Kudos to Lionel Richie & Quincy Jones for putting it together to help aid Haiti........

"We Are The World" Remake Takes On New Meaning

</SPAN><META name=ProgId content=Word.Document><META name=Generator content="Microsoft Word 11"><META name=Originator content="Microsoft Word 11"><LINK rel=File-List href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5Cbillyj%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><OBJECT id=ieooui classid=clsid:38481807-CA0E-42D2-BF39-B33AF135CC4D></OBJECT><STYLE>st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) }</STYLE><STYLE>#dummy-swfproxy { VISIBILITY: hidden}</STYLE>Lionel Richie was rightfully hesitant to rerecord "We Are the World," the 1985 global anthem he wrote alongside Michael Jackson to fight famine in Africa.

More than 40 artists under the umbrella USA for Africa joined to record the tribute that raised more than $60 million.

Richie felt the song was iconic and should not be revisited, but he changed his mind after the recent devastation in Haiti following the tragic 7.0 earthquake in January that left more than 100,000 people dead and millions displaced.

The new version, "We Are the World - 25 for Haiti," and its video, which just premiered in advance

From the moment the remake performed by more than 70 artists called Artists For Haiti was announced, speculation set in as people wondered how contemporary artists would interpret the song. Richie and producer Quincy Jones decided not to feature artists who appeared on the original version

Comparing the original to the 2010 rendition is inevitable in a few instances. Those who remember the first version can't help but think of Cyndi Lauper when they hear an emotional Celine Dion breathe new energy into the memorable, "well, well, well/let us realize, a change will only come" or when teen newcomer Justin Bieber takes on Richie's opening lines.

But the covers are not what stick in your mind after watching the eight-minute clip that opens with remarks from Jamie Foxx encouraging viewers to "do more than just watch but to reach deep in your heart and give anything you can."

For me, "We Are the World - 25 for Haiti" calls to mind the hopeful little boy in the sky blue T-shirt captured in the beginning of the video, standing on the roof of a dilapidated house, smiling and waving.

There is just enough footage of the Haitian people singing and rebuilding interspliced with the celebrity studio recordings to keep the video's purpose.
It is not easy to rebrand such a well-known song, but they've done it.

Michael Jackson remembered
Michael Jackson is the only artist from the original version who appears in the remake. For his first verse, footage from his 1985 appearance is used posthumously and is joined by his sister Janet as the two sing as a duet. This was a request of their mother, Katharyn.
A bonus guitar solo

Oranthi, the young female recording artist in Jackson's "This Is It" movie adds a guitar solo to the song. Jones said that Prince wanted to add guitars 25 years ago, but they did not want to add that element then.
Remote appearances
Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, and Fergie did not attend the taping that took place at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles on February 1. They recorded their vocals later remotely and were spliced in.

Hip Hop Greek chorus fits nicely
I had my fingers crossed, hoping that the rap chorus would work in an otherwise classic pop ballad. And it does. Instead of forcing an in-your-face rap track into the song, the lead-in is a subtle, natural progression. Props to will.i.am who penned the additional bars that are introduced closer to the song's ending. The Black Eyed Peas frontman is joined by LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Lil' Wayne, Swizz Beatz, and others. The lyrics tell the Haitian people to stay encouraged.

Part of the verse originally sung by Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, and Al Jarreau was revamped with lyrics more relevant to the situation in Haiti. Enrique Iglesias and Barbra Streisand perform the revised lyrics.
omitted lines:
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand
revised lines:
So their cries for help will not be in vain
We can't let them suffer
No we cannot turn away
Right now they need a helping hand

'We Are The World' Modernized For Haiti And 25th Anniversary

Even though making a 25 year anniversary recording of "We Are The World" seemed like a good idea, songwriter Lionel Richie was not interested in redoing the classic, iconic song that united artists to raise money to fight famine in Africa.
It took another catastrophe to make him reconsider.
"We were 25 and we actually didn't have that cause," Richie said at a press conference during the "We Are The World - 25 For Haiti" taping Monday. "So we were going to hold back and then all of a sudden Haiti happened.

Producer Quinicy Jones added, "We got a text message that said coincidence is God's way of staying anonymous. So it was a coincidence and a serious one."
Within days after Haiti's tragic 7.0 earthquake on January 12, Jones and Richie began working to schedule an all-star remake.
They enlisted Randy Phillips, Richie's manager and AEG Live CEO, Wyclef Jean, and producer RedOne to help pull the effort together.

Richie co-wrote the song with the late Michael Jackson.
I was honored to be able to attend the press conference and witness some of the taping at the historic Henson Recording Studios where the original was recorded when I was 15-years-old.
I understand why Richie was hesitant to revisit the global classic, but I think supporting a cause like helping rebuild Haiti is worthwhile reason to change his mind.
"We Are The World - 25 For Haiti" will make its broadcast debut Friday, February 12 during NBC's coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
The producers have stressed that the new version has maintained some elements of the original, but there are plenty differences. Below, I explore how the two versions differ.
Award Show Proximity
Coordinating the schedules of dozens of prominent music figures is no easy task. So both recordings of "We Are The World" were scheduled to coincide with major music industry events. In 1985, that event was the 12th Annual American Music Awards which taped on January 28, the final day of the "We Are The World" recording. In 2010, "We Are The World - 25 For Haiti" took place on February 1, the day after the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards.
3D Special Effects
Fans will be able to impose themselves into the group performance scene, Jones told the media on hand for the "We Are The World - 25 For Haiti" taping. "We even had two people in the chorus with green outfits on so that people can go online and put their picture in the crowd," he said.
Hip Hop Chorus
Rap music had yet to dominate the pop charts in 1985 when the original version of "We Are The World" was recorded. To appropriately modernize the song, Jones and Richie felt it was necessary to add a hip-hop element. "will.i.am wrote a section that kinda pertained to Haiti," said Phillips. Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, and Snoop Dogg are among the hip-hop artists who participate in the rap chorus.
New Lyrics
The majority of the original lyrics are in tact. But Richie did make some changes. "Lionel wrote a couple lines in the song, changed some words to bring it up to date," Phillips said. In responding to a special request from Kathryn Jackson, the mother of the late Michael Jackson, a Maya Angelou poem would be incorporated, Jones said. "It's the most beautiful thing you ever saw," he said. "It's funny, warm, reaching. It says, ‘We are, and you are we, and we are the world.' It ends with that." Jones said they will talk with Jackson's children about reading the poem for the closing of the song.

Nearly Double The Talent
More than 40 artists were involved with the first rendition. Twenty-two artists including Jackson, Richie, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, and Cyndi Lauper provided vocals for the song. An additional 20 plus artists joined in to sing the chorus. As of press time, more than 70 entertainers had lent their voices to the new verion, among them, Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Toni Braxton, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, and Sugarland. However, more artists were still slated to come on board. Janet Jackson was scheduled to record one of Michael's parts via a remote feed from Atlanta, Richie explained. He added that there were also additional artists collaborations in the works.
<META name=ProgId content=Word.Document><META name=Generator content="Microsoft Word 11"><META name=Originator content="Microsoft Word 11"><LINK rel=File-List href="file:///C:%5CDOCUME%7E1%5Cbillyj%5CLOCALS%7E1%5CTemp%5Cmsohtml1%5C01%5Cclip_filelist.xml"><STYLE>#dummy-swfproxy { VISIBILITY: hidden}</STYLE>
The producers did decide not to feature any of the first group of performers on the updated track. "This is about a newer generation mixed with an older generation, but we didn't want to do the same thing again," Phillips said. "It would have been easy to call those people and say, ‘Let's go do it again.' [But] a conscious decision was made not to do it."

New Beneficiary
"We Are The World" raised $63 million in revenue. More than half of the proceeds was used to purchase food, medicine, and refugee services in Africa. Remaining monies supported more than 500 various projects in 18 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Ninety-nine percent of the money generated for "We Are The World - 25 For Haiti" will be donated to Haiti, Phillips said.

Prince Is Welcome To Play Guitar
Jones clarified rumors of why Prince did not participate in the original. He said that Prince did come to the recording but declined to be involved when he was not allowed to play guitar on the song. "I wanted him to sing right next to Michael," Jones said about Prince. "He wanted to play guitar. We didn't want guitar. We want guitar now."

Of course it's a great thing they're doing, but just to throw it out there........

After watching them both back to back again, it's clear that it's almost impossible for that original group to be toppled.

Even just vocally talent-wise the only ones from the new group probably on the originals' level who had solos are Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Pink, and Fergie.

That new kid Justin Bieber opening up the song in Lionel Richie's spot was a terrible decision though.

But I really like the part where Jamie Foxx mimics Ray Charles' vocals.....

thought it was a very solid update on the original....the original was much cleaner and more harmonious, this was a little edgier, but so is the world.....

I think it was a nice take on the song, and very glad they included michael.....

i just watched "this is it" last night, and it was amazing....

The girl guitarist featured in this version, was the main guitarist for the ill-fated tour, and she has some solo scenes in the movie, and she is amazing on guitar....we will hear a lot more of her in the future...

glad to Pink was there....but where were the likes of Beyonce, Christina, Justin, chris daughtry, carrie underwood, taylor swift, and others who are hot right now.........in 85, it was a who's who of the charts at the time, didnt seem that way as much this time......

while i appreciate the thought, and hope good comes because of this production, this new version does seem pretty soul-less to me.

1st go-round was music icons. all of them.. some of greatest vocalists ever.

this time was comical..

jamie foxx doing a ray charles impression was offensive .. what's the matter jamie , your own voice that bad ?

letting that kid open the song ruined it from word go....

yeah i didnt have a problem with that, seeing as he played him in the movie and did so with Ray's blessing.....i think it was a tribute more than a mimic..

now starting it with an unknown kid was probably not a great idea....hell right after him was Jennifer Hudson from Dreamgirls fame, and she sounded amazing...maybe should have let her start it out right...

I watched the new video and thought it was absolutely horrible. Does Lionel Richie need publicity that bad to rekindle his dead career?

The kid at the opening absolutely horrible. World Number One would've been a better choice or anyone else for that matter.

I am not being predujice but 95% of the artists that made up the video were black. I watched the video and hardly recognized anyone. Why the computer voice, why the rap, why the reading of the lyrics on paper, you serious they don't know the song lyrics by now?

The first go round it was new and rushed together for the cause, this one had time to prepare but came off bush league at best.

The star power in the first absolutely trumps this effort and they should be ashamed for absolutely butchering the original song. This is one song that should have been left alone and let stay in musical history as it was meant to be.

All these so called talents can't write a song? Wait they can't sing for the most part anyway.

I am wondering what Streisand, Bennett, and Dion were doing in this song, they were out of place and of course you have Ritchie trying to help Dion hit her notes, ummmm Lionel she sings better than you buddy.

The only positive I give is the touch of adding Michael to it, but there was motivation behind doing that as usual.

I give this two thumbs down and while I understand the cause, they screwed this up so bad, it's pathetic.

I actually think Lionel and Quincy are getting some $$ for this remake somewhere down the line of revenue stream. I think the proceeds are very thoughtful, but I just wish they would have done a brand new song instead of tampering with the old one. IMO

Great cause.

But when Nicole Richie is on the list, really hard not to be cynical.

How much of this is charity, how much is career advancement?
