With the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs set to commence on Wednesday night, we are busting out our first ever NHL version of Trends & Angles this week.

We went back and analyzed all NHL playoff games since the players strike wiped out the 2004-05 season and we have broken down the trends for each individual round of those last six playoff seasons. We kick things off this week by looking at the angles for the first round, with our look at the second round coming in two weeks.

All records posted here are for all first round playoff games only since the 2006 playoffs (following the 2005-06 season).

Play on all first round road teams (135-142, +32.89 units): We have had a long-held belief that home ice means a lot less in the NHL than is does in the other major sports, and the fact that betting all road teams blindly in the first round the last six playoff years had produced a nice profit...
