Los Angeles (2-2-9) at San Jose (2-8-3)
Saturday, 4:30 pm Eastern – ESPN 2
Two teams badly in need of a victory meet on Saturday in the California Clasico as the San Jose Earthquakes host the Los Angeles Galaxy in an ESPN 2 televised match. The Earthquakes have just one win in their last 12 games while the Galaxy seems to play a draw every match. It is the second meeting between the two teams at San Jose this season as they played to a 1-1 draw back in April.
San Jose is a -135 favorite with a total of 2.5 under at SBG Global.
San Jose is coming off a 2-1 loss last weekend to Seattle. The Earthquakes have just nine points in 12 games this season to sit in last place in the Western Conference. The Earthquakes have made some changes, adding Antonio Ribeiro and getting Darren Huckerby back from injury. "It is a little bit difficult to figure out. You go into the preseason hoping guys you signed will come in and play well. You get some bad results and you try to figure out what are we going to do to change it," head coach Frank Yallop said. "We have to make sure we bring in guys who are solid players. It is not easy when you change the team and I think we didn't play so bad at times." San Jose definitely needs Huckerby in the lineup. "When Huckerby is on the field he is dangerous. For us to be a good team he needs to be on the field for us and tonight I think we played better.” Yallop said, “We got him the ball more in the second half and we seemed to be more active in the middle of the field. Our general football was better in the second half."
Los Angeles will be without forward Landon Donovan on Saturday as he is playing on the United States team in the Soccer Betting Confederations Cup. The Galaxy are coming off a 2-0 loss to Real Salt Lake last Saturday. Los Angeles has 15 points from 13 matches and they are tied for fifth place in the Western Conference. The game against Real Salt Lake was the second they have played without Donovan. "I have a hard time believing the reason for tonight's performance was lack of leadership," head coach Bruce Arena said. "We played last Saturday (and won without Donovan) in Toronto, and certainly nobody was questioning our leadership then. ... I just think, in all fairness, the better team won."
Five of the Galaxy's next seven games are away from home. In the all-time series against San Jose the Galaxy have 23 wins while San Jose has 13. The teams have played to a total of six draws. At San Jose, the teams have split 22 meetings with each team winning nine with four draws.
