Frank Lampard seems set to make his MLS debut this weekend, although he has already been named to the MLS All-Star team as per the commissioner’s decision.
The announcement has sent a wave of discussion as to why both he and Steven Gerrard were named to the team, despite the fact that neither one played a single minute in league play this season. Their accomplishments abroad are well documented, but they certainly do not deserve the honor, and it took away the opportunity from players who have been on the field all season and hoped to earn a spot in the All-Star game.
David Villa was an obvious choice to earn his spot with his 10 goals that lead the team, only trailing Sebastian Giovinco and Kei Kamara for the league lead in goals.
His two goals last weekend were part of an eight-goal barrage between Toronto and NYCFC, and there could have been even more than that. Both Villa and Giovinco missed penalty kicks in the first half, although they both did convert on chances later in the game.
Villa scored the game’s opening goal to make it 1 - 0 in the 17th minute, and the table was set for an instant classic match.
After an own goal that put NYCFC up 2 - 0 just before the half-hour mark, Sebastian Giovinco scored a natural hat trick in nine minutes to make the game 3 - 2 going to halftime.
