A new Internet filtering system could see the end of any bored employees gambling at work. Secure Computing Corporation, the experts in protecting the most important networks in the world, has produced the snazzy piece of software called SmartFilter.
Already the US Air Force and a major health care company, Inova, have opted for the new web management tool. The idea is that the new tool ensures the efficient and productive use of the Internet. SmartFilter enables the Air Force and Inova employees to take advantage of the vast resources of the Internet, with content appropriate to their field.

Derrick Boodhoo, network engineer at Inova Health System: 'We selected SmartFilter because it fit seamlessly into our current environment and allowed us the flexibility to customize the control list to meet the needs of the healthcare industry.'

Vince Schiavo, senior vice president of worldwide sales at Secure Computing: 'SmartFilter's superior design has made it the de facto standard for filtering the network. SmartFilter provides the Air Force with a cost-effective tool to ensure safe, productive use of the Internet.'

In other words, they’re fed up with workers going on the Internet at lunch and clogging the system, so they may as well use their lunch break to surf for something relevant. Or go outside and enjoy the weather if they’re not stuck in the middle of an industrial park miles from the nearest blade of grass.

SmartFilter, and tools like it, enables organizations to build and enforce sophisticated Web-usage policies. Users can be denied access to specific Web sites, or coached within their browser session about acceptable user standards. SmartFilter's international Control List continuously categorizes millions of Web sites into content groups, including gambling, pornography and MP3. The Internet is used for anything else? Well, I just hope that these kind of systems can’t be applied on the scale of an country that decides these things are bad.
