Faced with big expectations entering the season, the Seattle Mariners have underwhelmed so far.
They're hoping back-to-back wins helps lead to bigger things.
Seattle seeks its first three-game winning streak of the season Monday night when it hosts the first-place Houston Astros.
The Mariners (5-7) have followed a four-game losing streak with consecutive wins over Texas, pounding out 17 hits to win 11-10 Sunday after Felix Hernandez struck out 12 in Saturday's 3-1 victory.
Seattle scored six runs over the final three innings to rally Sunday, capped by Nelson Cruz's walkoff single.
"This team is a very gritty bunch. They're built for this. They're tough. Character-wise they're tough,' Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. " ... This team is built for greatness."
Cruz also homered twice, pushing his major league-leading total to eight and becoming the first player with eight home runs in a team's first 12 games since Alex Rodriguez in 2007. He's hitting .485 during an eight-game hitting streak, recording all 14 of his RBIs in that span. He has six homers and 14 RBIs in his last 12 against the Astros.
Robinson Cano is also heating up, going 11 for 25 during a six-game hitting streak after batting .120 through his first six games. He has hit .389 with eight RBIs in his last nine meetings with Houston.
Seattle's lineup will look to take advantage of facing Asher Wojciechowski (0-1, 4.50 ERA) in his second career start. Wojciechowski was called up again from Triple-A Fresno after Brad Peacock went on the disabled list with a left intercostal strain. He struggled in his first outing against Cleveland on April 9, giving up four runs and eight hits - including two homers - in four-plus innings of a 5-1 loss. The right-hander was better in long-relief duty last Monday, however, giving up two hits over four scoreless innings of Houston's 8-1 loss to Oakland.
The Astros (6-6) took over sole possession of first place with Sunday's 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels. This is the latest they've led a division since they were atop the NL Central with a 15-9 record in 2007.
"This is a resilient club that loves to play," manager A.J. Hinch told MLB's official website. "We've talked in here a lot about the first couple of weeks of being results-oriented and I think this group in here, they care about doing it the right way, they care about each other, they focus on the process and don't get too high or too low."
Luis Valbuena hit his third homer Sunday and Jose Altuve had three hits to improve to 15 for 39 during a nine-game hitting streak, but Houston could use more offense. The Astros are averaging 2.8 runs and are 0-4 when giving up more than four. They left 10 runners on base and were 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position Sunday and are hitting a major league-worst .143 in those situations.
Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma (0-1, 6.55) has had a rough go through two outings, giving up nine runs and three homers in 11 innings against the two Los Angeles teams. The righty was 2-3 with a 5.40 ERA in five starts versus Houston last year and 13-6 with a 3.17 ERA against everyone else.
Altuve is 10 for 25 against him with three doubles.
Houston won four of the final five 2014 meetings to take a 24-23 lead in the all-time series.
