I heard an announcer say something about that fumble being questionable because of something like "forward progress".
I got the impression that he thought the whistle should have been blown long before the fumble because of the lack of forward progress.
Does anyone know the rules that may apply in this situation. I actually had Cinncy in this game but just curious about the call.
We could see the runner was still on his feet but going nowhere. Should the whistle have been blown?

It was a close call. In the slow motion replay it definitely looked like he was stopped. In real time it could have gone either way.

They could easily install computer chips into the refs whistles to determine when whistle actually was blown.

That would be too smart for NFL. They are more worried about showing female side judges running out to spot balls.

They could also put tiny gps chips in balls to indicate when crossed or touch end zone plane…sensors on sidelines to indicate if both feet touch…

And why do some QBs struggle to hear calls come in from sidelines, cupping both ear holes while some do not? But maybe that’s a good thing?

Technology surely available and NFL owners-billionaires, certainly could pay less to shitty CommissionER vs into making game better with less inept refs and bad play calls

Lol..the NFL calls whatever they want.
This is what it is. Have seen similar blown dead in that situation.
Stevenson should have stopped fighting for yards and worried about ball security at that point

The play call was poor there, Pats needed to throw the ball in that position. They have enough issues
just getting the ball into the end zone, they were worried about keeping the clock running instead of scoring with that play call.

So, is there a rule that the play is dead when forward progress stops?
I'd be interested to know what the actual rule book says. Anyone know of a good link to NFL rules for the layman that can be easily understood, lol.

Not sure there’s a “rule”

refs discretionary call. Blow it when they “feel” play dead. Some probably little longer to see if ball can be stripped while others might blow to minimize injuries & late hits…

I've noticed that they let those scrum plays go longer than they did in the past. There have been plenty of "slow" whistles this year.
