(959) SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS VS (960) SAN DIEGO PADRES

Take: (959) SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

San Francisco has plenty of offensive punch, 11th in baseball in runs scored, 3rd in on base percentage. The Giants are 5-1 vs. National League West, 5-1 against a team with a losing record. Tim Hudson has been off for a while, with the 40-year-old veteran getting some rest in a crowded rotation. He has a winning road record and shut out the Padres in 6+ innings in his only meeting with them this season. San Diego is 20th in baseball in runs scored, dead last in on base percentage. San Diego has a losing home record and is stuck with Ian Kennedy (4.91 ERA, 4-9). Kennedy took the loss in his last start, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out two in 4.1 innings against the Rangers. Home runs doomed Kennedy yet again -- he gave up back-to-back homers to Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre in the fourth inning. Kennedy has given up multiple homers in six of his 16 outings this season (20 total) and has now taken the loss in each of his last four starts. His two strikeouts Friday matched a season low. Play San Francisco.

Bonus Play Monday

GIANTS (Hudson) @ PADRES (Kennedy)

Take: GIANTS -107

Tim Hudson returns from his latest DL stint tonight as the Giants open a series at Petco against the Padres. Ian Kennedy, who is one of several Padres supposedly available with the trade deadline nearing, will be throwing for the hosts.

Hudson is obviously not the pitcher he used to be. But the veteran righty should at least be fresh here and we’ve seen in the past that he’s usually pretty effective when reappearing after spending some time on the shelf. Hudson will get to face one of the less imposing lineups around and the Padres could be down another bat if Justin Upton’s pesky oblique keeps him in the dugout on Monday night.

Ian Kennedy has had a terrible time keeping the baseball in the ballpark. He’s allowing a disastrous 2.13 HR per nine innings and his HR/FB rate is an unsightly 20.8%. It’s really tough to win with those type of ratios. Kennedy owns a decent K rate, so he can still miss bats with some regularity. But his mistakes are getting absolutely crushed and he’s simply not a go with pitcher right now.

The Giants are also coming in hot as they once again dominated the Diamondbacks on the road. That’s the norm for the world champs, who remarkably have now won each of their last ten series at Chase.

The Padres have a little momentum of their own. They went into the break off a couple of wins at Texas and extended the winning streak to four with Friday and Saturday wins at home against the Rockies.

The number comparison between Hudson and Kennedy really doesn’t offer much either way, as it’s not like Hudson was pitching well before heading to the disabled list. But I’d still rather have the savvy veteran here as Kennedy appears to be really messed up and he’s also been plagued by horrible defensive support. The Giants are on a roll and I like their chances of maintaining that upward mobility with the series opening win tonight.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Atlanta Braves

Bonus Play Atlanta Braves

Brandon Beachy was a promising pitcher with superstar potential for the Braves just three seasons ago.
Now Beachy returns to face his former team coming off not one but two Tommy John surgeries. Beachy pitched for the first time in nearly two years nine days ago facing the Brewers at Dodger Stadium.
The results were not pretty.
The Dodgers lost 7-1. Beachy was hammered for three runs on five hits and three walks in just four innings.
Beachy was obviously rusty. But it's a huge leap of faith - especially now in just his second start - to believe Beachy is anywhere near what he once was in Atlanta.
The Braves have another highly promising talented pitcher in Matt Wisler. This will be his sixth big league start. He's 3-1 with a 3.10 ERA. Wisler has been very good at Turner Field going 2-0 with an 0.68 ERA in home outings versus the Mets and Nationals.
The Dodgers are far less intimidating when Clayton Kershaw and Zach Greinke aren't on the mound. (Editor's note: Long-time pro Stephen Nover has been blazing the past two weeks on his MLB plays going 10-3 on his last 13 regular-season premium baseball plays. Stephen has his Bookie Breaker going today in addition to this free selection.)

San Francisco Giants vs San Diego Padres

Monday MLB Bonus Play from Doc's Sports Take #960 San Diego Padres (-110) over San Francisco Giants (Monday, 10:10pm EST)

Things haven't gone well for the San Diego Padres this season. Nobody made more waves in the offseason than GM A.J. Preller did to try and improve his ballclub. But a lot of poor decisions set this team up to fail and now it's apparent to everyone. We've done well fading the Padres this season, but on Monday we see a rare opportunity to back the Friars against the San Francisco Giants. While Ian Kennedy isn't exactly having a banner year for San Diego, his skill set does play much better in Petco Park than anywhere else. Kennedy gives up a ton of fly balls, and a lot of fly balls go to die in the outfield in Petco. Giants' starter Tim Hudson is the complete opposite, as he's a groundball machine that gains no advantage pitching in a spacious ballpark. This will be Hudson's first start back after spending a couple of weeks on the disabled list with a shoulder issue, so don't' expect a max effort. He's certainly slowing down at the age of 40 and this should be his final season. The Giants have the better team overall, but it's not by a very wide margin. The Pads certainly aren't a good baseball team, but they have more talent than their 43-49 record indicates. This might be the time to buy low. We'll go with San Diego here as our Bonus Play selection.

Monday MLB Scouting Edge

1:35 pm Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels

Heaney Tries to Keep Angel Streak Alive (1st game of double header)

The Red Sox have been blanked by Angel pitching in the first 2 games of the series. Andrew Heaney will try to make it 3 straight for the 1st place Halos who are on a roll. The Angels have won 6 of their last 8 and overtook the Astros for 1st place in the AL West at the break. Andrew Heaney is one of the reasons why. Since coming up to the Angels Heaney has gone 3-0 with an overall era of just 1.32 and a whip of 0.84. Heaney’s era at home is 1.38 and 1.27 in his last 3. He has only given up 3 runs in 27 1/3 innings. Opponents have collected 19 hits, 4 of them bombs, in those 27 1/3. Heaney’s K/BB ration is 23/4. The Halos have won all 4 of Heaney’s starts, 2 at night and 2 during the day. Heaney has also registered a quality start in each of the 4 games he’s started and has allowed only 1 run or fewer in 3 of the 4 starts. The Red Sox are calling up Steven Wright, not that comedian Steven Wright, to face Heaney. Wright pitched well against the Angels in his only start.

Note: There is some confusion as to which game Heaney and Wright will go in this double header necessitated by the 1st rainout since 1988. At any rate, we also took the Angels and Hector Santiago as our Free Pick of the Day. We like the Angels in both.

4:05 pm Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies

Buchanan Back for Another Try as Phillies Go for 4th Straight

Two pitchers with horrible earned run averages will go at it in the City of Brotherly Love today. Matt Moore, 1-0 with an era of 7.07 and a whip of 1.93 will go for the Rays against David Buchanan and his record of 0-5 and an era of 7.58 and a whip of 1.85. The Phillies are going for their 4th straight win, something they haven’t done in 2 months. Despite Buchanan’s presence on the mound, the Phils are going against a team in shambles. The Rays have lost 5 of their last 6, 15 of their last 18, and 9 of their last 11 on the road. Moore, returning from an almost 2 year layoff from Tommy John surgery, actually won his last start but it wasn’t pretty. Moore gave up 3 runs and 5 hits to the Astros in 5 innings. Prior to that he allowed 8 runs and 15 hits in 2 starts and 9 innings of work. Buchanan was sent to the minors, an understandably so, when he started 0-5 for the Phils. In his last 2 starts before his demotion, he gave up 10 runs in 11 innings. However, in his first start back from the minors, Buchanan pitched 5 innings against the Giants and gave up only 1 run and 8 hits. Neither pitcher has faced the opponents.

5:40 pm Texas Rangers at Colorado Rockies

Rockies Take MLB’s Worst Interleague Record Home Looking for 5th Straight Victory

The Rockies are just 1-10 in Interleague play but have won 8 of their last 9 at home and carry high hopes into their interleague match-up with the Rangers. Colorado outscored Texas 29-10 while taking 3 of 4 last year from the Rangers. The Rockies have won 4 straight home games which is the longest home streak they have had since closing last season with 6 straight. The Rockies will hand the ball to Chris Rusin, 2-0, 3.98 era, in 3 home starts at Coors Field. Rusin is 2-3 with a 4.53 era overall this year. He’s given up just 5 runs in his last 18 1/3 innings and has a 2.45 era in his last 3 starts. Unfortunately, Rusin’s interleague mark pretty much fits in with the Colorado record. He is 0-1 with an era of 8.10 in 3 interleague starts. The Rangers counter with Nick Martinez who started out strong but was demoted to the minors after posting a 6.27 era in his last 3 games. Martinez has never faced the Rockies.

7:10 pm San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres

Hudson Will Try to Keep Tired Bullpen Rested – But It’s Not Likely

The Giants swept 2 three game series on either side of the All-Star break to keep the heat on the Dodgers. The SF crew just finished cleaning out the D-backs but they used up their bull pen in doing so. The Giant pen allowed only 1 run over the series, but pitched a total of 13 2/3 innings. They had to go 4 innings on Sunday. Unfortunately Giant starter Tim Hudson is just off the disabled list so the Giant pen will no doubt log even more innings. Hudson went on the DL with a strained right shoulder in late June after giving up 5 runs in 6 2/3 innings against Colorado. Hudson, 5-7, 4.68 era, has a 5.35 era on the road and isn’t expected to go more than 6 innings. Hudson has had success vs the Padres with a 7-4 record and a 2.92 era against the Friars. The good news is that reliever Jeremy Affeldt will come off the DL with Hudson for Monday’s game. Ian Kennedy, loser of 4 straight, tosses for the Padres.

10 Top Side Play · [968] Kansas City Royals
Chase Diamond Mon Jul 20th, 2015 8:10pm EDT

Expert Analysis: This game features two of the top teams in Baseball in the 53-38 Pirates at the 55-35 Royals. Pirates are off a rough 3 game sweep to the Brewers now have to go on the road to face a very good Royals team with their best pitcher on the mound in Yordano Ventura while he is just 4-6 with a 4.73 ERA this guy has electric stuff. 8-2 in their last 10 games and my guy says this will be his huge play today and we will be resting easy early again. Looking at the public they are about 50/50 on this game yet the line went from -120 to -137. Take the Royals for a big 10* winner today.

Dodgers RHP Greinke extends scoreless-inning streak

WASHINGTON -- What is it about scoreless inning streaks and the Los Angeles Dodgers?

Right-hander Zack Greinke threw eight scoreless innings on Sunday in a 5-0 win in Washington over the Nationals. That ran his scoreless streak to 43 2/3 innings.

He has not allowed a run in his last six starts. Since 1920, the only other pitchers do that were also with the Dodgers: Orel Hershiser in 1988 and Don Drysdale in 1968, years they both had long streaks of their own.

Cardinals' Wacha likely to make Tuesday start

ST. LOUIS -- After a wacky 3-1, 18-inning loss to the New York Mets on Sunday in Busch Stadium, St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny wouldn't commit to the idea of moving starter Michael Wacha up 24 hours to open an interleague series Tuesday night at the Chicago White Sox.

However, there doesn't appear to be a palatable Plan B. The scheduled starter, Carlos Martinez, worked the last four innings in relief Sunday and took the loss. No way he comes back to start on one day of rest.

What's more, Wacha hasn't pitched since July 8, so he is well-rested. And Monday's off day would allow the team to move Lance Lynn into the Wednesday night start on normal rest.

The team has worked to find ways to save innings for its young right-handers, Wacha and Lynn. It is why the Cardinals placed them fourth and fifth in the rotation after the All-Star break, giving them nearly two weeks between outings.

Diamondbacks need to replace injured starter Anderson

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks have used nine starting pitchers in their first 90 games, and it appears No. 10 will come soon.

Arizona placed right-hander Chase Anderson on the disabled list with right triceps inflammation Sunday, a day after he gave up 10 hits and seven runs in 3 2/3 innings, and will need another starter to face Milwaukee on Thursday, the seventh game in a stretch of 13 games in 13 days.

With right-hander Archie Bradley still on the disabled list and not close to returning, the D-backs likely will dip into the minor league system to fill the void. Triple-A Reno right-handers Aaron Blair and Jhoulys Chacin and Double-A right-hander A.J. Schugel appear to be the top candidates, although Reno right-hander Allen Webster could be an option. Blair, Chacin and Schugel haven't started for the D-backs this season.

Rays' hitters aren't doing their part

TORONTO -- The Tampa Bay Rays are built around strong and deep pitching.

However, it takes some hitting to take advantage of the opportunities the pitching creates, and the Rays do not bat well enough.

Right-hander Chris Archer pitched well enough to win Sunday. He allowed two runs in seven innings but took the loss as the Rays fell 4-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays.

It was the ninth time the Rays were shut out this season, tied for the most in the American League. Their total of 337 runs scored ranks 13th in the league.

In 35 games, they scored two or fewer runs.

Preview: Red Sox at Angels

GAME: Boston Red Sox (42-49) at Los Angeles Angels (50-40)
DATE/TIME: Monday, July 20 - 5:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Angels look to continue their dominant post-All Star break pitching when they host the Boston Red Sox in a split doubleheader Monday. The Angels blanked the Red Sox in the opening two contests of the series before suffering the first home rainout since 1995 on Sunday, and attempt to record their first three-game shutout streak in almost 41 years.

The Angels offense is due after managing only Mike Trout’s walk-off solo homer Friday and five hits in a 3-0 triumph Saturday while slugger Albert Pujols is 3-for-25 in his last six games. Boston averaged almost six runs in the nine games before the All-Star break, but has collected seven hits and is 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position combined in the series. Pablo Sandoval, who needs to get hot if the Red Sox are to climb back in the playoff race, had their only two hits Saturday. The Angels have won 13 of their last 16 contests to take a one-game lead over Houston in the American League West.

TV: 5:05 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (5-2, 3.59 ERA) vs. Angels LH Hector Santiago (6-4, 2.33)

Rodriguez is 2-0 in his last three starts, allowing a total of four runs over 17 1/3 innings in that span. The Venezuelan rookie surrendered two runs – a pair of solo homers – in a win over the New York Yankees on July 11 but has not completed seven frames since June 3. Rodriguez, who is making his first appearance against Los Angeles, is 3-0 with a 0.69 ERA in four career road starts.

Santiago was a late addition to the American League All-Star roster in place of Oakland’s Sonny Gray, earning the nod after surrendering a total of three runs in 27 innings over his last four starts. The 27-year-old struck out seven while scattering one run and eight hits over seven frames to win at Seattle on July 10. Santiago lost at Boston on May 24, when he allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, to fall to 0-3 in five career games against the Red Sox.

WALK-OFFS

1. Boston 1B Mike Napoli is 5-for-12 with four homers in four games against the Angels in 2015 and is a .322 hitter all time versus his former team.

2. Los Angeles RHP Huston Street is one shy of becoming the 27th player in major league history to reach 300 saves.

3. The Red Sox are 17-27 against their American League East rivals and 25-22 versus the rest of baseball.

PREDICTION: Angels 4, Red Sox 2

The Tampa Bay Rays hope that interleague play provides their struggling offense a boost when they visit the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday to start a three-game series. The Rays are 6-3 against the National League this season while batting .279 and averaging five runs – much better than their overall marks of .238 and 3.59 - after totaling five runs in losing two of three at Toronto.

The Rays managed only four hits in a 4-0 loss Sunday while the Phillies (32-62), who own the worst record in baseball, were finishing a three-game sweep of Miami with an 8-7 victory. Three-time All-Star Evan Longoria is 2-for-20 with five strikeouts in his last six games for Tampa Bay, which stands at the .500 mark (47-47). Matt Moore attempts to find his best form for the Rays in his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery and faces David Buchanan, who is winless in 2015. Jeff Francoeur belted two homers in the last series for the Phillies, including a walk-off blast Sunday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Matt Moore (1-0, 7.07 ERA) vs. Phillies RH David Buchanan (0-5, 7.59)

Moore limited Houston to three runs on five hits in five innings against Houston last time out to earn his first victory since Sept. 29, 2013. The 26-year-old, who has eight strikeouts and seven walks overall in 2015, gave up eight runs and 15 hits in nine innings combined over his first two starts since April 2014. Francoeur is 2-for-5 versus Moore, who meets the Phillies for the first time and is 2-0 with a 3.91 ERA in four career interleague starts.

Buchanan makes his seventh start of 2015 and is coming off his best this season, yielding one run and eight hits over five innings in a no-decision at San Francisco on July 11. The 26-year-old Atlanta native allowed 24 runs over 24 2/3 innings in five April starts before being demoted to Triple-A. Buchanan, who faces the Rays for the first time, permitted six runs over three innings against Boston in his only interleague start this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Rays have won four of six meetings since losing to the Phillies in five games in the 2008 World Series.

2. Philadelphia 1B Ryan Howard is 8-for-22 during a six-game hitting streak and boasts at least one RBI in five consecutive contests.

3. Tampa Bay RF Steven Souza Jr. (finger), the team’s leader in homers with 15, could return from the disabled list as early as Tuesday.

Preview: Mets at Nationals

GAME: New York Mets (48-44) at Washington Nationals (49-41)
DATE/TIME: Monday, July 20 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Mets turn to ace Matt Harvey on Monday night as they continue their brutal post-All-Star break schedule with a three-game series at the National League East-leading Washington Nationals. The Mets, in the midst of playing three straight division leaders, are two games back of Washington after avoiding a three-game sweep by squeezing out a 3-1 victory in 18 innings at St. Louis on Sunday.

Harvey owns a pair of wins over the Nationals this season, working 13 scoreless innings to improve to 3-1 with a microscopic 0.68 ERA in six career starts against Washington. New York could use a similar-type outing from Harvey after it was forced to use six relievers for a total of 10 1/3 innings in Sunday's victory. The Nationals lost two of three over the weekend to the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, going down meekly in the last two games against aces Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. Washington is 4-3 against the Mets this season, winning the last two games by identical 1-0 scores on May 2-3.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Matt Harvey (8-6, 3.07 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (6-4, 3.99)

Harvey ended a three-start drought in his final outing before the break, striking out nine and limiting Arizona to two runs and five hits over seven strong innings. One concern of late for Harvey is a lack of control - he walked nine batters over his past two turns after allowing a total of 17 in his first 15 starts. Harvey has dominated Nationals slugger Bryce Harper, holding him hitless with six strikeouts in 12 at-bats.

Gonzalez closed the first half on a high note, going 2-0 while permitting two runs - both solo homers - and 15 hits in 20 innings over his last three outings. The 29-year-old had one of his best outings against the Mets on May 2, striking out a season-high nine over seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory. He is 8-4 with a 2.87 ERA against New York and has held Curtis Granderson, Lucas Duda and Wilmer Flores to a combined 6-for-51.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Mets tied a franchise record by stranding 25 runners Sunday and are 3-for-62 with runners in scoring position over the past eight games.

2. Nationals 3B Yunel Escobar is 12-for-28 over his last seven games.

3. Mets LF Michael Cuddyer, 9-for-21 over his last six games, had to leave Sunday's game due to an ailing knee and could be shut down by the team.

Preview: Mariners at Tigers

GAME: Seattle Mariners (42-50) at Detroit Tigers (45-46)
DATE/TIME: Monday, July 20 - 7:08 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Detroit Tigers are sitting in unfamiliar territory as they prepare to host the struggling Seattle Mariners on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series. Sunday's 9-3 loss to Baltimore dropped the Tigers under .500 for the first time since the third game of the 2013 season and gave them their first losing record after the All-Star break since the final day of the 2010 campaign.

Detroit has won four consecutive American League Central titles but is 10 1/2 games behind division-leading Kansas City - its biggest deficit since last failing to make the postseason in 2010. "No one in this clubhouse is happy," said Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos, who exited Sunday's game due to cheekbone and finger injuries. "We know we're not playing the way we should play." The Mariners dropped the rubber match of a three-game set at the New York Yankees on Sunday and haven't posted back-to-back victories since June 30-July 1. Seattle lost two of three at home to Detroit earlier this month - a series in which the teams combined for 39 runs.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH J.A. Happ (4-5, 4.14 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Alfredo Simon (8-6, 4.53)

Happ faced the Tigers in his last start before the All-Star break and turned in a lackluster performance, giving up four runs on seven his over four-plus innings in a no-decision. Happ has only one victory in his last 11 appearances, holding Oakland to three runs in six innings on July 3 to snap a four-start losing streak. Rookie Jefry Marte went 2-for-2 with his first career homer off Happ, who is 1-0 with a 3.66 ERA versus Detroit.

Few pitchers needed the break more than Simon, who was battered repeatedly over his last five starts to the tune of 30 runs and 47 hits allowed. The 34-year-old Dominican lasted a season-low 2 1/3 innings at Minnesota on July 11 and was pulverized for seven runs on 10 hits - his fifth straight start with at least five runs permitted. Simon did win at Seattle on July 6 despite yielding five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Castellanos, who was 6-for-13 with two homers and eight RBIs versus Seattle two weeks ago, is day-to-day with a hyperextended finger and bruised cheekbone.

2. Mariners 3B Kyle Seager is riding a nine-game hitting streak.

3. Tigers DH Victor Martinez was 8-for-13 in the last series against the Mariners.

PREDICTION: Tigers 5, Mariners 3
