This is the answer.

How many of you throwing stones in this thread does pro bono work in your field of expertise for for free while the people in charge make millions off your free labor in the name of patriotism and country pride.

Since the Olympics is all about Patriotism, why doesn't NBC donate all their advertising profits to helping veterans. Since one commits suicide every hour and all. It's just another commercialized sporting event, nothing more. It's just a better hustle because you don't have to pay the labor.

Hockey's more of an international sport like soccer, they grow up playing each other, and it's very competitive. Basketball is mainly an American sport.

Honestly if I were a star NBA player I would maybe go play in 1 token Olympics event just to say I did.
But I promise you I would not be doing that every offseason or even close.

Once or twice max.

The Olympics is the biggest scam going. I don't believe the players should feel obligated to play. They should not be made to feel guilty.

It shortens careers.

i have never felt any sort of country pride when the USA wins a gold medal.
I don't need for my country to win a pole volt medal in order for me to feel proud to be an American.

I could not care less if the basketball team beats or loses to Angola by 40 points in a basketball game .

Yeah, MJ had the right idea. He didn't even play in the World Championships.

Just 1 Olympics, get that gold medal, promote yourself on the world stage and keep it moving.

People forget that international bball isn't every 4 years, it is really every 2 years with the World Championships.

multi-factorial.

let's start here;

'How many of you throwing stones in this thread does pro bono work in your field of expertise for for free while the people in charge make millions off your free labor in the name of patriotism and country pride.'

if someone were to tell me to guess the nationality of said poster? NO HESITATION. American. 2nd place woulnd't even be on the radar screen..........'me me me ..money money money.....wealth wealth wealth ...' Culture.

and now here;

'The answer is easy when you consider the below description of NBA players today:

pri·ma don·na
ˌprēmə ˈdänə/
noun
noun: primadonna

a very temperamental person with an inflated view of their own talent or importance.
synonyms: ego, self-important person, his nibs, temperamental person, princess, diva, pooh-bah; informal drama queen
"a city council filled with prima donnas"

the sport is littered with them . The chap that's the MVP? when he hits a 'critical' 3-pointer his reaction is as if he's the next coming. Someone remind the kid he's playing a silly game

'part of the reason is that olympics hockey is in middle of NHL season so it's not like players are wishing they were on an extended vacation... not sure it's a great comparison

the better comparison is that a soccer player, unless they are seriously injured, will never turn down an invite to play in a major tournament which are all held after the regular season for the top players. Ronaldo, Messi, Bale, Rooney don't turn down Euro2016 because they want to bang some tail in Monaco...their nations would disown them'

in the USA, its like, 'ya i wouldnt play either!!....give me money to play , nigga!!!'.....:)

generalizing , of course

Matt Duchene was named to play for Team Canada in Sept. Made the team. He's a multi-millionaire. He called it the greatest achievement in his life. He'll be there

Their nations are inferior to the US. They pretend that sports is actually important. We see it more as entertainment.

Who cares if their nations would disown them? Their nations are run by idiots, its Europe.

Maybe they should put that energy into protecting themselves so we don't have to?

And most of the star NBA players have played a ton of international bball, which most of you probably had no interest in watching because international ball is pretty boring. Maybe it'll be better as other countries play the game more but this isn't a great Olympic sport.

I'm just saying, maybe their fanatical child-like devotion to a sport has perhaps played a role in being lackluster in other areas?

Not the reason that Schrieber predicted the US would lap Europe economically in "The American Challenge" but it is an issue nonetheless.

As far as debt, defending the free world ain't exactly free. :)

Why doesn't NBC donate the advertising proceeds to veterans addicted to heroin? Since it is all about Patriotism and nationalistic pride.

If it isn't about the money and it isn't just a giant commercial endeavor then this should be pretty easy.

We're not selfish, we're just realists and we don't romanticize the Olympics like y'all do. No different than playing college sports for free is stupid if you don't have to.

Don't pretend you aren't a capitalist Ric, I know you.

of course . Hence, please pay your American athletes for their generosity in participating. If you don't, some will stay home

Go play, stay home. Do whatever you want.

Liberty over collectivism. Not too worried if MJ dunks on some Russian dude in the '96 Olympics or not. If he doesn't want to go after playing a grueling 100 game season then it is fine with me. It's just sports, just because society places a greater value on it than they should doesn't mean it is actually that important.

There are also more fights at European soccer events, more death threats for players, etc....I'm glad as a culture we don't take athletics as seriously as them. It's actually kindof pathetic to me TBH.

No idea. Probably has to do with being a society that is addicted to faux-outrage.

Olympics isn't really appointment TV for me, maybe others enjoy it more and want to see the best athletes in the world?

Track and field, swimming, decathlon, etc..Not too riveted to findout who is the best at exercise but to each their own. We all have different entertainment tastes.

We're about to have Trump, you think we need gold medals? His house has gold-plated interior design, we got all the gold we need.
