "among other things, violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees."
Jason Jackson will serve as Alabama's interim coach, according to the school, which said it will not provide further comment due to an "ongoing review."
The alleged suspicious activity took place last Friday at the sportsbook at The Great American Ballpark, according to the Ohio Casino Control Commission.
The OCCC's investigation is centered on two bets on the Tigers to win from the same unidentified customer, multiple industry sources told ESPN. It was not known as of Thursday afternoon whether any potential connection existed between Bohannon and the bets in question.
The OCCC was alerted to the alleged activity last Friday by independent Las Vegas-based integrity firm U.S. Integrity, which works with the OCCC and the SEC to monitor the betting market. U.S. Integrity alerted to its clients last Friday, and the OCCC halted betting on college baseball games involving Alabama. The SEC has contracted with U.S. Integrity since 2018 and has used the firm to monitor all conference events, including baseball.
A spokesperson for the NCAA said Thursday that the NCAA takes betting on sports "very seriously" but declined further comment on the situation at Alabama because of the ongoing investigations.
"The NCAA takes sports wagering very seriously and is committed to the protection of student-athlete well-being and the integrity of competition," the spokesperson said. "We will work with our partners to protect student-athletes and the sports they play. The association is monitoring the situation.
Due to confidentiality rules put in place by NCAA member schools, the NCAA does not comment on current, pending or potential investigations."
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said Wednesday that the conference also is investigating the situation.
"We are aware of reports related to the suspension of wagering Alabama baseball games," Sankey said. "We will continue to monitor available information and any regulatory activity.
"As many states have acted to legalize sports gambling, we are reminded of the threats gambling may pose on competitive integrity. Together with our member universities, we will continue to emphasize the importance of regulating, overseeing and providing education related to sports gambling activity."
Pennsylvania on Thursday became the third state to order sportsbooks to halt betting on Alabama baseball, joining Ohio and New Jersey as investigations continued. A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board said the ban on betting on Alabama baseball was put in place "as a matter of precaution" and will last until "further notice."
Ronnie Johns, executive director of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, described one of the bets as "large" to NOLA.com and added that he didn't suspect anything suspicious regarding LSU.
"The problem," Johns told NOLA.com, "would have been whether someone on the Alabama side was suspicious of activity."
Bohannon, who had been the Crimson Tide's coach since June 2017, had a 166-124 record with one NCAA tournament appearance, in 2021. Twenty Alabama players were selected in the MLB draft during his tenure. The Crimson Tide are 30-15 this season and are slated to begin a home series against No. 5 Vanderbilt on Thursday night.
Regular-season college baseball does not typically attract significant betting interest or large wagers. FanDuel said it didn't take a single bet on the game, and other sportsbooks also reported minimal betting on the game.

why do they have fewer scholarships available?
state lotteries fund a lot of college baseball scholarships. AL keeps getting state lottery voted down so Bama can only hand out the maximum amount which i think is 12 full scholarships across 35 players so most are on either no scholarship or a partial, very few are full ride. The only 4 SEC schools that don't have a state lottery or use their lottery to fund more baseball scholarships are Bama, aub, Miss St, and Miss. But both Ole Miss and Miss St are much cheaper schools to attend so really ALA and AUB are the two that aren't able to recruit like the rest of SEC. The other 12 schools can give out up to (i think) 27 scholarships so it's like FBS football team in same conference as FCS

and I think we all know this is unlikely to be a first-time case...bookies don't sound the alarm because they lost once on a sport like college baseball that has tiny limits. And since this was specific to the betMGM in Cincy and betMGM just got licensed last fall that means if Bo did this numerous times they all came in the 2023 season probably with the same guys placing the bets. Guessing they had Bama baseball flagged from a few instances this season and since it was just one bookie (neither fanduel nor draftkings took $1) at one site it made it very easy to track

imagine throwing away a $500k/yr job where you have no pressure to win?

I don’t think that’s going to be an issue going forward with NIL. Probably one of the reasons that they had a good year this season

For a sports gambling website, i'm SHOCKED that this was already on page 2
Has nothing to do with being a big story on a gambling site .
If it’s not about Trump or Lebron vs MJ or people from the picks forum spamming their daily GOY plays this place is dead .
