a couple midweek matches...

RBNY vs Real Salt Lake

- I think the Red Bulls learned a lot last week. Not only did they win for the first time in 2.5 months but they did it without key players (Henry/Marquez), with defense, and against a top team in the league on the road. While this gives them some much needed confidence I think it, most importantly, shows them what they can do when the defend at all costs and don't get caught up in pleasing a home crowd. As RSL dismantled them 3-0 last month I believe they'll be playing a defense-first system again tonight. The Red Bulls couldn only muster up 2 SOG and 1 corner against Dallas and RSL's road defense is outstanding. RSL have the lowest average # of road goals in MLS as their games are playing just 1.75 gpg away from Rio Tinto. The Red Bulls are mainly an over side at home but with a more ball control attack I think they'll worry more about limiting RSL's chances than getting their own. If RBNY go for 3 points and not style points I see a low scoring game here...if they resort back to their "old ways" then I see a high scoring draw or away win. I'll bet small on the former

RBNY/RSL under 2.5 2u -117

DC United vs Chivas USA

- CUSA in must-win situation as they've lost 4 straight and directly trail DC after getting beaten by them 3-0 in LA. They were shutout in 3 straight games before hitting for 2 goals in Chicago and it's really been feast or famine for them in road games. They've gotten clean sheeted, yes, but they've also scored a league-leading TWENTY times on the road! Break it down further and you'll see that against the very weak Eastern conference they've done well on the road scoring 2-3-1-2-1-3-3-1 this year. So in 8 road trips to Eastern conference teams they've yet to be shut out and have scored 16 goals (2 per game!). DC a very talented team going forward but no defense at all. They shutout bottom club, Vancouver, here last game for their first clean sheet since May at home. In between those, they had allowed 13 home goals in 6 matches. Offensively they've been very good scoring 14 times in the past 7 games at home (again, 2 gpg!). DC lead the MLS with 3.33 gpg at home while Chivas USA are just a shade under 3 gpg on the road but with a massive 4.13 gpg on the road against Eastern conference clubs this year.

Sporting KC vs Philadelphia
- The Union have posted b2b shutouts but I still believe they have major holes in their defense that were masked by two teams, Columbus and Portland, that can't score on the road. In the previous 4 games the Union had allowed 4-2-2-2 and hadn't posted a shutout since mid July. They'll be tested big-time tonight as KC have the 2nd best offense in the east and 2nd best home offense in the east in their 4-3-3 system. KC are unbeaten at home against Eastern conference teams, 3-2-0, and their recent down stretch, 1-1-2, can be attributed to playing superior Western teams. Philly with some serious issues as starting RFB, Williams, is out tonight. Regular keeper, Mondragon, is still hurt and 2nd keeper, Holder, is out with a concussion which means 3rd keeper, Zac MacMath, gets the start. No doubt the Union had a big win last week over Columbus but that stopped an 8-match winless streak which should pick up again tonight. SKC should give the new keeper a lot of work and I like a narrow home win.

RBNY vs Portland
- a play against RBNY. They're a disaster. Marquez suspended by coach tonight for his ridiculous comments about the league...ridiculous, because if the league sucks he should be dominating it and he's basically average. Nothing the Red Bulls have done lately would make me think they win by 2+. Portland terrible on road but unbeaten in 5. Public on RBNY, like normal, but without reason

Columbus vs LA Galaxy
- lineups just out and LA with 2nd team, Cbus with crazy injuries. Basically like a reserves match. Cbus defense intact though and LA best defensive team in MLS so going with under

Chicago Fire vs NE Revolution
- two teams with little shot at playoffs but both have played much better lately, especially on offense. All comments made today by the Revs coach suggests that they'll not be playing conservatively at all. "We need to go and try and win the game....We have to go for broke....I don't think we're going to be out there, playing conservatively for the tie...we have to go forward with everything we've got....We have to score goals". Scoring goals is something the Fire have done a lot of at home with consecutive 3-2-2-2 home goals scored and not being shutout here in over 2 months. In fact, except for a 2-0 road loss in SJ they've netted in every match, home or away, for 2 months. The Revs were clean sheeted in Portland last week which broke a solid 9 match scoring streak they had going overall, and a very impressive 8 straight games scoring away. Defensively they are terrible and have allowed 10 in last 3 road games with just 1 road clean sheet in past 28 games. Should be some goals in this one as NE road games avg over 3 gpg on season.
