Why isn't Ben going after Chelsea?

Kerry gals feeling Afflecktionate
By Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa
Thursday, July 29, 2004John Kerry's darling daughters, Vanessa and Alexandra - the subjects of fawning press coverage all week - have been acting like a couple of Girls Gone Wild behind the scenes, jousting for Ben Affleck's attention and acting like spoiled divas at The Federalist!

``It wasn't flattering to either one of them,'' said our spy at the DNC, who observed the Kerry gals falling all over Affleck the other night.

And a miffed minion at the GQ party at The Federalist was also unimpressed.

``If Kerry runs the country like his daughters tried to run the party, demanding this, demanding that, we're in for it,'' he said.

But let us begin at the beginning: Our behind-the-scenes spies at the FleetCenter say the first sign of a Ben rivalry came in a skybox on the convention's opening night.

``Ben and Vanessa were in the front of the box in the external seating,'' said our sisters' snitch. ``He had his mom with him but he and Vanessa were yukking it up. They were laughing and having a good time. Very cozy. They looked like affectionate pals.

``Within 15 minutes, Alexandra waltzes in, she sees them and lunges across the partition to get in between them. She greets Ben with the big hug and kiss. This was clearly making Vanessa very uncomfortable, she would walk away and come back. It was like two junior high school girls vying for his attention. This was clearly a case of sibling rivalry.''

Order was restored when a woman, believed to be Ben's assistant Chay Carter, arrived on the scene, which prompted the Kerry gals to back off.

But the sisters were back in action Tuesday night at the GQ party where, we hear, they arrived with a posse of 30 in tow and demanded they all be let into the already-overcrowded bash.

The pile-up of Kerry hangers-on backed up the line of revelers trying to get into the soiree, and at one point, the fire marshal arrived to restore order!

Inside, Vanessa was oblivious to the fuming horde cooling their heels outdoors as she glommed onto Ben again, greeting him with a huge hug and kiss.

Yesterday, the first-daughter wannabes were again with The Object Of Their Afflecktion at a brunch at UpStairs on the Square where Ben and Alexandra were caught on camera looking raaather cozy!

``She was clearly tickled pink he was talking to her that closely,'' said Someone Who Was There.

Also on the scene, BTW, were former second daughters Karenna Gore Schiff and Kristen Gore; S.D.-in-waiting Cate Edwards; Andre 3000 of Outkast; the Kerry gals' stepbro, Andre Heinz; and actor Donovan Leitch.

Of course, some might suggest the gals can't be blamed for falling all over Affleck, since he has, sort of, led them on.

In the new issue of Harper's Bazaar, Ben blathers that he finds the sisters ``funny,'' ``smart'' and ``absurdly beautiful.''

Affleck, who interviews the duo for the maggie, admires Alexandra's ``soft features, brown hair and a gentle, willowy carriage that complements her demeanor.''

As for Vanessa, he raves: ``She looks, with her flaxen hair, almost like a Nordic milkman's child.''

Gag us.

Kerry campaign spokesgal Jen Psaki shrugged off the reports with a couple of classic nondenial denials.

``Through this experience they've had the opportunity to meet a lot of different people and they both appreciate and enjoy the company of Ben Affleck as does their family,'' she said. ``And there's not much more than that to say about that.''

As for the GQ hoedown, Psaki said the gals were there with pals and had a nice time.

``They did go to the party and they do have a lot of friends in town,'' she said. ``They are trying to balance their active roles in the campaign . . . with spending time with friends and doing things normal people do.''

File Under: Sister Act.
