New Jersey lawmakers want voters to decide this fall whether the state should offer sports and Internet gambling.
Senate President Stephen Sweeney, Sen. Raymond Lesniak, and other Democratic lawmakers called yesterday for a gambling summit that would include industry leaders and policy experts.
They want a constitutional amendment to go before voters in the November elections in the event a federal ban on sports betting is ever struck down.
The proposed constitutional amendments would ask whether New Jersey should be able to offer sports betting, and whether it should be able to offer legal online versions of casino games. Lesniak is suing the federal government to overturn a ban on sports betting in all but four states. New Jersey missed out on its chance to legalize sports betting in 1991, before a federal law took effect restricting legal sports betting to states with laws allowing it already on their books. The 1992 law permitted it only in Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon.

TRENTON — An Assembly panel today advanced a bill that would allow electronic betting on horse racing in New Jersey.
The bill puts the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority in charge of creating a betting exchange through which bettors would place wagers. Bettors would have to prove they are New Jersey residents. Federal laws prohibit internet wagering.
The panel also approved a resolution to ask voters to amend the state constitution so the Legislature could enact laws allowing sports betting, pending the outcome of a lawsuit challenging a federal ban on the practice.

I don't think they voted on it today. I just went to the New Jersey legislature website and punched in the Bill number. All it shows is that it was introduced and referred to the Oversight and Gaming Committee on 6/14 and then reported out of Committee by a 5-0 vote on 6/17. Other Bills are updated to include today's vote. Maybe the revenue split amendment to the Bill held it up? I have no idea.

The Betting Exchange bill just passed the Assembly a little while ago by a vote of 78-0. Up to the Senate now.

I would think the local bookies in Philly, New York, New Jersey, etc. would all be against this if it ever passed. But there will always be a need for credit shops.

There is a federal ban. Eventually one of the non four states will get some balls and just start allowing betting. The Fed gov will the need to sue the state. I can't see a Fed court agreeing with a law that is clearly unconstitutional.. Question is will any state have the balls?
