Trainer Bob Baffert announced Sunday morning that Medina Spirit, winner of the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 1, has tested positive for betamethasone, a corticosteroid, and faces a possible disqualification from the race – the first medication DQ since Dancer's Image lost his Derby victory in 1968 after a disputed positive test for the anti-inflammatory phenylbutazone.

If the drug is confirmed in a split sample it would be Baffert's fifth medication violation since May 2020.

Baffert said his assistant, Jimmy Barnes called Baffert yesterday while he was en route to the the airport in California for a flight to Kentucky to notify him that he had been served by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission after the post-race sample came back positive for 21 picograms of the medication.

Baffert insisted Medina Spirit has never been treated with betamethasone. "I don't know what's going on, but there's something that is not right," Baffert said.

My best friend who owns horses & grew up with a father who was a jockey has a nickname for Bob. He calls him the Silver Hair Weasel. If you follow the game or even more so are connected to the inside of it, his cheating never surprises anyone. You have got to be careful with him especially in big stakes races as he will do favors for racing secretaries and run a somewhat lame or unfit horse to fill a race unknown to the wagering public. Guy is a piece of work.

I almost he rather not have Medina Spirit DQ'd since I won't get the 5 figures I would have won if the 7 caught him down the stretch.

Baffert should've been banned from horse racing years ago but they don't have the balls to do it because he's such a big name in the sport

You notice Kentucky will stand up to him as they take no shit. He was warned before and all of a sudden his horses were ice cold in big stakes races as he had to lay low. Don't be surprised to see a little period of that again especially races in Kentucky. California won't really stand up to him. For example he trains horses for some members for the top agency overseeing CA racing. Do you really think they will turn on him? It is a fucking joke what he has gotten away with/ It is a shame because he is a great trainer but doing shit like this does leave a bad taste in my mouth. The same can be said for others.

2nd article is laughable.

Guys states that those who bet Mandaloun were ripped off when the longer shot Medina Spirit won. For the record Mandaloun was a much bigger price.

It also suggests that the owner of the horse cost the gamblers millions. GTFO. I have owned horses for 24 years. Do you think that is somehow my job to police the trainer? Can you imagine what the trainer would say to me if I tried?

Baffert has an extensive history of positive tests. This falls on him alone.

The Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit’s post-race positive drug test was confirmed, setting the stage for the colt trained by Bob Baffert to be the second horse in the 147-year history of America’s greatest race to be disqualified for a failed drug test.
