Whatever momentum the Detroit Tigers hoped they were building after catching fire against two likely American League playoff teams over a five-day span came to a crashing halt over the weekend in Baltimore. The Tigers attempt to shake off a miserable end to their last series when they open up a four-game, home-and-home interleague set against the Pirates on Monday with the first of two contests in Pittsburgh.
Detroit took two of three from both AL-leading Houston and the New York Yankees before beating the Orioles twice in Camden Yards to begin a four-game set. The Tigers' season high-tying four-game winning streak ended unceremoniously after surrendering three homers in Saturday's 5-2 setback and five more in Sunday's 12-3 defeat, leaving them six games behind Kansas City for the second wild-card spot and 8 1/2 games in back of Cleveland in the AL Central. Pittsburgh crawled within 4 1/2 games of first place in the National League Central with Sunday's 5-4 victory over San Diego, as newcomer Sean Rodriguez belted a walk-off solo homer in the 12th inning a day after being acquired from Atlanta. The Pirates recorded their 15th consecutive win when scoring at least four runs and first series victory in five tries.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (7-8, 5.35 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Trevor Williams (4-4, 4.47)
Zimmermann missed out on an opportunity to record his first shutout of the season on Wednesday due to a rain delay of more than three hours in New York but settled for the victory after allowing six hits across seven scoreless innings. The two-time All-Star has turned in three quality starts in four tries since the Midsummer Classic and has not walked a batter in any of those three efforts. Zimmermann notched his only win in three career starts versus the Pirates last season, tossing six scoreless frames in Pittsburgh on April 14.
Williams settled for his 10th no-decision in 16 starts this season Wednesday against Cincinnati after permitting two runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old Arizona State product has done a fine job keeping the ball in the park, however, yielding only two home runs in his last nine outings and nine overall this season. Williams, who did not factor in the decision in his first career interleague start earlier this year, is 1-0 with a 3.42 ERA in four turns since the All-Star break.
WALK-OFFS
1. Tigers OF Justin Upton went 0-for-4 on Sunday to snap three-game homer and seven-game hitting streaks, but his run-scoring groundout in the ninth inning gave him an RBI in six straight contests.
2. Pittsburgh is 13-6 in its last 19 games against AL Central teams.
3. Detroit SS Jose Iglesias was placed on the bereavement list Sunday.
PREDICTION: Pirates 4, Tigers 3
