No. 19 Notre Dame opens its season at the Joyce Center tonight when it hosts Northern Illinois.
Notre Dame was bolstered by the return of junior point guard Chris Thomas, who tested the waters of the NBA before opting to return to school, Thomas averaged 18.7 points and 6.9 assists last season.
The Fighting Irish are also counting on big things from center Torin Francis, who turned in a strong freshman season last year with an 11.1 scoring average to go with 8.4 rebounds per game.
Notre Dame must replace perimeter shooters Matt Carroll, who is with the Portland Trail Blazers and Dan Miller. Sophomore guard Chris Quinn and athletic forward Torrian Jones are set to replace them in the starting lineup.
The Irish are 80-18 in season openers with a 3-0 mark under Coach Mike Brey, who has led the team to the NCAA Tournament every year.
Northern Illinois (1-0) opened its season with an 83-76 victory over Eastern Illinois. P.J. Smith scored 25 points to lead the Huskies, who are one of the favorites to capture the Mid-American Conference crown.
