Bill Would Move Tax Filing Day from April 15th to Day Before Election Day [WRITE YOUR REPs!]

Congressman Roscoe G. Bartlett (R-6-MD) held a news conference on Thursday, April 10 to discuss the reintroduction of his bill, H.R. 1725, that would change the IRS Tax Filing day from April 15 to the first Monday in November.
“This bill is very simple,” said Congressman Bartlett. “It would move the tax filing day from April 15 to the first Monday in November.”
“The first Monday in November not coincidentally is the day before Election Day,” said Bartlett. “I think it’s just common sense that the price we pay for our government – which is taxes – should be a top priority when Americans go to the polls to select their Members of Congress. With the current April 15 filing deadline, when we fill out our IRS 1040 and other forms and mail them in, sometimes with a check to the federal government – that moment in time is now about as far removed from Election Day as you can get on the calendar. Moving the moment when we see the difference between our salaries and our take home pay close to Election Day may be the most effective way to encourage more Americans to vote. I think that Americans might make different choices if they have the price of government in their minds when they cast their ballots.”
The bill is identical to H.R. 1550 in the 107th Congress. It was introduced with 19 original cosponsors.
