Villa's Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen parried El Hadji Diouf's volley from the right and Kewell had only to turn the rebound into the net.
But the Australian striker misdirected the ball just wide with his weaker right foot.
After a spirited performance by Villa in the second half of a game that was initially dominated by Liverpool, Gerard Houllier will be happy to have come away with a point.
Villa were unlucky when Colombian forward Juan Pablo Angel's curling free kick on the hour came back off the post.
Both sides lost their opening matches last weekend, Liverpool at home to Chelsea and Villa away at promoted Portsmouth.
Champions Manchester United, 2-1 winners at Newcastle United on Saturday, and Chelsea, who beat Leicester City at home by the same score, are the only teams on a maximum six points from two games.
