LOWE's CELEBRATION OFFENDS PLAYERS

AP-

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Some of the Oakland Athletics were furious with Derek Lowe, accusing the Red Sox pitcher of making obscene gestures toward them after he struck out Terrence Long to finish Boston's 4-3 victory in the AL division series Monday night.

"It's a situation where if you did anything where you offended anyone, I'm sorry," Lowe said. "I was swinging my arms around. I don't know what I did. I did the same crazy thing I do every game."

The A's thought Lowe simulated a sexual act with his arms and made a gesture toward his crotch following the final out, sending Oakland shortstop Miguel Tejada into a rage in the clubhouse moments later.

"Derek Lowe is going to be paid back for that sign," Tejada screamed hysterically through the clubhouse, shouting expletives. "My kid is in the stands. He's going to pay."

Oakland general manager Billy Beane escorted the crying Tejada away.

Tejada was later told that Lowe apologized.

"I feel better now that I hear he apologizes," Tejada said after calming down. "He was jumping around and making a scene. They have families up there, we have families up there."

Tejada is one of the most emotional players on the A's, and this was probably his final game with them because he can become a free agent.

"He takes everything personally, wins and losses, and plays with his heart on his sleeve," first baseman Scott Hatteberg said of Tejada. "He plays with everything he's got."

Other A's players were offended.

"That's extremely unprofessional," center fielder Chris Singleton said. "That's a shame that's the type of person he is. He was the only one who showed less than professionalism."

Hatteberg spent seven seasons with the Red Sox and 11 in their organization. He and Lowe were teammates.

"To have that done is absolutely classless and unprofessional," Hatteberg said. "I'm disappointed having known him. I don't think it was aimed at (Tejada), it was aimed at us. I know we show emotion, but I can't think of anything we've done to show them up."

just because ramirez, sosa, bonds, eckersley all do it doesn't mean it aint classless. i don't care if every single player does it (like the nba) it still is complete nonsense.

i don't have a problem with lowe's celebration...he just won the game. now, if he stood there on the mound and starred down terence long and started pointing everywhere, i'd have a prblem with that. and, if manny hit the homer and ran to first pumping his fist (ala kirk gibson) i wouldn't have a problem with that.

its not getting excited and showing emotion that pisses everyone off...its showing up your opponent by staring down a homerun or walking to first base or pointing.

I hope the Blue Jays sign Tejada.

Even though he sucked in the post season,

What a bunch of whiners coming out of the Bay Area. First the Giants are all whining about playing time and other unrelated crap, now you get the A's not talking about gettting beat, but the celebrations of the opponents. How ridiculous.

As for Tejada, we all know he will be signed by the Yankees, they need a utility infielder

Gagne 38: Please spare us from comparing Manny Ramierez to Bonds. Ramirez is a classless, overpaid punk along with the crotch grabber Derek Lowe.

This team will never win a championship until they get rid of all of these punks and get some legitimate ballplayers who go on the field and play the game the way it is meant to be played.

That homer was HUGE, let the guy admire it. He deserved that right. Pointing to his OWN dugout.....oh how terrible. PLLEEEEEEZZZZZZ, stop with the whining A's fans. Your embarrassing yourselves!!

USC, You have no clue. The red sox celebrated when they won the series. I was at game 2 and when Tejada caught the final out of that game he acted like they won the worl series and then he is the first one crying about the Sox celebration. Have you ever played in a deciding game of the playoffs?? You have no idea what the emotions are like so don't judge Manny. And stop crying because your A's can't win a clinching game in the playoffs.

fish-head, i am not an a's fan. actually i was rooting for the sox in the series. that being said, what ramirez did was show up his opponent. if you say he didn't, then where does it end. what if he hits a homerun, stands at the plate and takes his unit out of his pants and wiggles it at the pitcher...is that ok? would that be "showing emotion" or "celebrating appropriately"? come on!

Blue- Be rational please. He hit maybe the biggest homer of his career....and WALKS slowly for a few steps and that is showing up the opponent? Gonna have to agree to disagree with you in this instance.

Manny is very refreshing for the game of baseball. Good guy.

good guy? didn't he miss three games earlier this year with a sore throat. didn't he refuse to pinch hit in one of those games with the game on the line and the sox fighting for the wild card? then, later that night (or maybe it was the night before - i can't remember) he's seen in a hotel bar drinking with one of the yankee players?

good guy? please.

you say he hit the biggest homerun of his career...i agree. know what you're supposed to do when you hit the biggest homerun of your career - run your ass around the bases then celebrate with your teammates in the dugout. you wanna yell and scream and pump your fist while running around the bases...no problem. you wanna stand and watch it, slowly walk towards first then start pointing...then get the hell off my tv screen you classless punk.

just my opinion.

manny is the man - lowe is the man. they both got it done - period. end of story. times change and players now just act different then they used to. football, basketball - every sport. manny aint the first and he wont be the last so just shut the **** up about it. either that or go build a time machine, grab an elvis album and set that bitch for 1960.

the A's are just crying over spilled milk. put in a pacifier, change your diaper and crawl into the crib with your kids tejada - waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

baseball is supposed to be different. i've come to expect retarded acts of individualism in the nba and the nfl but, baseball players are supposed to respect the game and its traditions (and unwritten rules). now that bonds and sosa are thumping their own chests on sportscenter every night, i suppose i'll have to watch 95% of the players do that in ten years when the kids who are studs right now are playing in the bigs.

then i'm sure espn will have baseball's version of "jacked-up" (that part of nfl primetime where they showcase big hits by defensive backs who, by the way, want to make the highlights 10 times more than they want to wrap-up a tackle). maybe they'll call it "showed-up"...they'll showcase the top 10 classless acts of individualism and disrespect for your opponent on the baseball field.

i can't wait.

took the gloves off 30 years ago when Jim Bouton's book "Ball Four" was released, allagations of wife swapping etc. Remember Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson fighting in the dugout.Players like Steve Howe, Wade Boggs, and a host of other characters have given the game a darker, more anything goes image. Last night was really nothing new or even that bad. Don't be suprized to see worse stuff before these very playoffs are over.

Have any of you guys seen the original Major League movie??? Remember when Soriano (sp?) hit that home run and did his little dance going to first base while looking at his own dugout?? Well what Ramirez did last night reminded me of that scene. I dont see what all the fuss being made about this is all about.

Those 2 tough A$$ clowns in the stands should have been allowed on the field so we all could see just how tough they were. I thought it was great the way the one cop just manhandled the one punk, unfortuentley that little dweeb will probably file a lawsuit claiming police brutality.

Didnt see what Derek Lowe did after the game because I was celebrating myself, so I cant comment on that. What I find interesting is that The A'S players had more to say about what Lowe did than what Ramirez did.

The only thing Manny did wrong was not turn to the A's dugout and give the choke sign. These A's whining about him and Lowe are nothing but little girls who are upset they blew yet another series. Tejada's my favorite. This is the guy who drops about 20 f bombs following Pedro striking him out and then complains about Lowe doing something I've seen Favre and others do countless times. Tejada = choker. Chavez = choker. Red Sox = moving on.
