The RX NASCAR Brief – July 11
NASCAR Raceday – Busch, Edwards favored at Chicagoland
This week's stop on the Sprint Cup series is the LifeLock.com 400, which will be held at Chicagoland Speedway, one of the “cookie-cutter” 1.5-mile tracks which make up much of the NASCAR circuit. Tony Stewart is the defending race-winner in this event, and Chevrolet has won six of the seven races at Chicagoland.
Kyle Busch is favored at 500 , and the No.18 driver cannot seem to do anything wrong this season after winning last week at Daytona, which was his second victory in three races. Busch has won on every type of track in NASCAR this season for a series-high total of six, and is a legitimate threat every time he steps into a racecar, no matter which series. Busch also has a great 10.0 finishing average in three races at Chicagoland.
Carl Edwards is next at 600, and the No.99 driver has three wins this year, all on 1.5-mile tracks. He narrowly was beat out by Busch last week at Daytona, so he will be eager to assert himself this week. However, he has a finishing average of 20.7 in three races at Chicagoland, not one of his best tracks.
Edwards' teammate at Roush-Fenway Racing, Matt Kenseth, is rated at 700, and the No.17 driver has been the hottest racer in the Sprint Cup besides Busch. Kenseth, the 2003 series champion, has reeled off eight top-tens in his last nine races to put him at ninth in the standings after a poor start had many wondering if he was even going to make the Chase. Kenseth also has an impressive 10.1 finishing average in seven races at Chicagoland.
Hendrick teammates Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are joined by Kasey Kahne at 800, and out of these three, Johnson would probably be the best choice. The No.48 driver and back-to-back defending series champion's average finish of 9.2 in six races is second among active drivers despite never winning at Chicagoland.
The only two men to win twice at Chicagoland are Stewart, who is listed at 1000, and Kevin Harvick, who comes in at 2500. Most of the attention surrounding Stewart has been next season's move out of the No.20 car to an owner/driver role at the newly dubbed Stewart-Haas Racing, so now he can concentrate solely on winning races. Stewart kicked off his annual summer streak with a win here last season, and he has a finishing average of 11.0 in seven races here. Meanwhile, Harvick was fourth here last season, and his average finish of 8.0 is tops among current drivers.
