Having issues with my Mitsubishi Lancer 2005. Last couple of weeks I have had hard time starting it. It would start on like 2/3rd try though. I imagined either my battery was running on low or my starter is about to go.

However today my car would only not only struggle to start, but it if I left it on park for couple for minute or 2, it would shut off automatically. Also while its on it hums like its struggling and making noises like I'm accelerating (RPM is going up/down), all this while its on park and me not touching the pedal. I'm scared to drive it b/c I'm afraid it will shutdown in middle of road and I will need to pay for towing.

So am screwed in that its not only starter/battery but engine issues? Or is this another symptom starter/battery. Thx!

alternator...that is the sound they make when bearings are going bad...a whine while accelerating..it will leave you stranded when it finally goes...you have about 30 more miles left maybe?i just had alternator put on last week...garage will probably cost you 350 or so...however buy the part yourself and if you can't put it on put an ad on craigslist offering somebody 75 bucks to do it...i got mine done for a total of 175...however your alternator cost more than mine did...

don't forget to send them back the core to get your 35 bucks back

and if you can make it to an auto zone or advance auto they will diagnose for free to make sure it is alternator
