The Seattle Mariners are playing through a difficult four-city, 13-day road trip that brings them into Atlanta for a three-game series with the Braves starting Monday night. Despite Sunday’s 3-0 loss at Tampa Bay, the Mariners arrive in Atlanta 1 1/2 games out of the second American League wild-card spot, after winning two of three against the Rays to kick off the trip that includes three games each against the New York Yankees and Baltimore.
Designated hitter Nelson Cruz singled Sunday to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, batting .422 during that stretch with seven homers and 16 RBIs. The Mariners are in the midst of playing 21 away games in 28 contests, and are 21-10 on the road after starting the away portion of their schedule 8-20. Atlanta salvaged the finale of a three-game home series with Cincinnati on Sunday, winning 8-1 as catcher Tyler Flowers belted a grand slam. Second baseman Brandon Phillips finished the weekend 8-for-16 against the Reds and is 11 hits away from reaching the 2,000 career mark.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Andrew Albers (1-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (10-8, 4.75)
Albers, purchased from the Braves on Aug. 11 for cash considerations, made the most of his first major-league appearance of the season while holding Baltimore to one run over five innings to earn his first big-league victory since his rookie season in 2013. The 31-year-old struck out four and walked one against the Orioles, throwing 54 of his 77 pitches for strikes. Albers, who had made 17 appearances in the majors from 2013-2016 with Minnesota and Toronto, posted a 2.61 ERA in 26 games for Atlanta’s Triple-A affiliate while going 12-3.
Foltynewicz looks to recover from consecutive dreadful starts, in which he has allowed 14 runs on 16 hits with seven walks in six innings during losses to St. Louis and Colorado. Those two outings followed a 12-start stretch during which the 25-year-old posted a 3.58 ERA and went 7-1, as Atlanta won 10 of those starts. Foltynewicz is 5-2 with a 3.48 ERA and 47 strikeouts against 19 walks in nine home starts this season.
WALK-OFFS
1. Braves RF Nick Markakis hit his 30th double of the season Sunday, marking the eighth time in his career he reached 30.
2. Seattle 1B Yonder Alonso singled as a pinch hitter Sunday, extending his hitting streak to seven games (10-for-25 during the streak).
3. The Mariners are 21-11 in one-run games this season, the second-best record in those types of contests in franchise history (2001).
