The NHL is keeping a close eye on the spread of SARS in Toronto with the possibility one case could wreak havoc on the playoffs.
Although hockey's governing body refuses to speculate on what is clearly a hypothetical scenario, it is forced to consider possibilities if a hockey player contracts SARS.
"The NHL is monitoring the (SARS) situation actively," NHL spokesman Frank Brown said.
As a preventive measure, Brown said two doctors have been made available to each team to answer questions and provide information about the disease and its spread. One doctor represents the league, the other the players' association.
The NHL is also getting regular SARS updates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga.
The Maple Leafs front office sent a memo about 10 days ago to all employees, encouraging them to wash their hands and asking them to stay alert at all times, especially if anyone around them displays symptoms.
