Toronto makes 6. Not bad considering the US pop is 10X that of Canada.
And Canadians have to drive through snowstorms to get to the games.

This list includes the 3 largest cities popul wise, Tor, Mont & Van.

How the hell did I forget the Leafs.

The point is teams like Florida, Phoenix, Nashville, Carolina are all struggling.

The Stars are not doing well at all here either.

The league can' survive on just those 6 teams. Detroit is a city in economic ruins. They don't have the TV revenue that covers the majority of cost that most sports do.

NHL aint based in canada though and it isnt popular here.

I don't know if i'd expect it to ever be popular in warm climate cities.

Frankly i find it kind of boring, maybe even as much as the NBA,
but MLS takes the cake. A good action or scifi movie beats 'em all.
Probably porn as well, depending on my mood & testosterone level.

No way is the NBA better than the NHL. I love basketball and CBB is 2nd best sport behind CFB, but the NBA is fucking joke.

“The players do not have the economic wherewithal to sit out one year.”

This is where the disconnect is with many fans. What's the average household salary in the US...something like $50k?

If the average yearly NBA salary is $5 million, that's 100 times the national average. That's also probably around $3 million net after taxes, which is more than enough money to live very comfortably for the rest of your life. You could own a massive house, a few cars and then probably live off of whatever interest you make at a bank without ever having to touch the principle.

I don't think you'll see many average joes feeling too sorry for hoopsters who may have to forgo a year of salary.

its a personal preference.

NBA for me is either my first or 2nd favorite sport behind college basketball. NHL to me is a joke. if you want to compare popularity and financials though, NHL is closer to MLS then NBA. financially NBA is probably better than MLB. the only reason why this thread was made was because stern is going to be tightening his belt and he doesnt expect the players union to cave. has nothing to do with the financials of the league. has to do with succeeding through this economic crisis, which all sports will have to do.
