Preview: Red Sox at Rays

GAME: Boston Red Sox (41-34) at Tampa Bay Rays (31-43)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 27 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Tampa Bay Rays were hanging around the edge of the .500 mark and threatening to get back into the race in the American League East two weeks ago, but have since fallen off a cliff. The Rays will try to snap an 11-game slide when they host the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

Tampa Bay beat Seattle in 13 innings to improve to 31-32 on June 15 but were outscored 72-29 over the next 11 contests, including 31 runs allowed in four games at Baltimore over the weekend. "Losing is tough," Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters. "There's no doubt about it. You find out a little bit about each other. You find out about your club. Nobody's character is going away. We're staying positive. I like the way the guys keep going out there and grinding it out. We're playing hard.” The Red Sox were sitting atop the AL East a month ago but are 9-14 in June after dropping series against the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers. The Rangers had no problem knocking around Boston’s best starting pitchers – David Price and Steven Wright – and the Red Sox are searching for answers in the rotation.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2, 6.41 ERA) vs. Rays LH Blake Snell (0-2, 2.40)

Boston was counting on Rodriguez to be one of its strongest starting pitchers, but the Venezuela native is having a hard time finding a groove after missing the first two months with a knee injury. The 23-year-old recorded a season-high seven strikeouts against Chicago on Wednesday and managed to finish six innings for the first time since his season debut but could not find his way into the win column. Rodriguez faced Tampa Bay twice in his 2015 rookie campaign and allowed a total of six runs on 12 hits and six walks in 11 innings.

Snell provided the Rays one of the few bright spots in the last 11 games when he held Cleveland to three runs – two earned – on seven hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings on Tuesday. The top prospect is making his fourth career start on Monday and has allowed a total of four earned runs over 15 innings. Snell is seeing Boston for the first time and lost his only previous home start while surrendering five runs – one earned – and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings against Seattle on June 16.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Rays took two of three from the Red Sox at Fenway Park from April 19-21 in the first meeting between the division rivals.

2. Tampa Bay SS Brad Miller went 6-for-10 with three runs scored in the last two contests.

3. Boston RF Mookie Betts is 9-for-25 in his last five games.

Preview: Indians at Braves

GAME: Cleveland Indians (44-30) at Atlanta Braves (26-49)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 27 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cleveland Indians are the hottest team in baseball with wins in nine straight games and have started to pull away from the pack in the American League Central. The Indians will try to make it 10 in a row when they visit one of the worst teams in the majors for the start of a three-game interleague series against the Atlanta Braves on Monday.

Cleveland pounded out 22 runs in a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers to begin a 10-game road trip and is averaging 6.7 runs during the winning streak. Juan Uribe, Tyler Naquin, Mike Napoli and Lonnie Chisenhall each homered off Justin Verlander in the fifth inning of Sunday’s 9-3 triumph while Josh Tomlin continued the strong run for the starting pitchers with eight solid innings. The Braves still own the worst record in the National League at 26-49 but are playing better of late with wins in eight of their last 11 games. Atlanta battled the New York Mets over the weekend and took the finale 5-2 to earn a four-game split after falling 1-0 in 11 innings on Saturday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Trevor Bauer (5-2, 3.20 ERA) vs. Braves RH John Gant (1-2, 4.45)

Bauer is riding the wave straight up with the rest of his teammates and has posted six consecutive quality starts. The UCLA product put together his best effort against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, when he scattered one run and three hits over nine innings while striking out 10. Bauer surrendered a total of five earned runs in 31 2/3 innings in his last four starts with 32 strikeouts and six walks in that span.

Gant is making his fourth straight start since entering the rotation and kept the Braves in the game in each of the first three. The 23-year-old earned his first win against the New York Mets on June 17 but could not make it two in a row as he was reached for three runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss at Miami on Wednesday. Gant is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA in four career home games – one start.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians SS Francisco Lindor is 5-for-9 with two home runs and four runs scored in the last two games.

2. Atlanta RF Nick Markakis is 8-for-17 with four doubles in the last four games.

3. Chisenhall went 4-for-4 on Sunday and recorded multiple hits in three of the last five games.

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (41-36) at Colorado Rockies (36-39)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 27 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Troy Tulowitzki returns to the familiar surroundings of Coors Field on Monday as the veteran shortstop leads the Toronto Blue Jays into the opener of a three-game interleague series versus the Colorado Rockies. The 31-year-old Tulowitzki, who played in parts of 10 seasons with the Rockies, joined veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins in being shipped to Toronto in a late-night, blockbuster deal 11 months ago for Jose Reyes and a trio of right-handed pitching prospects.

"Obviously, mixed emotions," Tulowitzki told MLB.com of returning to Coors Field, where he batted .321 and belted 106 homers. "(I'm) excited to play in front of the fans again. It's been a lot of years there, so to kind of give back to them and get a chance to see the field again, (see) some friends on the team, some coaches (will be fun)." Tulowitzki hasn't been having much fun of late with Toronto dropping five of its last seven, even though he belted a solo homer in Sunday's 5-2 setback to the Chicago White Sox. Mark Reynolds also went deep with a walk-off, two-run shot in the ninth inning on Sunday as Colorado salvaged a split of its four-game series against Arizona with a 9-7 victory.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (5-3, 2.70 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jon Gray (4-3, 4.80)

Estrada recorded his 11th consecutive start of six-plus innings with five or fewer hits allowed in each contest on Tuesday, although it came as he suffered his first loss since April 27. The 32-year-old allowed three runs on two hits versus Arizona to spoil his second eight-strikeout performance in three outings. Estrada picked up the win in his last encounter with Colorado as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2014, although he yielded seven runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings in the process.

Gray suffered from right arm fatigue in his last start on Wednesday, permitting four runs and five walks in four innings of a no-decision against the New York Yankees. The 24-year-old declared himself ready to go after completing a short bullpen session without issue. Gray, who has been taken deep seven times in his last six outings, has found success pitching at Coors Field with a 2-0 mark this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado RF Carlos Gonzalez is 24-for-61 with eight doubles, three homers, 13 RBIs and 10 runs scored in his last 15 contests.

2. Toronto 3B Josh Donaldson has hit safely in five straight games and 16of his last 17.

3. The Rockies are 3-3 in their last six games despite erupting for 51 runs in that span.

Preview: Cubs at Reds

GAME: Chicago Cubs (48-26) at Cincinnati Reds (29-47)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 27 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs may be providing a glimmer of hope to the National League after being unable to continue their best start to a season in over 100 years, but hope is about the only thing the Cincinnati Reds have had in their corner against their division rivals this campaign. Jake Arrieta will try to extend his team's recent mastery in this series Monday, when Chicago travels to Cincinnati for the opener of a three-game set.

Arrieta fired his second career no-hitter on April 21 in a 16-0 thrashing of the Reds as the Cubs won six of the seven meetings between the clubs that month during their 25-6 start, matching the club's best run to begin a season since the 1907 team won the first of back-to-back World Series titles. The Cubs have cooled off significantly since then (23-20), losing six of their last seven games, and even Arrieta has split his last four turns after capturing 20 decisions in a row. Although he has struggled to maintain his lofty standards recently, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner has been otherworldly at night, going 14-0 with a 0.51 ERA in 17 outings under the lights since July 19. Cincinnati, which has been outscored by Chicago 60-20 this season, ended a four-game losing streak with Sunday's 3-0 home win against San Diego, and tries its luck in the opener with Dan Straily, who got the start in the Reds' only win over the Cubs in 2016 - a 13-5 rout two days after Arrieta's no-hitter.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (11-2, 1.74 ERA) vs. Reds RH Dan Straily (4-4, 3.83)

Arrieta continued to struggle with his command in Wednesday's setback against St. Louis, taking the loss despite yielding two runs - one earned - on four hits and a season high-tying four walks over five frames. The outing marked the fifth time in his last 12 turns the former fifth-round draft pick has walked four following a season in which he only did so once in 33 outings. Including his no-hitter just over two months ago, Arrieta is 4-2 with a 2.81 ERA in six career starts against the Reds.

Straily faced the minimum in five of his six frames Wednesday but gave up all four of the runs he allowed in the contest on two hits, two walks and hit batsman during the fourth inning of his loss at Texas. While the 27-year-old Marshall product fell to 2-4 with a 5.22 ERA on the road, he is 2-0, 2.60 in eight games (seven starts) at home. Straily made his second start of the season against the Cubs on April 23, yielding three runs on four hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is only 4-for-27 against the Reds this season, but all four of his hits are home runs and all of his eight RBIs versus Cincinnati have come at Great American Ball Park.

2. Reds RF Jay Bruce, who ranks second in the NL with 58 RBIs, has knocked in only one run in his last eight games against the Cubs dating back to last season.

3. Chicago 3B Kris Bryant is 8-for-19 at Cincinnati in 2016 and 11-for-29 with four home runs and 11 RBIs against the Reds overall this season.

Preview: Cardinals at Royals

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (39-35) at Kansas City Royals (39-35)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 27 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Despite competing in opposite leagues, the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals have much more in common than meets the eye, including an identical record and some surprising pitching problems. The Royals put their major league-best home record on the line Monday as they open a four-game, home-and-home interleague set against one of the majors' top road clubs in the Cardinals in the latest edition of the I-70 Series.

Kansas City (39-35) had won 12 of 13 at Kauffman Stadium prior to dropping consecutive home games for the first time this season over the weekend, but it avoided a sweep against Houston with a 6-1 victory on Sunday to improve to 26-10 in its own ballpark. Ian Kennedy's seven strong innings were a breath of fresh air to a bullpen that had worked 11 more frames (29) than the starters (18) over the previous five games, although he was unable to prevent a Royals' opponent from homering for the 13th straight contest. Keeping the ball in the park will be a priority against St. Louis, which recorded 13 extra-base hits - including six home runs - in Sunday's 11-6 triumph that helped avoid a sweep in Seattle. The Cardinals, who boast the majors' second-best road record at 24-14, have their own pitching problems to deal with, however, as they removed Trevor Rosenthal from the closer's role after he went 0-2 with a 14.14 ERA over his first 11 appearances this month.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (6-4, 4.73 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (2-1, 3.38)

Wainwright registered his first victory in June on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs, permitting three runs on six hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings to improve to 4-2 with a 5.74 ERA on the road. The three-time All-Star has posted a 2.36 ERA in four outings this month, however, and has worked at least six frames in each of his last seven turns - giving up three runs or fewer six times. Wainwright has fared well in 10 appearances (seven starts) versus the Royals, going 4-1 with a 3.07 ERA.

Duffy labored through one of his most inefficient outings and did not factor in the decision of Wednesday's loss to the New York Mets, as he needed a season-high 103 pitches to get through 4 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old, who has walked nine over his last three turns after going four straight without issuing a free pass, allowed three runs on four hits and four walks but struck out eight. Duffy yielded one hit over six scoreless frames in his last start versus the Cardinals in 2014 and has permitted two runs over 9 2/3 career innings against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Royals have surrendered a major league-high 46 home runs in June, five shy of the team record in any month.

2. St. Louis 2B/3B Matt Carpenter, who hit two of his team's homers on Sunday, has reached base safely in 18 straight games.

3. Kansas City rookie 2B Whit Merrifield has recorded 45 hits in his first 33 big-league games - the most since Yasiel Puig recorded 54 in his first 33 contests in 2012 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Preview: Phillies at Diamondbacks

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (32-45) at Arizona Diamondbacks (36-42)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 27 - 9:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After beginning their recent road trip by thrashing the Philadelphia Phillies, the Arizona Diamondbacks look to start a nine-game homestand in much the same manner as the clubs play the opener of their three-game set on Monday. Arizona outscored Philadelphia by a lopsided 22-5 margin during a four-game sweep at Citizens Bank Park on June 17-20 and wrapped up a 7-3 road trip with a 9-7 setback at Colorado on Sunday.

Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb each belted a pair of homers against the Phillies to ignite productive road trips, as the former is 16-for-37 with nine RBIs in his last nine games while the latter is 15-for-36 with 11 runs driven in during a 10-game stretch. Philadelphia's pitching has been extremely generous with the team surrendering a staggering 121 runs in their last 18 games (3-15). Odubel Herrera homered among his two hits in Sunday's 8-7 setback to San Francisco and also went deep in a 4-1 loss to Arizona on June 18. Peter Bourjos recorded the second three-hit performance of his six-game hitting streak in the series finale versus the Giants but was 1-for-3 in limited duty against the Diamondbacks.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (5-2, 3.65 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (4-6, 4.59)

Velasquez will return to the mound after missing 2 1/2 weeks with a strained right biceps. The 24-year-old pitched well in his lone rehab start with Double-A Reading on Wednesday, overcoming a lead-off homer to yield just one more hit in five innings. Velasquez, who is expected to replace Adam Morgan in the rotation, has yet to record a decision versus Arizona despite making two relief appearances.

Ray saw his modest two-game winning streak come to a halt on Wednesday as he permitted four runs on as many hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 5-2 setback at Toronto. The 24-year-old would love a repeat performance of his first outing versus Philadelphia, against which he allowed two runs and struck out seven in a 10-2 rout on June 17. Ray kept the ball in the park in that contest before being he was taken deep twice versus the Blue Jays.

WALK-OFFS

1. Arizona 2B Jean Segura has scored 11 times in the last seven games.

2. The Diamondbacks are 9-4 against the National League East while the Phillies own a 4-7 record versus the NL West.

3. Arizona is a woeful 13-25 at home this season, a mark that is only better than Atlanta's 11-29 record.

Preview: Astros at Angels

GAME: Houston Astros (39-37) at Los Angeles Angels (32-44)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 27 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Their seven-game winning streak is over, but the Houston Astros will try to extend another run when they open a three-game series at the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. The Astros have won five straight - all by three runs or fewer - against their American League West foes, sweeping three straight from the Angels at home last week.

That was part of Houston's seven-game surge, which came to an end with Sunday's 6-1 loss at Kansas City. After pounding the Royals for 13 runs in consecutive wins to begin the set, the Astros were limited to four hits in seeing their four-game road winning streak come to an end. The Angels were headed in the other direction with six consecutive defeats but they also ended their streak on Sunday with a 7-6 win over Oakland, scoring five runs over the final three innings to steal the victory. Los Angeles All-Star Mike Trout went 3-for-5 with a home run for the second straight contest Sunday, but he was just 2-for-11 with one RBI in the series at Houston last week.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, ROOT (Houston), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Collin McHugh (5-5, 4.70 ERA) vs. Angels RH Matt Shoemaker (3-8, 4.43)

McHugh stymied the Angels on Tuesday at home by allowing two runs in seven innings while striking out six. He has given up three runs in 13 2/3 frames over his last two outings after struggling in his previous two starts. Angels designated hitter Albert Pujols is 6-for-17 with a homer against the 29-year-old McHugh, who is 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA in eight career starts against Los Angeles.

Shoemaker has six quality starts in his last seven outings after limiting the Astros to three runs in 7 1/3 innings of a tough-luck loss on Wednesday. The Michigan native has let up five runs and 15 hits while striking out 18 in 15 2/3 frames versus Houston in 2016. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve is 6-for-14 with a pair of homers against Shoemaker.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston has homered in 11 straight games, its longest such run since 2007.

2. Angels 3B Yunel Escobar (knee) has missed the last three contests.

3. Altuve has reached base safely in a career high-tying 29 straight games.

Preview: Athletics at Giants

GAME: Oakland Athletics (32-43) at San Francisco Giants (49-28)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 27 - 10:15 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After taking three of four from the Los Angeles Angels to begin their road trip, the Oakland Athletics wrap it up against one of the hottest teams in baseball as they begin a four-game, home-and-home series against the Giants in San Francisco on Monday. Oakland was in line to sweep the Angels as it held a four-run lead after six innings before surrendering five over the final three frames for a 7-6 defeat.

Coco Crisp hopes to continue providing offense after going 5-for-13 with a grand slam, six RBIs and six runs scored in the series versus Los Angeles. San Francisco has won 14 of its last 17 contests - including the rubber match of its three-game set against visiting Philadelphia on Sunday, when it pounded out 16 hits in an 8-7 walk-off victory. Angel Pagan went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to extend his hitting streak to seven games while Conor Gillaspie drove in two runs, including the winner with a one-out double. The National League West-leading Giants have won seven of their last eight at AT&T Park and trail the Chicago Cubs (25) by one for the most home victories in the NL.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), NBC Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Daniel Mengden (0-3, 3.00 ERA) vs. Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (8-4, 3.59)

Mengden is coming off his third loss in as many major-league starts, a setback against Milwaukee on Wednesday in which he yielded three runs and seven hits while recording a career-best nine strikeouts in six innings. The 23-year-old native of Houston gave up only two runs in each of his first two outings but has served up a home run in each of his three turns. Mengden has harnessed his control, walking a total of two batters over 12 1/3 frames in his last two starts after issuing four free passes in his debut at Cincinnati on June 11.

Samardzija escaped with a no-decision at Pittsburgh on Wednesday after being tagged for six runs and six hits - three homers - in only three innings. It was the third time in the last five outings the 31-year-old from Indiana surrendered at least five runs but followed a complete-game gem at Tampa Bay in which he gave up just one run and four hits. Samardzija, who made 16 starts for Oakland as a rental in 2014, has split his two career turns against his former club despite yielding 13 runs and 19 hits in 11 frames (10.64 ERA).

WALK-OFFS

1. Each team has won seven games in the Bay Bridge Series since 2013.

2. Oakland's Marcus Semien leads all American League shortstops with 14 home runs.

3. San Francisco RHP Matt Cain (hamstring) threw off a mound Sunday and could begin a rehab assignment on Friday.
