Aug 20, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels look to build on a strong road trip and move a season-high five games over .500 on Monday when they begin a four-game series against the visiting Texas Rangers. Los Angeles has won nine of its last 11 to earn a virtual tie for the second American League wild card spot, while Texas sits close behind at 2 1/2 games behind the Angels and Minnesota.

Los Angeles capped a 7-2 road trip with Sunday’s 5-4 win over Baltimore as Cameron Maybin delivered a go-ahead pinch-hit single and Kole Calhoun homered for the third time in a week. The Angels homered 11 times in the weekend series against Baltimore, including two from Luis Valbuena, who has nine homers and 19 RBIs over his last 21 starts. Texas has won five of its last seven but was held scoreless until the ninth inning of Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. The Rangers received a scare when third baseman Joey Gallo collided with reliever Matt Bush in the eighth inning, and both were placed into the concussion protocol after the game. Second baseman Rougned Odor belted a two-run homer in the ninth and is batting .387 with three homers and seven RBIs over his last eight games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (8-1, 3.48 ERA) vs. Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (1-3, 3.63)

Hamels earned the victory over Detroit last Wednesday despite allowing four runs on eight hits with five walks in six innings. The 33-year-old native of San Diego has won his last four decisions and owns a 6-1 mark with a 2.93 ERA in nine starts since the beginning of July. Andrelton Simmons is 3-for-28 against Hamels, who is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in seven career starts against the Angels - including 1-0 with a 0.61 ERA in two outings this season.

Skaggs will be activated from the bereavement list to make his fourth start since returning from disabled list after missing 85 games with an oblique strain. The 26-year-old took the loss at Washington last Tuesday after tossing five innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Skaggs is 2-1 with a 5.46 ERA in six career starts against Texas and has struggled to contain Elvis Andrus, who is 6-for-12 with a home run against the Southern California native.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels are 39-27 against the Rangers since 2014.

2. Texas 3B Adrian Beltre has 3,022 career hits - one short of tying Hall-of-Famer Lou Brock for 25th place on the all-time list.

3. Angels RHP J.C. Ramirez (forearm) will undergo an MRI on Monday and is not expected to make his next scheduled start.

PREDICTION: Rangers 6, Angels 3

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (65-60) at San Francisco Giants (50-76)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 21 - 10:15 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Brewers at Giants
Gracenote
Aug 20, 2017

The Milwaukee Brewers have been red-hot as they continue their pursuit of a postseason spot, but they'll need to figure out a way to overcome their struggles at AT&T Park as they begin a three-game road series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. Milwaukee has won six of its last seven overall contests but has dropped 35 of its 55 games in San Francisco - including nine of the last 10.

The Brewers remained two games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central but gained ground in the wild-card race on Sunday, climbing within 2 1/2 of Arizona for the second spot with an 8-4 triumph at Colorado. Jesus Aguilar, who went homerless in 58 at-bats over the previous three seasons with Cleveland, recorded his second two-homer performance of 2017 in the victory, giving him three in his last two games and 14 on the year for Milwaukee. While the Brewers continue their nine-game road trip after taking two of three in Colorado, San Francisco resumes a seven-game homestand that began with a split of a four-game set against Philadelphia. The Giants outscored the Phillies 15-6 in winning the first two contests before dropping the next two, including a 5-2 setback on Sunday.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Zach Davies (14-6, 4.26 ERA) vs. Giants RH Chris Stratton (1-2, 4.91)

Davies is coming off a strong outing on Tuesday in which he allowed one run and six hits over 6 2/3 innings in a victory over Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old native of Washington has been superb on the road this season, posting a 7-0 record and 2.52 ERA in 12 outings. Davies, who has gone 2-0 while giving up one unearned run over 21 2/3 frames over his last three turns away from home, will be facing San Francisco for the first time.

Stratton will be making his fourth start of the season - and the fourth of his career - after posting his first win of 2017 on Aug. 13. The 26-year-old from Mississippi registered 10 strikeouts while scattering five hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings at Washington for his first major-league triumph as a starter. Stratton made a relief appearance against Milwaukee last season, giving up one hit and one walk over two scoreless frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers 2B Jonathan Villar is 11-for-27 with a pair of three-hit efforts over his last seven contests.

2. San Francisco C Buster Posey is riding a five-game hitting streak during which he has gone 8-for-19 while recording three two-hit performances.

3. Milwaukee RHP Corey Knebel fanned the only batter he faced Sunday for his 99th strikeout of the season, eclipsing the previous franchise record for a reliever set in 1991 by Julio Machado.

Seattle vs. Atlanta, 08/21/2017 19:35 EDT

Money Line: -104 Atlanta

Mike Foltynewicz is 5-2 with a 3.48 ERA at home this season, with the Braves winning seven of his nine starts at SunTrust Park. Atlanta is 10-3 in his last 13 starts overall. Seattle's Andrew Albers was excellent in his first start of the year, at home vs. Baltimore, but I'll bet against him in his first road outing in this ballpark I think he'll struggle. Back Atlanta here as your Monday comp.
