MLS IS BACK!!!:103631605

NY Red Bulls at Seattle
- This will be Seattle's first match in MLS and the stadium is sold out so huge adrenalin challenge for the Red Bulls to overcome. If you read my preview you'll see this match is the worst team in the league against one of the best, yet Seattle is favored? Clearly bookies are expecting an out-of-body experience from the home team in their inaugural match and it will have to be if they were to defeat the Red Bulls.
Seattle's midfield tonight consists of Le Toux, Alonso, Evans, and Nyassi. Le Toux and Alonso played in USL last year, Evans started for the Crew, and Nyassi is a 145 pound 19-year old. Thus, you have 3 out of 4 guys making their first starts at this level. Up front you have Montero and Jaqua. I think nothing of Jaqua but Montero led Colombian league in scoring so is obviously a threat. The centerback tandem of Hurtado and Marshall is a huge question mark as Marshall was awful with Toronto last year and Hurtado will make his first start in MLS. No reason for Marshall to improve as he's nearing 35 years of age. This is not a good problem to have when facing the league's best player, Juan Pablo Angel, and the league's quickest attack. Seriously they have 3 guys up front that would be just as comfortable running track as they are on a football field
Seattle will be jacked up for this match and new teams have been able to perform really well in this situation. Even the terrible 2005 RSL team won their first home match 1-0 but they beat ended up just 3 spots ahead of them in the standings. The Red Bulls are one of the top teams in MLS and, despite their horrible road performance last year, should take down the expansion Sounders. The last 4 expansion teams won 5, 4, 6, and 8 games and without Ljungberg Seattle is no better than any of those teams. Red Bulls have a full squad except for Khano Smith but his replacement, Mac Kandji, is solid. Unless they just can't handle the enthusiasm that Seattle will surely play with I can't see New York losing this game. Seattle will probably press early which plays right into the Red Bulls' hands with Richards, Kandji, and Angel killing them on counter attacks.

San Jose vs New England
- Two pretty even teams, perhaps NE a bit stronger when healthy, but NE with major problems for Saturday night. It is essential that Joseph, Twellman, and Ralston stay healthy as this team was awful last year when Twellman and Ralston missed several games. Well, not only are Ralston and Twellman out of this match but so is center fullback Badilla, their most important defender, and right-back US International Chris Albright. That means you'll see five sub-25 year olds in MF and attack, a 20-year old rookie at RFB, a 20-year old at LFB, and a 22-year old rookie at CFB. That leaves just Shalrie Joseph, Jay Heaps, and Matt Reis as the only really experienced folks and just 4 players (add in Larentowicz) on the field with more than 1 year of league experience. San Jose are fully healthy so suit up their top 11 including Corrales, Huckerby, and Convey in a very offensive midfield. I have concerns with their striker position but Ryan Johnson and Cam Weaver should give rookie Barnes fits all night with their size and Johnson's speed. San Jose and New England ended the 2008 season going in different directions, SJ up and NE down, and this should continue early into 2009 with the Revs top players injured. SJ ended their preseason with back-to-back shutout wins while New England lost to a USL club and defeated Wake Forest University by just a 2-1 score.

DC United at LA Galaxy
- two really poor defenses with excellent attacks should mean a nice goalfest on Sunday. Despite overhauling their roster LA looks to be pathetic in defense with a few has-beens and never-will-be's surrounding Sean Franklin plus injuries to defenders Todd Dunivant and Leonard Griffin. They did majorly upgrade at keeper, adding Donovan Ricketts, but boast some excellent scorers with Donovan (led MLS in goals 2008), Buddle (scored 15), and a full year with Eddie Lewis on the left side and Klein returned to his natural right mid position. Both keepers in this match are playing with injuries but I expect both to start anyway but if one or both don't play, that's even better. Both these teams gave up over 50 goals last year and the preseason shows no evidence this will change. DC gave up 3 to RSL and 2 to TFC in the Carolina Challenge Cup while the Galaxy gave up 3 to Seattle, 2 to Houston, and 5 to Colorado. LA's central defense will be 37-year old Tony Sanneh with rookie Omar Gonzalez which is a rough way to go into 2009, especially with Emilio and Moreno in DC's attack. DC's 3-5-2 will use Dejan Jakovic in central defense and he's been with the team for just 2 weeks. Assuming Buddle recovers from his injury by tomorrow (listed as questionable) he and Gordon will tear up the DC backline. Would not be surprised to see 5 or 6 goals in this one.
