NFL owners will vote Tuesday to add a 17th game to the regular-season schedule. If the proposal passes as expected, the Raiders could be in line to play an extra home game at Allegiant Stadium this season.
The preseason would be cut from four games to three, with an extra week tacked on to the schedule, according to a person with knowledge of the proposal. The season would start as normal the first week after Labor Day. Everything else — the playoffs and Super Bowl — would be pushed back by one week.

Although nothing is official, the plan is for the extra home games to be divided by conference each year. One year all AFC teams will get an additional game, the next the NFC.

Reducing pre-season by two games would be fine with this plan, but a one-for-one trade is great. The replaceables will start whining, but that is OK too...the NFL knows how to control the workforce. They should follow the same playoff plan too, but I don't think that will happen.

It’s not as easy getting rid of preseason games as people think .
Its huge money .

The NFL forces fans of all 32 teams to pay full price for all preseason games in season ticket packages .

So I can see why they don’t want to eliminate more then one preseason game

hasn’t been like that for years.

for fins tix, let’s say it’s $1,000 for 10 games.

they charge $40 for preseason but will charge $140 for the patriots game

Its that way for the saints

Might be different for teams that don’t have a 50,000 person waiting list for season tickets

The 17th game should be played at a neutral site.

So every team gets 8-8-1 schedule every year. Play those games in Europe, Mexico, Canada, etc. Plus play them in huge college town states that have no NFL. Like Eugene, Tuscaloosa, Lincoln, Norman, etc. I think that would be huge for continuing to grow the product, here in the US and globally.

Doesn't sound like this is the route they will go. But they should.

Coaches like 3 preseason games to evaluate and as mentioned already, teams want the revenues. Players want less. League could cut it to 2 and do more multi team training camps and just let them scrimmage all week. Game day make it a 3-4 hr fan fest where kids can go to stadium with family and meet players, coaches. Teams will make their concessions and parking money while building better ties to their communities.

Rosters should be expanded overall and on game day. Let teams dress 53 for games. Maybe it can keep guys fresh. Would hate to see more backup qb play. Players at next negotiations better demand a big cut of new gambling revenues. Big bucks for league and teams.

Agree on the non-US games. They are lame. But that ship has already sailed and they will unfortunately continue to play games in London, Mexico City, etc.

I think 17 games is pretty lame honestly. 16 games/32 teams was just so perfectly symmetrical. 4 outside of conf, 6 in division, 6 others in conf w/ 1 other division and 2 w/ teams that finished same place in division as you did last year. Simple as it gets. Jibes for win total bets as well.

Now all previous records are basically meaningless, what constitutes a good full season has to be recalibrated, who is your extra game vs? probably gonna be some stupid way to determine that as well.

Whole thing is stupid imo...No need to fix what isn't broken.

the extra game is vs the other conference that you played 2 years ago. U play the team that finished in the same place that you did.

in 2021 all the AFC teams get the home game.

since the Dolphins finished in 2nd last year, they will be home vs the giants b/c the fins played the nfc east 2 seasons ago and the giants finished in 2nd in the nfc east last year.

I guess cowboys at pats?

First time ever a major American sport is scheduled to play an odd # of games. No good IMO, they should have dropped 2 exhibition games and go to 18 games with two byes for each team. More money for all. Regular season would start Labor day weekend and SB would be a week later in February.
