9 News Denver's Mike Klis reports contract talks between the Broncos and free agent Ronnie Hillman "have heated up."

Get excited. With only borderline-NFL talents Juwan Thompson and Kapri Bibbs behind C.J. Anderson on the depth chart, the Broncos are in the market for a No. 2 back. One alternative to re-signing ineffective Hillman would be to use a draft pick at tailback. It's perhaps a route that might serve Denver best. Hillman is a thoroughly mediocre player whose smallish body can't hold up to a pounding. He's drawn scant free agent interest elsewhere.

Texans released QB Brian Hoyer.

Hoyer, 30, set career bests in TD-to-INT ratio (19:7) and passer rating (91.4) as a nine-game starter for the Texans last year, but his stats were inflated by DeAndre Hopkins' breakout season, and Hoyer bottomed out in the playoffs with a four-interception Wild Card meltdown against Kansas City. Hoyer remains one of the NFL's better backups and should be snapped up quickly. The Texans tried trading Hoyer, but got no offers at the journeyman's $5.25 million base salary. They'll move forward with Brandon Weeden and Tom Savage behind Brock Osweiler.

The Philadelphia Daily News' Les Bowen reports Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith's (ACL, LCL) medical recheck revealed he is still dealing with a "drop-foot problem."

Foot drop is the inability to lift the front part of the foot causing the toes to drag along the ground while walking. The issue suggests Smith is still dealing with nerve damage after tearing his ACL and LCL in the Fiesta Bowl. Already not expected to play in 2016, the problem at the very least casts doubt on Smith's ability to make a full recovery. It would be surprising if he came off the board in the first round.

The Philadelphia Daily News' Les Bowen was told by an NFL source UCLA LB Myles Jack's knee is "a time bomb."

Jack's medical recheck did not go well, with CBS Sports' Dane Brugler reporting several teams had "long-term question marks." This is lying season, however, and it is possible teams are leaking bad information about Jack's knee in order to push him down the draft board. A top-five talent, it is anyone's guess where Jack ends up, but it would still be a shock if he slipped out of the top 15.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets are not expected to reach a deal prior to the draft.

ESPN's Rich Cimini has reported the Jets are offering more than the $8 million a year which had been rumored, but the two sides remain far apart. The Jets could attempt to parlay franchise-tagged DE Muhammad Wilkerson into a dramatic jump up the draft board to land a top quarterback, but short of a blockbuster, they are unlikely to find a Week 1 starter in the draft. New York is reportedly "interested" in free agent Brian Hoyer and will continue to express "interest" in any half-useful quarterback who becomes available, but a Fitzpatrick reunion remains the best possible outcome for both sides. This deal should happen eventually.

Jets exercised DE Sheldon Richardson's fifth-year option for 2017.

This was a no-brainer. Richardson has proven himself one of the most effective and versatile linemen in the game, and the option is guaranteed for injury only, meaning the Jets can get out of the deal if he suffers any setbacks off the field. The option will be worth just over $8 million.

According to Yahoo's Charles Robinson, the Broncos and unsigned franchise player Von Miller are roughly $4 million per year apart in contract negotiations.

The Broncos are believed to have offered $18 million per year, while Miller wants $22 million. It's a fair demand by Miller after far-inferior Olivier Vernon landed $17 million per year from the Giants. Robinson reports Denver has drawn a "financial line in the sand," and is unwilling to budge. On back-to-back franchise tags, Miller would cost only $16 million annually over the next two seasons. The Broncos' $18 million per-year offer would make Miller the NFL's second highest defensive player behind only Ndamukong Suh. Suh averages over $19 million per year.

Jordy Nelson (ACL) says he was able to do "everything" in the Packers' first offseason practice.

These are extremely light "practices," mind you, but it's another important step in the right direction. Next on the agenda for the 31-year-old (in May) wideout is running routes. Nelson figures to be babied along through the offseason, but has a good shot at being full go for training camp.

Rams re-signed QB Case Keenum to a one-year, $3.635 million contract.

Keenum was laughably tendered at the first-round level as the Rams pretended he would be their 2016 starter, but that's out the window now after their daring trade up to No. 1 overall. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport has speculated Keenum could be a trade candidate, but it's unlikely at that salary. Keenum will caddie for whichever signal caller the Rams make the first pick of the draft, perhaps starting the first few games of the season.

Breshad Perriman (PCL) participated in running drills as the Ravens began their offseason program on Monday.

The Ravens won't hold practices until May 24, but they released photos and video evidence of Perriman running full stride with teammates. Perriman was running fast on video, but didn't make any cuts. He was also spotted without a brace on his troublesome knee. The 26th overall pick in last year's draft, Perriman didn't play a single down as a rookie due to persistent PCL injuries.
