Yep....and then you have a homer coming on here saying the hire "makes sense". It was the worst hire this off-season. If he was going to a lower level P5 school, I could see it. The Nebraska's of the world shouldn't settle for sub-.500 coaches who has only won 10 games 1 time in his career. But hey....some of the homers think it "makes sense"!!

Ok bud, since you clealry know so much about what makes a great hire, please, please, submit your resume to be an analyst on ESPN, CBS, and FOX Sports, because clearly you know more than they do....

http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/12/nebraska_hires_mike_riley_and.html

Spoiler alert, my link is to actual reputable football analysts and not four laughable sites...I wasnt going to say anything at first, but really, I mean you tried supporting your argument by link a SB Nation article. Lastly pal, and I was going to let this go too, until you brought it up again, learn to do some basic math. Riley isnt "sub .500 as a coach".....

Also, still waiting on your answers to these questions you have conveniently ignored:

Does Riley fit the following:
Someone willing to allow the fans into the program

Someone willing to respect the traditions in place
Someone who will bring in top recruits
A great evaluator of talent
A great developer of players
Ability to produce winning teams and compete with the best teams we play
Someone who represents the university in a respectful manor
Someone who respects and values in-state players and the walk on program

Let me ask this, what would have been more reasonable expectations for him at Oregon St.?

*This one wasnt posed to you, but would like your take on it. It is in reference to Riley not having a great record in his last five games of the sesason, over the last five years: I like that you mention his record yet leave out that 12 of those 25 games were against top 25 teams, 5 of which were in the top 15, and 4 of which were top five teams. So over a 1/3 of those games were against the top 15 teams in the country. Do you typically expect Oregon St. and teams of their caliber to do very well against those qualities of opponents?

I find it interesting you keep avoiding the questions I ask, and simply resort to calling me a "homer".

Dude,

Nebraska hired a dud. I'm sorry you can't see that....but I told you, I'm not having an argument w/ a homer. Good luck this season though. I'm sure Nebraska's next hire, in 3 or 4 years, will go much better.....

Im one that has pointed that out. Its a select few that can say that and he did it as a rookie coach. It's impressive. I personaly think his firing was more to do with all the negativity surrounding his program. The chancelor wanted him gone since 2010 TAM and he knew it and lashed out at the fans and critics. When Osborne retired as AD it really took a toxic turn. It was bad. Now, if he'd have won just one conference title he still might be there. For all those wins not one title and also look at the losses during that span; 20+ to UCLA, Michigan and Ohio St. Losses of 31, 35 and 39 to Wisconsin, and all on national tv. When it wasnt that is was poking his finger at players, nearly striking refs, cursing and overall embarrasing himself and the entire state. Cameras focused on him for it, so it bacame a distraction. So I can say that I think it was much more about that than total wins. I think he's a grear DB coach and talent evaluator. His pass defenses and third down defenses were among some of the best, but his later versions began to hemorage in the run game. He was too stubborn to find help. When he had a chance to hire experienced coaches (like Stoops as DC) he hired the rookie grad assiatant he brought from LSU. He also hired a rookie OC. He failed at being CEO. I still think he has greatness in him as a coach, but it didnt work out for him.

I know where you are coming from. I remember when Oklahoma fans wanted Venables outed and Mike Stoops to return. Now Mike is off the field and in the press box and Venables put it on OU in their bowl game. Fans are fans but donors have pull. Donors influence programs including hiring and firing and they are just as likely to be wrong as anyone else. There are people who became disgruntled with Stoops and his decision to repunt againt OSU. I think he is out to prove himself this year and I think he as the resources to do it. I still think Justin Fuente is in the wings and will eventually be the one to replace Bob when the time comes.

I will gladly do so, but I think you and coach are off the mark with the "homer" comments. All I have said is that his hiring made sense. How on Earth is that being a homer? I didn't claim he will instantly turn things around, didn't claim he would have a incredible record year one, or anything else. It baffles me that people with little knowledge of the University and program itself think they are better at determine if a hire makes sense, than the fans of that institution, then can someone a homer for that...

Let me ask this, what determines if a hiring makes sense better than if someone matches he values of the university and what they expect from a coach?

If you want someone who can dunk the ball chances are you won't hire a guy who is 5'6". You have to time your changes correctly so that you are not just hiring to be hiring because you want change. One thing is that Riley inherits a pretty talented group of players but they will have to integrate a more pass oriented offense and that may take time. Pelini was not press oriented and that was part of the equation but being on the same level as Saban in terms of consistent success is hard to ignore.

Sounds good man. So you won't discuss your position, answer direct questions that are asked, but you will allude to the conversation in other posts. Makes sense.

Arkansas goes into it’s third season under HC Bret Bielema. In 2013 the Razerbacks went 3-9 SU and improved to 7-6 in 2014 despite facing Steele’s #1 toughest schedule. In the process they 10-3 ATS going 7-1 at home and 3-2 on the road. If you look at their last four games they were very impressive as the season went on. They shut out LSU (17-0) and Ole Miss (30-0) in back to back games, lost to Mizzou on the road by a TD and whooped the Longhorns in the Texas Bowl 31-7.

The Razerbacks go into 2015 with 9 returners on offense and an average pt differential of +12.7 ppg.
They have a new OC in Dan Enos. Steele shows them as returning 89.1% of their offense from 2014.

They return 6 on their defense which ranked #10 in 2014. DC Robb Smith returns.

I can see this team improving their record in 2015 and even being a contender in in the West. They start the season with games against UTEP, Toledo, Texas Tech and the face Texas A&M in Arlington. Should they come out that undefeated that pits them at Alabama on Week 6 which returns only 3 starters on offense. My average rankings (offensive scoring + defensive scoring rankings divided by 2) show that the Razerbacks improved from an avg ranking of 96.5 in 2013 to 26 in 2014, an improvement of 70.5. Keep in mind that the lower the number the better the ranking. They did that despite facing the toughest schedule in 2014.

This year they face Steele’s #3 ranked toughest schedule and play at Tenn, Ala, Ole Miss and LSU.
On offense they return they top QB Allen, top 2 rushers (both over 100 yds) Williams and Collins, and their top 2 receivers Hatcher and Henry. They have some holes to fill on defense but they are now in the second year of DC Smith’s system.

We shall see but I don’t think any of it’s opponents are looking forward to facing the Razerbacks. By the same token the fervor has been rekindled under Bielema and I do not think the Razerbacks are afraid of any of their opponents at this point and time. The first 5 games are critical but I think 8 wins or better is within their grasp. If they were to beat Alabama then look out. BOL

Dan Enos was named Arkansas’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Jan. 22, 2015, after spending the previous five seasons as head coach at Central Michigan. He comes to The Hill with more than 20 years of experience coaching skill position players and over 10 years of play-calling experience, including all five years at Central Michigan.
Enos has tutored and developed many NFL stars, including offensive tackle Eric Fisher, who became the first Mid-American Conference player to be selected No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft in 2013 by the Kansas City Chiefs. Enos also coached standout quarterback Drew Stanton and running back Javon Ringer at Michigan State. He was named one of Rivals.com’s Top 25 recruiters in the nation in 2009.
Hired as Central Michigan’s head coach in 2010, Enos led the Chippewas to bowl eligibility in each of the past three seasons. CMU passed for over 3,000 yards in four of his five seasons as head coach.
Ryan Radcliff was Enos’ his first starting quarterback at Central Michigan. Under Enos’ tutelage, Radcliff became one of the best quarterbacks in CMU history as he passed for 9,917 yards and 63 touchdowns during his career. The signal-caller ranks second in school history in every major passing category.
Enos also helped develop wide receiver Titus Davis, who finished his career as one of the best wide outs in school history. He became the first player in FBS history to catch at least eight touchdown passes in each of his four collegiate seasons – all under Enos. Davis finished his career in 2014 as the school’s all-time leader in career receiving yards (3,705), career touchdown receptions (37) and single-season touchdown receptions (13).
The 2014 season saw Central Michigan lead the MAC and rank eighth nationally in time of possession, controlling the clock for an average of 33:24 per game. The Chippewas were also very efficient in the passing game, ranking third in the MAC and 18th nationally with a 149.55 passing efficiency rating. Quarterback Cooper Rush set an FBS bowl record with seven passing touchdowns in the Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl. Rush also passed for a school-record 493 yards in the contest.
In each of the past two seasons, Enos helped CMU rank in the top half of the MAC in passing efficiency, third down conversion percentage and time of possession.
The Chippewas had a memorable 2012 campaign under Enos, winning its third bowl game in school history. Senior wide receiver Cody Wilson finished his career with 42 consecutive games with a reception and junior running back Zurlon Tipton rushed for 1,492 yards, the fourth-best single-season mark in school history.
Prior to Central Michigan, Enos spent four seasons in a variety of offensive roles at Michigan State. He served as the Spartans’ running backs coach from 2007 to 2009 and coached quarterbacks in 2006.
At Michigan State, Enos was the position coach for three NFL running backs – Ringer, Edwin Baker and Jehuu Caulcrick. Ringer was selected in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. Baker was a seventh round draft pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2012 and Caulcrick played for the Buffalo Bills in 2010.
Ringer led the nation in carries (390), scoring (132 points) and touchdowns (22) and ranked fourth in rushing (125.9 yards per game) in 2008 and was named a consensus first-team All-American.
In 2006, Enos mentored Stanton, who earned team MVP honors after accounting for 2,252 total yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior. Following the season, Stanton was selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the NFL Draft.
Prior to that, Enos spent two years as quarterbacks coach at Cincinnati. In 2004, Enos helped senior Gino Guidugli finish his career as the school’s all-time leading passer with 11,453 career yards, including 2,633 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns as a senior.
Enos also spent time at North Dakota State (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks, 2003), Western Michigan (quarterbacks, 2000-02), Missouri State (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks, 1999), Southern Illinois (quarterbacks and wide receivers, 1997-98), Northern Michigan (offensive coordinator and offensive backs, 1996) and Lakeland College (offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and wide receivers, 1994-95). He served as a graduate assistant on Michigan State’s staff from 1991 to 1993.
A standout quarterback at Michigan State from 1987-90, Enos started two seasons and earned a 16-7-1 record (.688) as a starter, leading the Spartans to two bowl victories. He still ranks No. 13 in school history in passing yards (3,837) and completions (297). His .621 completion percentage still ranks fourth-best in Spartan history.
Enos graduated from Michigan State with a degree in business administration in 1991 and earned his master’s in sports administration in 2006. The Dearborn, Mich. native is married to his wife, Jane. The couple has two children, Lia and Alex.

Dan Enos is walking into a great situation as Arkansas' new offensive coordinator. He will have a third year starter at quarterback, two of the best running backs in the conference and maybe the best offensive line in the league. If he can find one or two playmakers at receiver to supplement what should be one of the best rushing attacks in the country...then he'll be in for one hell of a ride this season.

I can see California improving on their ATS record in 2015. In 2013 they went 2-9 ATS and in 2014 they went 7-5. With 17 returning starters including QB Jared Goff I can see this Sonny Dykes led team getting better and better. In 2014 their avg point differential was -1.5 ppg. They started out in last season’s opener as a 10 pt underdog to Northwestern on the road, a game which they won out right. Steele rates them at #10 in his returning starters ratings. I like Dykes style of offense and any improvement at all on the defensive side of the ball will make the Golden Bears a viable team to keep a close watch on in regards to winning again ATS. They play at Texas in week 3 and that will be the game that could define their season.

I'm curious to see what Dykes does this year. I think he's a very good coach, and I'm surprised they haven't shown more improvement.

Coach,

I like Cal's DC, but still waiting on any Dykes' team to field a defense that is not rated 120th or worse! No excuses this year.

What do college football players do between spring and fall practice?

Spring games are signaling the end of college football's first major offseason period. Fall camp doesn't start until August. Now what? Welcome All-SEC tight end Phil Lutzenkirchen to SB Nation to explain.

After spring ball ends in April or early May, most coaches around the country will give their players a break from the meetings, practices, and film study that occurred throughout the semester. Coaches realize that it is crucial for a student-athlete to have the time to study for exams, some of which can be cumulative over 30-plus chapters of a textbook. Most college coaches were former student-athletes themselves and realize the struggle of finals week.
All players are not just turned loose the rest of the semester, though. Most head coaches will have mandatory study hall hours, during which players will meet with their tutors. Academic advisors across the country will be working their tails off and hounding student-athletes over the course of finals week. Two- or three-hour meetings with the academic staff are required daily by most academic support staffs. It is a very stressful time for them as well. Luckily I maintained a decent GPA while in college, so I was allowed to study on my own. Being a genius has its rewards.
Even during finals week, most programs will require players to get a few workouts in per week during the rest of the semester. It is important that the players maintain the strength and conditioning that has been built up throughout the offseason so far.
This final stretch to finish up finals can either be stressful or relaxing, depending on where your grades stand going in. Players who are flunking classes going into finals are most likely to be seen at the library with multiple cans of Red Bull and chewing gum, pulling all-nighters. Everyone who went to college has been there. Conversely, if you kept your grades high, then you have a pretty relaxing finals week at the pool full of sun, bikinis, and cold ... Gatorade. This was usually my strategy, as I prefer ice-cold Gatorade over exams any day.

Once finals end and universities let out for summer break, players are awarded "summer" vacation. The length of your vacation time is determined by when exams ended and when summer classes start. At some schools, it is only seven to 10 days until players are expected to report for summer term. Other universities might not start summer term until the beginning of June, giving players two to three weeks off of school and football duties.
This vacation time allows players to go back home and get away from football and school. By the end of spring semester, every player is burnt out on school and football. If a player tells you otherwise, then he is a big, fat liar. The sliver of a break that players have before summer term starts back up is usually the longest break that they will get all year.
AT SOME SCHOOLS, SUMMER VACATION IS ONLY SEVEN TO 10 DAYS.
I would head up to my family's lake house in Hartwell, South Carolina with friends and family. Boats, Gatorade, and good people helped me get my mind away from the stress that being a student-athlete can bring. No, we do not get to travel abroad and backpack through Europe during our summers, but the average student doesn't get to score
touchdowns in front of 100,000 people in the Iron Bowl. Europe will be around for a while, but football careers will fade. Although college football players' "summer" vacations are short, I promise you that they are much appreciated and enjoyed.
In summer term, it's mandatory to take a minimum of six hours of classes in order to receive your scholarship check. I would try to take my hardest classes during summer, to have them out of the way when the season starts during the fall. Summer is a great time to get your GPA up, because six hours (two class credits) allow you to really focus on that particular course instead of juggling around five to six courses, like in a regular semester. My last summer, I took 18 hours so that I could graduate early. That was not the most fun.

Summer term was always one of my favorites, because it is not as much of a grind as the football regular season and the fall semester. Your only real football obligations are likely morning workouts and player-led seven-on-seven passing drills in the evenings. The early morning workouts are exhausting: pushing 300-pound sleds and running 100-yard sprints in the scalding heat and so on. During the summer it seems as though you just sweat all day while walking to class. The seven-on-sevens are not mandatory, but if someone does not show up, the senior class usually handles it (I'll leave it up to your own imagination as to how). Overall, summer term grants players a lot more free time to recover their bodies.
Summer term gives players a chance to interact with "normal" students as well. Classes are much smaller and more personal. Classmates can get to know us as something aside from just football players. Campus is much quieter, due to the lack of students taking summer courses. But in the afternoons, the local apartment pools still draw large crowds. The best part of summer is that weekends are free time. You can get a chance to do what you want, which most of the time is sleep in until the afternoon.
Coaches realize how important summer is, too. In the busy profession of college football, coaches rarely get a chance to take a family vacation. It is the rare time where coaches get a week or two to get away from campus and truly enjoy some family time.
The basic offseason calendar

  • December/January: Season ends
  • January, February: Winter conditioning, spring classes
  • March, April: Spring camp, finals
  • May-July: Summer workouts, summer classes
  • Early August: Fall camp, fall classes start
  • August-December/January: Season and fall semester

Coaches also realize that summer is a time to build, but not overwork, player bodies leading into fall camp. They expect their players to bust their tails, but they have to be smart about it, so that players are at their peak physical level leading into that first Saturday night in September.
The week leading up to the first official day of fall camp is usually a dead week for most college programs, due to summer finals and a need for overall rest. Depending on your finals schedule, a player might be able to get back to his hometown or take a quick trip somewhere. Most go home, though, because it is the last chance they will have to do so until the season ends.
It really is crucial for players to be able to enjoy and relax during the post-spring practice months before August. It is a great time to focus on school and workouts, without having to be on edge the whole semester. It gave me a chance to relax and get my mind right.
Because before you know it, it will be August. And then it's back to the grind, getting ready to kick off the season.
