Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets

Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs (-7.5, 195)

The Heat should be thankful they’re not home for New Year’s. With all the parties, after parties and after-after parties happening on South Beach, it would be a wonder if anyone showed up for the game.

But they’re not in Miami, they’re in San Antonio.

Heading into Wednesday’s game against the New Orleans Hornets, the Heat have won five of their last six games and are picking up steam in the Southeast Division. During that span head coach Erik Spoelstra has shared the love at point guard, splitting time between Mario Chalmers and Carlos Arroyo.

The juggling seems to be paying off. Miami will counter San Antonio’s All-Star point guard Tony Parker with its two-pronged attack, trying to wear down the scrappy slasher with fresh bodies.

"Much has been made of big-ticket, All-Star-level point guards,'' Spoelstra told the Miami Herald. ''We have a two-headed point guard, and they've been playing very effectively for us.

"It's been a good formula, and so we'll just continue with it like that.''

That also leaves shooting guard Dwyane Wade free to move with the ball and create. He’s thrived with Chalmers and Arroyo handling the ball, averaging 28 points during the team’s three-game win streak.

Pick: Heat

Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls (-3.5, 184)

The Pistons blamed their early-season swoon on injuries. But now that Richard Hamilton, Ben Gordon and Tayshaun Prince have returned, the team had no idea how to play - or more importantly - win with each other.

Detroit has lost eight straight games heading into Thursday. The most recent defeat came at the hands of the New York Knicks, who shot 51 percent from the field and limited the Pistons to just 42 percent shooting in a 104-87 beating Tuesday night.

"We have a lot of basketball left, but we have to take advantage of all these opportunities," Pistons coach John Kuester told the media. "Getting people back does not mean that you forget what gets you in a position to win, and that's effort, your energy, your understanding of your game plan. We didn't successfully do that consistently."

Prince has struggled to contribute on offense, scoring a total of 11 points in his two games since returning from an abdominal injury. Fellow forward Charlie Villanueva has also struggled since the return of the stars. He bookended an eight-point performance with two goose eggs against the Knicks and Raptors while dealing with foot issues and illness.

"It's still going to take time," Hamilton told reporters of the transition in the lineup. "It's not something that we expect to happen overnight. That just doesn't happen, especially with me and Tayshaun being out as many games as we've been and (Gordon) being out as many games as he's been out.

"It's going to take time. The one thing we want to do is just stay positive with it, stay confident with it, and hopefully, it will turn around."

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets

New York Islanders at Ottawa Senators (-145, 5.5)

Don’t look now, but the Islanders have a good thing going, winning three of their last four games heading into Thursday’s matchup with the Ottawa Senators.

Leading the charge during this span is goaltender Dwayne Roloson. He’s backstopped the Isles in each of those wins, giving up just four goals on 108 total shots. Roloson stopped 41 shots for a 2-1 shootout win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Tuesday.

In the shootout, Roloson shut down the Jackets’ top guns, Kristian Huselius, Rick Nash and Fedor Tyutin, for the win.

"That's from being lucky and knowing the guy for a while," Roloson told the media. "Rick likes to do a couple of different things. I just tried to stay with him as best as I could."

New York now hits the road for four of its next five games. The Islanders are just 7-10-2-3 away from home this season but won their last two road contests – both over the New York Rangers.

Pick: Rangers

Vancouver Canucks at St. Louis Blues (+110, 5.5)

The St. Louis Blues’ list of New Year’s resolutions is getting longer the more the team struggles. The Blues have dropped three straight games, giving up 13 goals in that span.

The most recent defeat was a 4-3 loss to the Nashville Predators Tuesday night. St. Louis took seven penalties for 16 minutes in which the Predators netted a power-play goal in the second period. The Blues rallied in the third period, scoring two goals but couldn’t close the gap in time.

The offense isn’t the issue with the Blues. They’ve scored three goals in each of the past three games, pushing the final score over the total. On the year, St. Louis is 16-20-3 over/under but has played over the number in seven of its last 10 games.

Thursday's Selections ... NOTE:
Tennessee getting points against Virginia Tech was always going to be one of my strongest bowl plays.

Yes, I would have loved to have built the bankroll a bit higher but the bottom line is it is what it is.

It wouldn't suprise me if the Vols to beat Virginia Tech today just as I said North Carolina would on a Thursday night ESPN game as a 15 1/2 point underdog, one of my best calls of the year.

I like Navy to hang with Missouri. The free pick of Minnesota over Iowa State should be a fun game to watch.

That is my plan of attack on this last day of 2009. And it's a plan of attack I am very comfortable with.

Time to close out 2009 in style.

75 DIME - TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS - Who is Virginia Tech and the ACC to be laying more than a field goal to anybody out of the SEC?

There are two teams playing for the national championship game and that is Texas and Alabama.

Well, you saw Nebraska almost knock off the Longhorns in the Big 12 championship game and look what they did to Arizona last night.

Well, Tennessee for all intents and purposes beat Alabama, even if their stupid field goal kicker couldn't knock thru a 44 yarder with under a mintue to play.

That is the talent in which the Vols bring to the table in this matchup and for me the bottom line is this is way to many points for Tech to be laying.

This is a Tennessee Vols defense that has gotten much better as the year has gone on and with ex NFL defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin on the sidelines for the Vols with this much time to prepare, I like my chances with the dog tonight.

If Tennessee doesn't turn the ball over I feel just as I did with my call of North Carolina over Virginia Tech, I feel Tennessee can beat them to tonight.

The ACC is 1-7 SU, and 2-6 ATS versus the SEC with Clemson getting the cover over Kentucky as the only win lately.

And if you have an SEC bowl underdog facing a team off of a SU win, how about the SEC being 9-1 ATS.

Grab more than a field goal with Tennessee and don't be suprised boys and girls if Tennessee wins this game outright.

25 DIME - NAVY MIDSHIPMEN -Who is Missouri to be laying this kind of number to a Navy squad that is 3-1 ATS as an underdog this year?

I am talking about a squad that had a near miss win at Ohio State to start the year, battled Pittsburgh on the road to a 13 point loss which was much closer than the final score would lead you to believe and wins over Wake Forest and Notre Dame.

Navy loves to be bowling and it shows by their 4-1 ATS mark last 5 years.

Military academies are 20-8-1 ATS and it starts with their discipline and their preparation. Most other schools can't match it.

Navy is just the kind of team to give Missouri fits here and the Tigers are about to find out what Ohio State, Pitt, Wake Forest and Notre Dame found out, this is one pesky underdog.

The Tigers were hoping for a bigger bowl game as they were kind of passed over for the Insight Bowl, which was where Iowa State got to go.

Have to believe the team that wants to be here more is the team that will end up covering and for me that team is Navy.

Thursday College Hoops play GC

On Thursday the play is on NC.State. Game 565 at 6:00 eastern. I expect The Wolfpack to have their way with UNC Greensboro here tonight. ACC teams usually dispatch of this type of competiton with reletive ease. UNC Greensboro is 1-19 vs ACC teams and is just 4-11 ats in those games that have been lined through the years. They are a poor 2-13 straight up and against the spread vs teams who allow less than 65 points per game and have lost and failed to cover in alll 3 games in which they allowed 60 or less. UNCGB is a terrible non conference team and should be beat pretty good by NC.State. In College Bowl action I have 2 plays today one is from 2 systems that equal 43-2 ats. The College Bowl dog of the year is what results. The other play is from a Sweet 20-1 system. In college action I have a Big 5 star Triple angle side. Dont miss any of these Big plays as we end the year with a Bang. Jump on and cash out. Take NC.State tonight. BOL GC
