The NBA trade deadline came and went, and while the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Miami Heat stood pat, the Los Angeles Lakers settled for a couple of minor deals in order to somewhat improve their status as contenders in the Western conference, after failing to land and major stars. The Lakers will face one of the team’s they are likely to meet in the postseason when they play Memphis on Sunday, while the Celtics play a must-win per head game at home, and the Thunder and Heat battle in what could be a preview of this year’s NBA finals.

The Celtics have trucked through a rocky season filled with many highs and lows, and at this point it is pretty much clear that they are destined for finish in one of the 5-8 seeds in the Eastern conference standings. Boston has played well some nights, and awful on others, but a home date Sunday against one of the worst teams in the conference has to be a win for a playoff hopeful. Washington is banking on John Wall and the ability to surround him with talent down the road, but for now the Wizards are set to be the next victim of Rajon Rondo and the not-so-big-anymore three.

This will be a battle of two of the surprise teams in the NBA this season, with both the 76ers and the Spurs exceeding expectations so far. Philadelphia is in the top-four in the Eastern conference on the basis of some excellent defensive play and transition offense, while the Spurs have been just as good at their own end and even better on offense to climb to second in the West. The Sixers haven’t been awful on the road, but San Antonio has been incredible at home, and should cover the price per head bookie spread.

Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh take their talents to Oklahoma City this weekend for what projects to be the most exciting game on the Thunder’s regular season schedule. Oklahoma City lost just four games through its first 23 at home, but they should get a good test from the pay head favorites to win the NBA championship.

Pau Gasol will be happy to have reached this meeting against his brother at the Staples Center, and with the Lakers having won seven of their previous 10 games heading in to Tuesday night’s action, it looks like they may have finally turned the corner. Los Angeles sits third in the Western conference, moving ahead of the Clippers this week, and they will want to keep that hot streak going against an opponent they could meet as price per head favorites in the opening round of the playoffs.
