I've been off strip in Vegas and it didn't seem that bad Jake.

Are you frequenting places in bad areas a lot or something? I know car theft is an issue, where was it?

There are good and bad areas. The problem for me is that 90% of Vegas is the bad area. Car was stolen when I lived closer to the strip outside of China Town and I'm never living anywhere but Summerlin or Henderson again. Glad to be back in the good part of town. The allure of a large 2-bed, 2-bath with pool for only $800 got the best of my girlfriend at the time so I agreed to move there with her. Bad idea. Lots of crazy people in that neighborhood.

Also the thing that pisses me off most about the car being stolen (they did recover it a few weeks later) is that they took my spark plugs and my donut tire. The battery I figured would be gone. CD player had no chance. The distributor was kind of an odd thing to take but whatever. But the spark plugs and donut tire? Just strange.

What percentage of the homeless would u say consist of people who relocate to Vegas and lose everything due to drugs and gambling? Personally I couldnt do it because of the extreme heat and dangerous insects. Hate bugs...and if they can kill me....fukk that. Also whatever your salary is for your job offered you can cut that in half right now if a regular gambler at the cainos. Possibly joining the homeless legion in a few yrs if lacking self control.

Tough to say. Most of the time it's dejected looking people under age 30 that want money outside of gas stations. When I'm at the bars you can tell most of the people playing the games are playing with the last of their money or at the very least aren't well off enough to be gambling in the first place.

Basically I'd recommend living here for maybe a year when you are young and want to party but it definitely does grind you down after a bit of time. Luckily SportsOptions treats me well so I have plenty of time to go on vacations and what not when I need a break. Best job in the world.

Pretty good article that is chopped into a few pieces about the downsides of living in Vegas:

http://www.casinotop10.net/10-worst-things-about-living-in-las-vegas-1.shtml

I've never lived there, but I know a few people who tried...every one of them moved out within a year. It's the absolute worst city to live in if you have any kind of vices whatsoever...women, drugs, gambling (obviously). Vegas is the type of place that can find your weakness and make your life a living hell.

The strip is great, but the immediate surrounding area is a total dump. Reminds me of USC's campus in a weird way...very pristine and well-manicured campus, but just two blocks away, you can see gangbangers having shootouts in front of liquor stores.

Texas experienced stronger job growth than the rest of the nation from 2000 to 2013, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

There just seems more to do in Vegad(other than gambling) in Vegas compared to San Antonio.

I've been here 2 years now and to be honest I'm not a big fan of the city. My car got stolen and there are homeless people everywhere asking for money. Lots of shady people in town. Lots of mental illness. I love my job which is why I'm happy enough here but it's a dirty city with lots of nutjobs. Drivers here are the worst I've ever come across. No one knows how to drive here at all. I live around Summerlin which is a nice area but I wish I was a bit closer to camping spots in the woods. Takes a few hours to get to Utah for anything decent. Also I've seen far too many scorpions and black widow spiders for one lifetime. Basically... weather is nice, a pool is almost a necessity during the summer. Prepare to be asked for money pretty much anywhere you stop. Stay in Summerlin or Henderson if you want nice neighborhoods. If you plan to go to the casino regularly you'll probably end up broke (most do). It's not a city I'd want to raise a family in really. Vegas can be fun but most get burnt out after a few months.
Interesting. I never saw any insects while living there.

The black widow spiders are massive and out on the back patio in the summer here. They never mess with me and I leave them alone. No worries, just kind of creepy. The ex got into bed and an Arizona bark scorpion crawled up her leg and stung her twice. Lots of pain but as long as you aren't really old, really young, or really sick (or a small animal) they aren't very dangerous. They are getting brought up here on palm trees I guess. News ran a story about them maybe 6 months back. I heard her screaming so I ran in there thinking it was a bee then this 2.5-inch long thing comes running at me on the bed. I hit it at least 10 times with a hardcover book. Just going to town on this little dude... he kept coming for far longer than I figured he'd be capable of. Tough little bastards.

I've always toyed with the idea to move there, was very close to doing it about 10 years ago in early 20s..

I'll say this, never seen a place with more mixed reviews from people living there, I would have one person telling me one thing, then someone the complete opposite.

I still think of it, but the biggest reason would be the sports gambling.. Tough to justify moving based on that.

good luck in whatever you choose.

I'd choose San Antonio... especially if you are interested in raising kids.

Whenever the wife and I want to go away for a few days, we drive down to San Antone.

I would think it's like any other big city you pick a good neighborhood it would be great. You pick a shitty one and it would suck (kids or not).

With so many states allowing gambling and online gambling, if you are a degenerate in say Nebraska (casino's in Omaha/Council Bluffs) you can lose all your money there almost as easily as in Vegas. I've always heard most locals stay away from the strip unless they have friends/family visiting.

I wouldn't have a problem living in Vegas if the job was right. Not 1st on my list by any means but I could be happy anywhere. But happy with my job and location so haven't looked into moving in 10 years or so.

It says dallas on his location, lol. Nice to have you back GTC

In all seriousness, just give Vegas a shot if you really wanna do it. If you have little attachments you can always change course....

Live in Henderson/Summerlin area or don't move there. 1 thing with a place like vegas is it is so new development wise that all construction looks the same. Therefore uninformed people can easily talk themselves into living in bad/high crime areas. This ropes a lot of people in. You drive around in shitty areas and they really do look fine for the most part compared to other parts of the country.

I'd take Vegas weather over TX weather too fwiw

I've had some non-gambling friends move out there because of employment and after a couple of years all of them couldn't wait to get out of there. Jake's points are all spot on. If you're trying to live the life of a gambler or grinder give it a try. If you're trying to be "normal" and raise a family etc I would never consider it.

Not a good place to raise a family...schools are shitty unless you can afford private. I have a house in Summerlin i bought for a rental...but a bit Disney for my taste...
If you do move there..STAY THE HELL OUT OF THE CASINOS unless you are going for a show or dinner.

I moved here after college 3 years ago and got into real estate. I'm from Napa Valley area so Vegas is quite different weather but I love it. The weather is always pretty good, even when it's 110 degrees at least it's not humid. Some of the best golfing in the country and so many courses out here. There is always something to do, it's really nice being able to go to dinner and find restaurants open past 10 o'clock. Whenever I go back to California now I can't believe how early everything closes. Obviously this being a sports betting forum is another reason why I love vegas. Like other people said there are nice areas and very bad areas. I would compare Summerlin to Scottsdale AZ, nicest part of Vegas and very clean. I wouldn't want to raise a family here I don't think but for someone single and my age (27) I don't think there is anywhere else I'd rather be right now. If you can keep the gambling from getting out of hand and do it for enjoyment or entertainment purposes like I do you should be fine. Good weather, good golf, great food and restaurants, awesome pools and spas, great nightlife. Love Vegas
