Quick...name one African American GOP member of Congress. How about an African-American Republican governor? No? Nothing? The problem for the GOP isn't a lack of minorities in leadership, it's a lack of minority participation. Jindal or Steele aren't nearly enough. The problem is systemic. Republicans are opposed to government (yet there never seems to be a lack of them running for office) and government, in the U.S. at least, is by the people. Little wonder, then, that most of us take out votes elsewhere.
The GOP has reaped what it has sown. I mean, it's in the adjective used to describe them, for God's sake: CONSERVATIVE. What, exactly, are they trying to CONSERVE? The same ol', same ol' which includes the racial order of the past 500 years. They are dogmatically opposed to any government intervention in establishing racial (or gender) equality. Of course minorities (and us thinking white folk who stop thinking about making money long enough to pick up a book or visit some place besides our own neighborhood) are opposed to the GOP. And, thankfully, as the Republican party ever more becomes a regional party of Southern bigots, it will finally shrivel and die. The thing to worry about, though, is what will replace it...
