Colorado vs San Jose
- The 7th and 8th placed teams in playoffs will play for berth in MLS final which is ridiculous, as always, but on to the bet. This year marks the first time the league plays a single semifinal versus 2 leg affair so no history to review. What I expect is that we have two teams that are probably shocked to be in this position and will play extremely conservative knowing that one mistake can mean the end of their dream season. The match is in altitude which can certainly slow things down but statistically this won't be a great bet, just something I have a gut feeling on. Let me get the stats out of the way: SJ road games avg 2.40, Colorado home games 2.46. Colorado allowed 101 less shots this season and took 25 more so significant edges there. Really the only stats that support my under bet is the h2h which is significantly skewed to unders. These two have played 7 straight unders and 10 of 11 meetings have ended with either 1 or 2 goals scored. San Jose remarkable success in Denver which is a rarity for any MLS squad but they did lose 1-0 here in August in a game that produced just 5 shots on goal and 6 corners. At San Jose this year that meeting produced just 7 shots on goal and 7 corners so some excellent defense (or poor offense) when these two meet. Really contrasting styles too as SJ get no offense from their strikers, just two goals all year, while Colorado rely almost solely on Cummings/Casey for goals. I expect Colorado to clog up the midfield and SJ to have solid marking on Cummings/Casey. When you look back at the 1-0 Rapids win here in August you'd have to remember how that goal was scored as it was a very rare own goal by the Quakes goalkeeper who dropped a cross which deflected into his own net. Casey did miss that game but SJ were without a number of players themselves. Small bet as this is a gut feel play and with the single elimination format an early goal means the game can get out of hand.
