Normal life in New York City "is a few months away at minimum" Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday, even as city continues to see a decline in coronavirus cases.

“Reopening … obviously is a few months away at a minimum,” the mayor said in response to a caller asking about small businesses and COVID-19 restrictions during an appearance on WNYC radio's “The Brian Lehrer Show.”

De Blasio said his administration is taking steps to bring the city out of the crisis. Parts of that includes the expansion of testing, tracing and isolation. The rate of infections sharply declined from 58 percent on April 11 to 23 percent Friday, the New York Post reported.

As of Friday, the city had recorded 164,505 cases, including 13,000 deaths. De Blasio announced 2,637 new confirmed cases were discovered Thursday, as well as 202 deaths.

"If you open up too soon you could pretty much guarantee a resurgence of the disease,” he said of scientific data.

In addition to testing, de Blasio will establish a series of advisory groups that will meet weekly beginning in May to discuss ways reopen the city. The Fair Recovery Task Force will formulate a recovery effort to rebuild the economy and another will work to address the racial disparity in COVID-19 infections and deaths.

"The goal is not to go back to the status quo, but to spur a recovery that confronts deep inequities, reaches into every neighborhood, and leaves New York stronger than ever," the mayor's office said last week while announcing the task force groups.

On Friday, de Blasio announced plans to open up to 100 miles of streets to provide open space for pedestrians beginning next week. Approximately 4.5 miles inside city parks and 2.7 miles adjacent to the parks will be opened to reduce crowding, he said.

While New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been praised for his response to the crisis, de Blasio's efforts have received mixed results. He was recently criticized for overseeing the break up of a large Jewish funeral in Brooklyn

NYC is it's own animal - Manhattan has 1.6 million people living in a 2 mile by 13 mile stretch - this does not include how many millions come in from NJ, surrounding NY and burrroughs and CT - but the rest of the country does not have to be NYC

Yes I agree.......I use to visit my cousins in Long Island in the summers as a teenager, & we use to drive down to NY City, & I never liked how compact together everyone worked & lived.

Majority of Americans will do whatever is necessary to combat the virus. Lot of right wing whacko think differently. But the majority definitely are willing to do whatever it takes. Republicans want their small businesses open.

It’s good to see you guys protest now after lashing out at the blacks for doing it. How’s it feel?

"Right wings whacko" "Blacks"
Yeah, everyone else is starting racial talk, not you lol Again with the labels. I have always said conservatives should protest more. Make sure you protest about something with substance. You can't be taken serious when you riot and go crazy over every random black person who gets shot regardless of circumstance and demand it is racism no matter what. Even an individual case of a white person killing a black person even when it turns out it was two black people who did it. You wouldn't want the opposite. You would call that criticism hate and racism. BUt Mr Mob never brings up race....it is always the Nazis and he just responds for justice and equality Bwahahah Mob slob

I’m just pointing out how hypocritical those protesting or supporting it are after criticizing black people for doing it last few years. And the whole Kaepernick thing. That too. You all said oppression doesn’t exist lmfaoooooo

Kaepernick protested peacefully though. You had issues with it.
1. He was wrong about everything
2. he protested at his job
3. Once again when you criticize white people it gets framed as being for justice and equality regardless of the truth
You can be okay with him saying what he wants and also correct him.

The NY governor and NYC mayor have been the biggest fk ups since this has started. I would do complete opposite of what they say given their track record.

You wanna see how a figure head has been wrong.... .look at those two dumbasses.
